Former Second Mile board members: We needed to know
Updated: 12/19/2011 06:54:09 AM EST, MICHAEL RUBINKAM, BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE and MARK SCOLFORO of The Associated Press wrote:STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Former board members of Jerry Sandusky's charity say its CEO never told them about a 2002 shower incident that is the focus of child sexual abuse charges against the retired Penn State assistant coach. If they knew Sandusky had been banned from bringing kids on campus, they say they could have taken steps to better protect children a decade ago.

"Not one thing was said to us," said Bradley P. Lunsford, a Centre County judge who served on the Second Mile board between 2001 and 2005. "Not a damn thing."

If more information had been given to board members, they "would have asked the follow-up question: Why? You don't know? Who knows? Who can we talk to? Has this been reported to the police?" Lunsford said. "I guarantee you there would have been a competition among all those people to be the first to ask the question, 'Why is he not allowed on campus?'"

Lunsford and four other former board members at The Second Mile point the finger at Jack Raykovitz, a close friend of Sandusky's who ran the charity until resigning following the former coach's Nov. 5 arrest.

A former prosecutor, Lunsford said Raykovitz had an obligation to tell the board. "There are a number of people around that table who have been involved with children's charities for years and there's a very good chance that if given accurate information about what the allegation was, there's a lot of people around that table who could have done something about it."

One of Raykovitz's vice presidents said Raykovitz also shared little information with his managers about a 2008 sexual abuse complaint that led to the current criminal charges against Sandusky.

And the head of Clinton County's child welfare agency, where the 2008 investigation began, said he told Raykovitz's wife in November 2008 that Sandusky had been spoken to about getting "too close" to children involved with the charity. Gerald Rosamilia said Raykovitz's wife, Katherine Genovese, who helped run The Second Mile, did not define what was meant by "too close" or give a timeframe.

Raykovitz defended himself in a telephone interview, saying he acted appropriately at all times. "There have always been steps in place to protect kids," he said.

The grand jury that charged Sandusky with 52 sexual abuse-related counts involving 10 boys said the former coach "found his victims" through The Second Mile and committed many of his offenses inside Penn State football buildings.

The nonprofit had thrived since its creation in 1977 because of Sandusky's prominence as a defensive coach at Penn State, its close ties to university donors and leaders, and its use of Penn State's athletic fields for its camps serving at-risk children. Then-coach Joe Paterno often served as master of ceremonies at The Second Mile fundraisers.

Paterno, 84, led Penn State football for more than 45 years until early November, when the sexual abuse charges against Sandusky shook the entire university and claimed the jobs of major college football's winningest coach and the school's president, Graham Spanier.

Now, with The Second Mile's future in doubt, it is unclear whether Raykovitz properly handled the charity's response to the 2002 case.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley testified that a graduate assistant had told him in 2002 only that he had seen "inappropriate conduct" that made him feel uncomfortable, and nothing of a sexual nature. But Mike McQueary, now an assistant coach, testified to the grand jury that he told Curley he saw what he believed to be Sandusky raping the boy, who he said was about 10.

Curley, who has been charged with perjury and failure to report a sex crime, testified he told Raykovitz of inappropriate conduct and that Sandusky was prohibited from bringing youth onto the Penn State campus.

Asked what Curley told him, Raykovitz cited a Nov. 6 Second Mile statement that referred only to inappropriate conduct: "At no time was The Second Mile made aware of the very serious allegations contained in the Grand Jury report."

The statement also said Curley, who has been placed on leave, told Raykovitz the shower incident "had been internally reviewed and that there was no finding of wrongdoing."

But Lunsford said the charity's board couldn't take action in 2002 that might have prevented other assaults of children "if there's a cover-up from the source."

Even if Raykovitz had only limited information, he still should have acted more aggressively in 2002 when contacted by Curley and should have viewed Curley's ban on Sandusky bringing Second Mile kids to campus as "a red flag," Lunsford said.

As the person in charge, Raykovitz was legally required to provide the board all available information whether he believed it was true or suspected it was false, Lunsford said.

"We still need to know. That's our job," he added. "By not telling us, it essentially rendered us ineffective and we had no chance to help those children."

Informed of Lunsford's comments, Raykovitz said, "He can feel anything he wants to feel."

Charles Markham, retired president of Uni-Marts Inc. and a Second Mile board member from the late 1990s until about 2004, said that Raykovitz never discussed the 2002 case with him personally or at board meetings. "If I'd known anything in 2002, I would have had a hard time keeping it under my hat," Markham said.

Two other former board members - Larry Snavely, who runs a State College-based higher education marketing firm, and Donald Cross, a retired Centre County school employee - said Raykovitz never mentioned the 2002 allegation. Another former member said he was not told, but asked that he not be publicly identified.

David Woodle, acting CEO, refused to address concerns raised by board members about Raykovitz's handling of information regarding the 2002 shower incident, saying to do so would be a distraction from the goal of helping serve children.

The board of directors of a children's charity is responsible for making sure that it operates under reasonable policies and procedures to protect children, according to Daniel Borochoff, president of Chicago-based Charity Watch. Individual board members can face lawsuits for failing in their oversight duties, and The Second Mile insures its board members against such claims.

The Second Mile has been named in two civil complaints, including one that seeks to preserve the charity's assets.

David Marshall, a Washington, D.C., lawyer who represents other accusers, said: "It may have been only Sandusky who laid his hands on these children, but it is clear that a number of other individuals and agencies placed the children in harm's way by knowingly taking actions that allowed the abuse to continue even after they became fully aware of it."

Raykovitz also is facing questions about his handling of the 2008 complaint.

Rosamilia, the Clinton County youth services chief, said he had informed Raykovitz's wife in November 2008 that his office was terminating its relationship with The Second Mile because of an abuse complaint. He said he had not identified the target of that complaint, but that Genovese eventually guessed correctly that it was Sandusky.

Rosamilia, who said he mentioned his conversation with Genovese to investigators working on the current prosecution, also recalled Genovese saying that a member of The Second Mile board planned to speak with Sandusky about staying away from Second Mile events involving children.

Raykovitz said Rosamilia's description of the conversation with his wife is incorrect. He would not elaborate. Attempts to reach Genovese were unsuccessful.

Raykovitz referred questions about what he did in 2008 to a prior statement, which said that when Sandusky told The Second Mile he was being investigated because of allegations made "by an adolescent male," the organization separated him from "all of our program activities involving children." The Second Mile statement makes no mention of the sexual nature of the 2008 complaint.

He said in the interview last week some staff at The Second Mile were informed in 2008 that the complaint was the reason Sandusky was not participating in programs serving children, but only on an "as-needed basis."

Bonnie Marshall, the charity's vice president for development, said Raykovitz described the 2008 complaint to her and other senior staff as a general abuse complaint, not one of a sexual nature.

She said Raykovitz explained that Sandusky would be taking a break from programs with children but would continue fundraising.

She said she also was unaware of Genovese's conversation with Rosamilia, and was not aware that anyone at the charity had ever spoken to Sandusky about getting too close to The Second Mile children.

In 2009, when Sandusky left the charity's board, Raykovitz told the staff that child welfare officials had issued a finding of abuse against Sandusky, Marshall said. But, she added, Raykovitz described it only as a general complaint being pursued by an angry mother who had accused Sandusky of wrongdoing, not a complaint of sexual abuse.

"I thought he would have told me that this was something really bad," Marshall said. "And he didn't."

Several weeks ago I had suspected Paterno would say something like this…
...Paterno, though, was also asked why he had not reported McQueary’s accusations to his superiors more quickly. Paterno seemed to suggest that he waited a day because it was a Saturday.

I didn’t want to interfere with their weekend,” Paterno testified.

NJ educator videotaped boys in shower
SOMERVILLE, N.J. - An educator using a secretly installed camera videotaped teenage boys in the shower at a Catholic high school for nearly three years, authorities said.

Patrick J. Lott, who was arrested last week, was arraigned Wednesday on charges he videotaped students in a communal shower area at Immaculata High School in Somerville starting in January 2008. He did not enter a plea.

The prosecutor's office said that there were at least 22 victims and that nine boys identified in the videos are currently under the age of 16. To protect the boys' identities, they were referred to only by their initials in court filings.

Lott, 54, is an assistant principal at a public middle school who volunteered at the Catholic high school. Authorities declined to provide further details about his volunteer position.

Immaculata officials alerted prosecutors when they received allegations of inappropriate conduct by Lott and later removed him from any involvement at the school, diocesan officials said.

Videos of boys showering together were recovered as a result of searches of Lott's home on Dec. 13 and 16, Somerset County prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said. Detectives later located an area at the school where a camera had been installed surreptitiously, his office said.

Lott said little during his court appearance. His attorney, James Wronko, did not attend the hearing and did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

Lott is a longtime area educator who was active in local and county politics, and he served as chairman of the Somerville Republican Committee.

Bail for Lott was set at $500,000, with the condition he have no contact with any child under the age of 16, any of the boys in the videos or any member of the staff or faculty at Immaculata.

Lott was charged with 22 counts of invasion of privacy, one for each victim, and more than two dozen counts of various degrees of endangering the welfare of a child, prosecutor's office spokesman Jack Bennett said.

BOB HOPE held a fundraiser for the Second Mile in 1983.

PR Newswire
June 26, 1986, Thursday
LENGTH: 491 words
DATELINE: PITTSBURGH, June 26

PITTSBURGH, June 26 /PRN/ -- Mr. Funny Man himself, Bob
Hope will take to the stage at the Penn State Century of Excellence
Galas at Hershey (Pa.), Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on three
consecutive dates in July, it was announced today.

The gala celebrations will heighten enthusiasm as former players,
alumni and friends gather to honor Penn State Football in this, its
100th season.

Hope, a long-time fan of Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions, brings an
added excitement to the already momentous occasions, a spokesman
said.

''What better man than Bob Hope to provide the entertainment for
an occasion filled with memories such as this, the 100-year
anniversary of Penn State football,'' said Penn State head coach
Paterno. ''Hope's energy is amazing, and his kind of humor is hard
to touch. I've always been a great admirer of his.''

Hope's addictive humor is unlike any others. His sharp perceptive
wit has kept audiences laughing all over the globe, a spokesman said.

Born Lester Townes Hope in London, Hope's family moved to the
United States shortly after his birth. When Hope got into show
business he changed his name to Bob because as he puts it, ''They
named me Lester Townes Hope, and at the time I didn't care much one
way or the other. But when I grew up I began to care, and it wasn't
one way -- it was the other. So I changed it.''

Hope's career began as a child and moved rapidly into vaudeville,
Broadway and then Hollywood. Hope did 58 films for Paramount,
including seven ''Road Pictures'' with Bing Crosby and Dorothy
Lamour. His broadcasting career started with NBC in the 1930s on
Rudy Vallee's Thursday night show, and carried over to TV in 1950.
His first television show was done from the roof of the New
Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street.

An ambassador of good will, Hope's USO shows have brought smiles
to the faces of many young men and women in the face of war, a
spokesman said.

A total charity effort, the Desert Classic is considered one of
Hope's greatest achievements. The event has raised more than $7
million for the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Desert and many
other desert charities.

In 1983 Hope performed at Penn State's Recreation Hall. All the
proceeds from the event went to the Second Mile, a nonprofit
corporation for operation of a home for troubled youths, started by
Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

The Century of Excellence Galas will be held on Thursday, July 24,
at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center; Friday, July 25, at the
Pittsburgh Hyatt; and Saturday, July 26, at Philadelphia's Wyndham
Franklin Plaza.

Furor in Greece over pedophilia as a disability
The Associated Press

ATHENS, Greece - Greek disabled groups are angry at a government decision to expand a list of state-recognized disability categories to include pedophiles, exhibitionists and kleptomaniacs.

The National Confederation of Disabled People called the action "incomprehensible," and said pedophiles are now awarded a higher government disability pay than some people who have received organ transplants.

But the Labor Ministry on Monday said categories added to the expanded list , that also includes pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, fetishists and sadomasochists , were included for purposes of medical assessment and used as a gauge for allocating financial assistance.

The press in a functioning democracy would at least ask the question--is there a connection between Sandusky and Santorum?

The question is notable for it's absence.

Didn't some guy claim Santorum actually won the Iowa caucuses? I've barely paid attention to any election shenanigans so I don't know the details of the story or how it's played out in the media, but if Santorum can convince people that someone is trying to steal the nomination from him/play dirty tricks on him he becomes the underdog, fighting against the odds against unscrupulous opponents. More mugging for the cameras and a 'scrappy' narrative to go along with the images. Everything is coming up roses for Ricky as long as the press keeps quiet about Sandusky. And why shouldn't they? If they ever felt inclined to ask perfectly legitimate questions of Santorum's possible links to Sandusky WM took care of that by pre-poisoning the well as a 'conspiracy theory'. They have their orders. Once it's been to the dump don't touch it. Unless it skewers someone who can be painted as a socialist.

Bottom line, is an elite pedophile ring running a pedo puppet for president?

Penn State president's denial of knowledge of Sandusky reports is flimsy, PR expert says
— SARA GANIM AND ELIZABETH GIBSON | The Patriot-News
— Updated: Wednesday, January 11, 2012, 5:54 PM

Penn State's president, head football coach, athletic director and vice president for finance had all testified before a grand jury. The university's in-house counsel was answering subpoenas, compiling thousands of pages of documents and forwarding 10 years of emails.

A 100-page police report sitting in the campus police department was a central part of an investigation.

An assistant football coach testified he saw a graphic sexual attack in the football building.

Almost all of that was made public through reporting by The Patriot-News, beginning in March, that was picked up by The Associated Press, talked about on ESPN and appeared in several national news outlets, including the Centre Daily Times in State College, home to PSU's main campus.

Even with all of that, President Rodney Erickson— who has taken the reins of Penn State since allegations of sex abuse against former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky engulfed the university —says he didn't know anything about the allegations until he read the grand jury report in November.

Public relations expert David Fuscus, CEO of Washington, D.C.-based Xenophon Strategies Inc., isn't buying it.

And he isn't buying Erickson shutting down journalists who gathered Saturday for Penn State's announcement on its first head football coaching change in 46 years
    .

Erickson, before taking over as president, was the man who made sure Penn State academics were running smoothly day to day. He was the No. 2. He was at the helm when former President Graham Spanier was out schmoozing donors, talking to alumni, sitting on committee panels and being the face of the university.

Erickson has promised transparency and a full investigation since Spanier and former football coach Joe Paterno were ousted. But he's sputtered in recovery mode.

At Saturday's news conference, Erickson attempted, but failed, to dodge reporters' questions about what he knew. His answers were anything but clear.

Who knew what and when has been a central theme to this saga, and Erickson is no exception. The questions began as soon as Penn State announced it was dropping "interim" from his title
    .

On Saturday, a reporter asked him, "It seemed you were caught off-guard by something when there was months and months of warning."

"There were, I would think nearly all individuals at the university, including me, were not aware of any this until we read it in the grand jury presentment, so how would we have known?" Erickson replied.

Another question: "How is that possible when it was widely reported in March?" Erickson turned his head, didn't answer and took a different question on a different topic.

Despite a university spokesman saying that question would be the last, reporters managed to get one more in: "The Patriot-News had a story in March. So how is it possible?" "I don't know. I can't go back and … all I knew was there was something that had gone on in Clinton County," Erickson said.

"Did you read the story in March in The Patriot-News?" "No, I didn't," Erickson said. That was it. No more questions.

Fuscus called Erickson's performance a failure.

"There has to be an expectation that anything and everything will be brought up [at news conferences.]
They've got to talk to the press even if its uncomfortable for them to do so," Fuscus said.

The Patriot-News reported in March that Penn State officials, including Paterno, testified before the grand jury.

The story also went into detail about a six-week Penn State police investigation in 1998 after two boys accused Sandusky of touching them during a shower in the Penn State football locker room.

Paterno and Spanier were subsequently asked about their knowledge in the spring by several media outlets, and their answers were widely published. There were follow-up stories about grand jury testimony, about several more victims being interviewed and about the investigation wrapping up in August. And all of them were printed in The Patriot-News and several other places, including The Daily Collegian— the Penn State student newspaper —and The Centre Daily Times.

"I would be dumbfounded if [Erickson] wasn't reading Patriot-News stories. You are in the state's capital. The governor of your state reads your paper every single day. Saying you hadn't read the story is pretty flimsy," Fuscus said.

Fuscus, a former staffer with Pennsylvania political leaders— he was press secretary to former U.S. Rep. Bill Clinger, R-State College —said Erickson's fumble could be due to nerves.

But that excuse won't hold up, he said
    .

"This is a huge national and international story. Everything that Penn State does now, especially naming a new coach, is connected to this large story. They can't expect to go into a press conference without that coming up and without [Erickson] being prepared to deal with it," Fuscus said.

"It'd be nice if you could put reporters in a little box and say, 'We'll just talk about this,' but that's not possible," Fuscus said.

"Penn State has no choice in this matter. They need to be open, honest, thorough in every interaction they have with the press because it's … interaction they have with the public. Not just Pennsylvania, Centre County, [but] all over the country, all over the world," he said.
