Wife: 'Kony 2012' director suffers from psychosis

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The director of a wildly popular video about brutal African warlord Joseph Kony has been diagnosed with a mental condition triggered by trauma or stress and is expected to stay in the hospital for weeks, his wife said Wednesday.

Jason Russell, 33, was hospitalized last week in San Diego after witnesses saw him running through streets in his underwear, screaming incoherently and banging his fists on the pavement.

His outburst came after the video's sudden success on the Internet brought heightened scrutiny to Invisible Children, the group he co-founded in 2005 to fight African war atrocities.

Russell's family reiterated that the filmmaker's bizarre behavior was not due to drugs or alcohol. He was given a preliminary diagnosis of brief reactive psychosis, in which a person displays sudden psychotic behavior.

"Doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks. Even for us, it's hard to understand the sudden transition from relative anonymity to worldwide attention — both raves and ridicules, in a matter of days," Danica Russell said in a statement.

Researchers don't know how many people suffer from the condition, mainly because symptoms are fleeting, but those with personality disorders are at greater risk for having an episode. Brief reactive psychosis is triggered by trauma or major stress such as an accident or death of a loved one. Other stressors can include sleep deprivation or dehydration.

Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions and strange speech and behavior. People typically recover within a few weeks without medication. Others have to take antipsychotic drugs to alleviate symptoms or undergo talk therapy to cope.

The condition causes "temporary debilitation, but in general people have good recoveries," said Dr. Stephen Marder, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In some cases, doctors say brief reactive psychosis can signal the beginning of a more serious mental illness such as schizophrenia.

Danica Russell said it may be months before her husband returns to San Diego-based Invisible Children.

"Jason will get better. He has a long way to go, but we are confident that he will make a full recovery," she said.

Russell narrates the 30-minute video "Kony 2012," which has been viewed more than 84 million times on YouTube since it was released this month. In the video, Russell talks to his young son, Gavin, about Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army.

The Invisible Children group has been criticized for not spending enough directly on the people it intends to help and for oversimplifying the 26-year-old conflict involving the LRA and its leader, Kony, a bush fighter wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Invisible Children has acknowledged the video overlooked many nuances but said it was a "first entry point" that puts the conflict "in an easily understandable format." It said money that directly benefits the cause accounted for more than 80 percent of its spending from 2007 to 2011.

The Januzzi Effect
Amnesty International, George Clooney and the Bidding of Empire

by JOHN VINCENT

In March this year Frank S. Jannuzi was named Washington DC office head at Amnesty International USA (AIUSA). Frank, a former staffer with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is Hitachi International Affairs Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the most powerful foreign policy pressure group in the world. Over the years, CFR’s membership has included 22 US secretaries of state.

Those on CFR’s Board of Directors today include Robert E. Rubin, former CEO of Goldman Sachs, Secretary of the Treasury under Clinton and special advisor to the Obama Administration; Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State who when on 60 Minutes was asked by Lesley Stahl on the effects of U.S. sanctions against Iraq: “We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?” Secretary of State Madeleine Albright replied: “I think this is a very hard choice, but the price–we think the price is worth it”; Peter G. Peterson, of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, who has been pushing for the destruction of Social Security for over ten years; and Penny Pritzker, Chairman and CEO of PSP Capital, who besides being one of Chicago’s wealthiest woman is also on the Chicago School Board closing public schools in the poorest parts of the city.

These are names not typically associated with humanitarian causes.

In taking his new position Jannuzi is quoted on AIUSA’s website as saying: “I am thrilled to be joining Amnesty International and look forward to connecting the passion and expertise of AIUSA with the policy-making community in Washington that I know well.”

And how might that work?

In a CFR moderated discussion George Clooney discussed the plight of the Sudanese in the Nuba Mountains who are caught up in the country’s civil war. Not surprising the area includes a proposed pipeline route that will carry oil to a seaport in the north.

So George gets arrested on Friday March 16th, and on Monday the 19th AIUSA begins an email campaign calling for Sudanese President al-Bashir to be brought to justice with the banner: What was actor George Clooney doing in jail, while Sudan’s president and indicted war crimes suspect Omar al-Bashir runs free?

Interestingly, March 16th was the day AIUSA announced Jannuzi’s new position with the organization.

So is AIUSA, along with George Clooney and Hollywood in general, supporting the CFR in their effort to manage the American people’sperceptions of Africa for the purpose of furthering their government’s foreign policy objectives in the region?

Why does AIUSA mount campaigns focused on Africa – Kony 2012, Sudan’s al-Bashir, and the investigation of civilian deaths in Libya – but not promote similar campaigns within the borders of the US calling for the arrest of its known war criminals?

And why doesn’t AIUSA mount campaigns to stop US humanitarian crimes before they occur? The Iran war is the next human rights catastrophe that will be unleashed on the world, but AIUSA isn’t trying to stop it. Why not?

Are AIUSA’s commendable humanitarian efforts being used as a screen for the organization’s work in the service of the American empire?

I still don't see what anyone at that charity did that merited the entire world being so outraged about it that they drove the guy who made the movie out of his mind.

I mean, the video was politically simplistic and had some errors. That's a shame. The guy is a Christian. That's his business. There are allegations that money goes to the Uganda military and/or government. But I don't see an iota's proof that they do.

This is just cyber-bullying, as far as I can tell.

Pat Robertson's charitiies probably STILL ARE doing the kind of shit he was doing with Charles Taylor. Their tax returns are certainly a great, big incomplete mess.

Why doesn't everyone gang up and go after HIM?

The "Kony 2012" viral event is a psyops campaign carefully timed with keywords and themes. The usual.
'Oh, those murderous blacks. But let us, the spook media, tell you how mistaken people are about news cycle perceptions.'

Now that attention is on this guy, slip a little chemical to him to discredit and hype some more. Standard spook ops for decades.

I kept saying "Kanye" instead of "Kony" when I started to talk about this thing. hint hint

Never mind "hint hint", Hugh. Spare us the coyness. What do you mean?

Specify. Why did you (i.e. you) keep confusing the first name of a black American rapper with the surname of an African murderer?

"Kony" and "Kanye" are homonyms. A common psyops technique. Like "Karzai" and 'car's eye.'

Obscuring the civil rights movement's pacifist Christianity with the murderous "Lords Army" is a meme-reversal.

Um, that's essentially their whole purpose, in the video, to get western military support for the Ugandan government. That's what it lays out towards the end of the video.

And that is just not a sober person, caught pacing around naked on the streets on San Diego.

Oh. My mistake!

Which I regret. It does seem to me as if the negative response is disproportionate to the cause, from a distance. But you're quite right. You couldn't be righter, in fact.

I amend my earlier post to:

SInce barracuda just deletes my posts over and over and over (4 times in 15 minutes)...new information!
The use of 'look-alikes' was introduced into the Kony meme-spread.

http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/kony-2012
.....
Kony 2012 Video
On February 20th, 2012, Invisible Children uploaded a 30 minute video to Vimeo titled “Kony 2012” which detailed Kony’s history followed by instructions for viewers to support the cause by spreading the video and donating to the organization. The video, directed and narrated by Jason Russell, features clips of his time spent in Africa and footage of Russell’s conversations with his son. The YouTube version was uploaded on March 5th.
....
In the video, Russel explains his plan to solicit support from 20 notable celebrities, athletes and billionaires actively involved in global humanitarian efforts and 12 political figures to support the legislations against child soldiers. The video also announces the “Cover the Night” event, which would entail spreading Kony 2012-related media in major cities from sundown on April 20th in order to raise awareness.
Notable Developments
Online Reception
The video accumulated nearly 7 million views on Vimeo within 16 days and the YouTube upload received over 43 million views in the span of 72 hours. A /r/KONY2012 subreddit dedicated to the campaign was created on February 26th, 2012. On March 6th, the video was submitted to the /r/atheism[14] subreddit and reached the front page accumulating over 1,000 up votes in less than 24 hours. It subsequently reached the front page of the /r/worldpolitics subreddit several hours later. On March 7th, the hashtags #makekonyfamous [10], #kony2012 [11] and #stopkony [12] became globally trending terms on Twitter, some of which ranked higher than New iPad, according to the Associated Press.[24]
......
News Media Coverage
Beginning on March 7th, the story was covered by major news outlets including NPR[18], The Huffington Post[19], Washington Post[20] and the Telegraph[21] which remarked how fast the viral video had managed to generate interest in the campaign. At a news conference on March 8th, White House press secretary Jay Carney said the president praised the people who responded to this “unique crisis of conscience” and pledged to continue the disarmament of the Lord’s Resistance Army.
Celebrity Support
Following the massive coverage in the news, numerous celebrities including Justin Beiber, Nicki Minaj and Emma Stone joined the social media bandwagon by retweeting and posting status updates related to the topic of Kony 2012. On March 7th, Diddy tweeted a link to the video with the hashtag #StopKONY, which has been retweeted over 60,000 times.

Controversy
On March 7th, the “Visible Children” Tumblr[15] was launched with a blog post criticizing the Invisible Children organization’s expenditures using charity dollars. The post received over 21,000 notes in less than two hours.
Invisible Children has been condemned time and time again. As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they haven’t had their finances externally audited. But it goes way deeper than that.
Another controversy arose with a photograph in which the activists can be seen posing with firearms and other soldiers. Some NGOs criticized that Invisible Children neglected the principle of unarmed neutrality while operating in dangerous areas.

ImageThe same day, similar threads questioning the motives of Invisible Children’s campaign surfaced on the frontpage of Reddit, including a /r/DAE post titled “am I the only who who is suspicious about Invisible Children, the organization behind Kony 2012”[13] and a /r/entconomics post titled “The Kony 2012 Campaign is a Fraud”[17], which argued against supporting the corrupt Ugandan Government. The Daily What[22] also published an article calling Invisible Children “an extremely shady nonprofit” and provided links to Charity Navigator[23] profiles for alternative charities to donate to.
On March 8th, Invisible Children posted a response to the criticisms on their official website[30] and justified their expenditures by outlining their three main goals of raising awareness, supporting large-scale advocacy campaigns and operating programs to assist victims on the ground. A screenshot of the organization’s annual financial support was provided in the post:

Image

Carl Weathers Trolling
On March 8th, threads began appearing on the image board 4chan with instructions to post a photo of American actor Carl Weathers from his performance as Major George Dillon in the 1987 science fiction thriller Predator. When posting the photo with a message of praise, the prank is meant to anger people that have confused Weathers with Joseph Kony.
