The insulting is a little uncalled for, undead, but, Stephen, your perspective is based completely on ignorance because you've never taken these substances. You make yourself look like an idiot. Mushrooms are the exact opposite of glue-sniffing or binge-drinking. It's not really a debate; it's just a matter of people who have used plant entheogens and people who haven't. The latter is uninformed on the matter.
I usually ignore the Stephens of the world. I'd rather re-assert McKenna's point about mushrooms: Tons of people have had positive experiences with mushrooms at low doses, but a precious few have broken through to what is called "the Logos," a contact with a distinctly alien Other, but that is what the mushroom is all about. Essentially everyone who does encounter the Logos sees this as the greatest mystery of life, by a very long shot. The reason most people with an open mind and good intention don't get there is simply a matter of method. You have to have a clear head- don't combine with caffeine/sugar/alcohol- an empty stomach- don't eat for six hours previous- and take a *really big dose (5 grams or so)* in a totally isolated, safe, dark environment. What you thus experience behind closed eyelids- that... challenges the entire precipice of western civilization. Now hiring for explorers into this realm. I'm on a break myself, but itching to get back into hyperspace soon enough.
The thing about the red pill is it's ten thousand more joyous than the stimulant-alcohol monotony of mainstream society, but it can certainly be scary as fuck, especially if you're in any way materially attached to this babylonian existence. Mushrooms are a tad gentler than DMT, but they both take you to the Logos/hyperspace. No other psychedelics have this defining characteristic; McKenna was famed for drawing attention to this simple fact.
Bill Hicks described it nicely with his touch of humor; may he rest in peace:
