...I live in the Bay Area and heard the Horowitz stuff on the news, but because I try really hard not to get caught up in 'true crime' stuff I mistook the Polk case for that other woman who stabbed her businessman boyfriend. I didn't realize this was a case that had ritual abuse elements. I'll have to ask my friend who was raised in a cult her take on it.

When I first heard about it it made me think about the murder of Judge Lefkow's family in Chicago.

Re: I'd also been doing my best to ignore it

But a headline like "Lawyers, murder, hit men & the Devil" was too eyecatching to ignore.

(I haven't yet figured out just what Sploid is, but they do have some interesting stories.)

Yes, kind of reminiscent of the old joke...

Postby banned » Tue Oct 18, 2005 4:04 am

...that a bestselling book should be titled "Lincoln's Doctor's Dog."

It has it all!

Well, almost. If it was "Lawyers, murder, hit men, the Devil & BOOBIES" it would.

Tonight on the news they said Horowitz had gotten a restraining order on his neighbor whom he said was behaving peculiarly and might become dangerous. But apparently they never served the order on the guy. Still, he must have been weird for them to take it out in the first place.

Maybe Horowitz had her whacked. I'm always really suspicious when someone says "Oh everybody loved [the dearly departed.] S/he had no enemies."

Nobody is loved by everyone. And more people are killed by their relatives and friends than by enemies. Enemies do things like get you fired or sue you for everything you've got. When you think about it, killing someone really isn't the nastiest thing you can do to them by far. If there's no afterlife, they're just out of the picture; if there is, either they're in heaven with God, or they're where they were headed anyway.

I also found something kind of suspicious. They quote Horowitz, who is supposed to be this high octane lawyer, as saying "I hope they catch whoever did this." Now, if someone killed my soul mate what I would say is "I am going to make damn sure whoever did this is caught and fried." You might say "I hope they don't cancel 'Scrubs'", or "I hope they don't discontinue the two for one special at Applebees."

My gut said "Ah, had her whacked, did you? And think you did such a good job 'they' will never figure it out?"

Top lawyer discovers wife stabbed to death at dream home
From Chris Ayres in Los Angeles

THE wife of a prominent California lawyer who has defended drug dealers, killers and other serious criminals was murdered at the weekend in a case that has sent a shiver through the American legal profession.

Daniel Horowitz, 50, found the body of his wife, Pamela Vitale, at the entrance of their home on Saturday.

The couple were living in a mobile trailer while they were building their “dream estate” near San Francisco, according to authorities.

A post-mortem examination was being performed yesterday in an attempt to find out how Mrs Vitale died.

Mr Horowitz is currently defending Susan Polk, who is accused of murdering her therapist husband in 2002. Felix Polk was found stabbed to death in the pool house of the couple’s home in Orinda, California. She says that she killed him in self-defence.

Mr Horowitz became well known in the US as a defence pundit on television channels including CNN, MSNBC and Fox News, during the murder trial of Scott Peterson, a Californian fertiliser salesman who was found guilty of killing his pregnant wife.

He also defended Pavlo Lazarenko, the former Ukrainian Prime Minister, in a recent money-laundering and fraud trial. In May a judge threw out half of the convictions against Mr Lazarenko, who is still under house arrest at an undisclosed location in the San Francisco area.

Other clients of Mr Horowitz have included Steve Williams, the man who caught the baseball hit by the sports star Barry Bonds on his 700th home run, in a lawsuit to determine who could keep the ball. A judge allowed Mr Williams to auction the ball.

Friends of Mr Horowitz said that he was mindful of his safety and carried a gun. There was a surveillance camera at his trailer, but the property was too isolated to fully monitor.

“This is a real tragedy. These are good people,” said Ivan Golde, a friend of Mr Horowitz and co-counsel in the Susan Polk case. He added that his colleague was always aware that he was a target, even if he didn’t know about specific threats.

“It’s only normal to have in the back of your mind, especially when you’re dealing with true-calibre criminals,” said Mr Golde. “With a lot of these people, that’s the way they are, they threaten people.”

After the murder, a police officer was stationed at the bottom of Mr Horowitz’s driveway. Trees blocked views of the property, which is about 20 miles east of San Francisco.

Mr Horowitz first called the police on Saturday night to report that his wife was dead, said a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. The lawyer returned to his property briefly on Sunday.

Another friend of Mr Horowitz’s, Robert Massi, told the NBC Today programme that the lawyer had an alibi for most of Saturday. “He was with me for a couple of hours and met with his defence team about 11am on the Susan Polk case,” Mr Massi said.

“In the afternoon he dropped paperwork off at the hotel where I was staying. Everything was fine. It’s just devastating to think that nine hours later the man finds his wife like this.”

Mr Horowitz married Mrs Vitale about ten years ago. Both had been previously married. Mrs Vitale, 52, a former high-tech marketing executive, worked at her husband’s law practice, managing databases. She sat in the front row of the courtroom last week during her husband’s opening statement.

“She was down to earth and believed in what Dan was doing,” Mr Golde said.

www.timesonline.co.uk/art...96,00.html

Sacramento Union October 18, 2005

Only Questions in Murder of Attorney's Wife

...the sprawling hillside compound where the wife of prominent criminal defense lawyer Daniel Horowitz was beaten to death over the weekend was remote and difficult to reach, but anyone determined to get inside would have had an easy time making it past a wrought-iron gate guarding the driveway.

There were so many people on the Lafayette property - building contractors, neighbors and others - that a note explained how to open the gate and proceed up the steep driveway. And the surrounding terrain was so wild that a person could easily enter on foot undetected.

“You could just walk right around the side of the gate, there are countless ways to get in here,” said Joseph Lynch who sold Horowitz and his wife, Pamela Vitale, an adjoining four-acre lot where he had a deal to live for 10 more years in a camper. “There are too many ways to come in undercover, without being in a vehicle or going on the road.”

Horowitz’s co-counsel and longtime friend Ivan Golde said Monday that police were closer to solving the case, but authorities warned it was premature to make such remarks and said no suspect was in custody.

“There is a potential suspect, but it’s not a former client,” Golde said outside a Martinez courtroom where he and Horowitz were defending Susan Polk in a high-profile murder case until a mistrial was declared over Vitale’s slaying.

An autopsy Monday revealed that Vitale was beaten to death, Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Golde said Sunday that Horowitz was worried about his own safety and was armed with a gun and other weapons because of his line of work defending drug dealers, killers and other serious criminals. Golde said he was worried about his own safety as well, and that police had warned him to be careful. not sure which of these 'suspects', if either, is the patsy, but the murder details are exceedingly gruesome as revealed above.
