The Frightening Videodrome Of Today(MiamiMontreal Crazyness)

Postby 8bitagent » Fri Jun 01, 2012 2:41 am

The other night I'm eating with friends, paying no mind to the tv. But then the news comes on, and they actually lead with security footage of that homeless man getting his face ripped off on the Miami freeway. I had already received a text from someone saying "Did you hear the zombie apocalypse has started?" Couple days later some Huffpo level media sites show unimaginably horrific photos of the victim, I almost felt like throwing up. Comments left usually hovered around one liner jokes. This of course being peppered with all sorts of horrific cannibal incidents happening around the US and the world recently...but it's all one big 'meme joke' to people.

But the normalization of bad things is more than just welcomed. Today Bush was welcomed with open arms by Obama and the press corp at the White House, as if he was fucking MLK...with a glowing painting unveiled.

We have our government using children's show songs as part of their programming torture of detainees and convincing a large portion of the "leftists" that the near daily destruction of Muslims in Pakistan/Yemen/Somalia is a good thing. When the government coverups up mass suicide rates of vets(or when vets come back and do horrible, horrible things) well...dont look at that.
You look at the increasingly horrific level of brutality in recent films(Drive, Human Centipede series, Serbian Film, Snowtown, Kill List)
And you have some of the most horrific and frightening violence on the planet happening just a couple miles from the Texas border, en masse, in Mexico where children have become accustomed
to walking to school and seeing dismembered corpses. Mankind has seen this stuff since the dawn of early pre-man.

But where this normalization of horror seems to take a modern turn is in the advent of this 24-hour social media twitter Truman show panopticon. "We are the ones we are waiting for" was Obama's slogan in 2008...in reality, its more like "We are the ones we are watching". Maybe it's having just re-read William Gibson's brilliant post 9/11 mystery "Pattern Recognition" about a
cryptic video that goes viral online...but perhaps we're witnessing another level of whatever *this is*

I say this because I was genuinely shocked by the headline news regarding that Magnotta character. And I really shouldn't be. I couldn't even make it through a couple minutes of the online documentary showing the human aftermath of Obama's near daily drone attacks. But just reading one of the articles on CNN about this was bone chilling
Image

From that other thread, this guy seeded the internet with cryptic videos and postings much like Breivik and the Safeway Giffords shooter did. His apparent serial killer dating-animal killing-cross dressing-porn-occult side would be odd enough even before the posting of snuff videos and mailing body parts to major political party headquarters. From the comments you guys had in the other thread, it seems like this nut is creating some sort of Alternate Reality Game for the online age.

Terrorism no longer shocks. Zeta cartel crimes? Passe. As glimpsed in Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers, it seems like society almost seems ready made for the advent of the media saavy psycho killer. Just look at Anders Breivik, mugging for the camera. This Luka, one big ARG game that sadly people eat up. In an era where would be serial killers can find willing victims in underground chat rooms, I sadly feel the rubicon has long been crossed. Like the guy giving thumbs up after that ghastly scene in "Irreversible", all horror these days is tailor made for people's online comments.

We're truly reaching a new low in soul shattering sickness I'm afraid.

Videodrome looks almost quaint and prudish now. Which in retrospect makes it even more prophetic.

Not that it means anything, but: one of the porn peddlers Max meets early in the film was David Tsubouchi, who in the mid-90s became an Ontario Conservative cabinet minister and presided over crushing social service cuts. He advised welfare recipients faced with losing 1/4 of their benefits to learn to haggle over dented tuna tins.

I think it was the summer of '03 when I was with a group of 7 or 8 teenaged volunteers, all of whom-- boys and girls of varying backgrounds and ages-- were casually discussing watching the Daniel Pearl (purported) execution video. The conversation then moved to the variety of clips available showing people falling from the WTC, to rotten.com, to Faces of Death.

I realized yet again that the world was different. That teenage horrorshow and gross-out now encompassed real people, really dying.

BILL MAHER: The candidates are all dressing up for Halloween. Michele Bachmann is going as Wonder Woman. And her husband Marcus is going as Wonder Woman.

[Cheers and applause]

MAHER: No, he was going to go as Wonder Woman. Then he saw that tape, that video on the internet of Gaddafi getting a stick up his ass. Now he's going as Gaddafi.

[Cheers and applause, then boos]

MAHER: Come on. Only a minute into the show and you're booing me. I mean, come on. It's going to get worse.

Out of a writer's bullpen and into the mealy mouth of Bill Maher. None of them apparently noticing just how massively fucked up that joke is. But then, Obama and his handlers apparently thought the Jonas Bros-Predator Drone joke was a real hoot.

I diverge. I am not of the opinion things are worse or getting so. There is no new age of horror and there has been almost no innovation in the realm of torture in thousands of years. The screen is all that's new.

The original landlords my recently Irish-ized French heretic ancestors had to answer to were practitioners of torture as social control, and it's worth noting that they would often commit these acts in public rituals, in the middle of town. People were made examples of, a practice which has also seen little innovation since Mandarins were executing farmers on the high plains of China. Humans having a morbid (and frankly, erotic) fascination with Death is also not a recent development, so again, it keeps coming back to the screen.

Curiosity about getting hit by a train is little different from curiosity about anal sex. I used the power of photography + internets to indulge my curiosity about both, and around the same time, too.

Personally, I am more disturbed by Fifty Shades of Gray being on the NYT bestseller lists and transformed into an inevitable hit movie. I think that indicates a much more seismic shift in the Western consciousness and correlates to other societies in decay & decline in recent history, too.

Personally, I'm more disturbed by Cryptome's occasional transition into a soft-core police-state bondage porn site:

Good lord that's disturbing/sad. I guess once the giant snuff film known as 9/11 was replayed ad nauseum for weeks in 2001 and collectively seered into our minds, anything goes

Yeah that "ha ha" by Obama really bothered me, as just a few days prior he had authorized a series of drone strikes that had killed scores of civilians in Pakistan. It's like there's such a disconnect. Drone killing is as normal as garbage collectors and meter maids, one big video game

I agree, there has long been the spectre of the public love of death. Even if the person is clearly innocent(such as in small towns in the south white southerners would laughingly smile and pose with a recently hung/charred black male ) But as you said, there was no tv/internet.

With the US government and media really hyping the world changing importance of twitter/facebook/social networking(not realize that can backfire on the PTB too!) its not just a public square hanging. It's now just random killings being able to be seen by anyone worldwide, with cynical LOL comments attached. That's why I call it the new horror show, because now it's "ironic" and normalized. There's not even a point anymore.

Anyone here think that the Nick Berg case really helped usher in this advent I'm talking about? Not many people were familiar with the Budd Duyer incident or the grizzly Charles Ng case.
But the Nick Berg event almost seemed to be the catalyst to this sick new period. I am absolutely shocked from what I read on CNN about that snuff video posted with the comments.
All one big "Lulz" to people. I mean in Pakistan a popular video was of an 11 year old "Islamist" beheading a guy on camera.

So glad Ive never seen any of this shit. Bad enough I had to sit through endless replays of 9/11.

Oh dear...what the heck happened? I mean if they had to cover the non story, one photo would suffice...not these lurid pseudo erotic photos.

These individual grotesqueries are just the commercials. The real show is strictly a subscriber edition to be found behind the trillion-dollar paywall.

8-bit, it's odd you should say this. I thought yesterday, "What if it's just the next op?" Earthquakes are stale, people don't even discuss them much anymore. They used to be days-worth of talk on forums: "ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE!"

They've dished up the terrorism propaganda far too long, the first- (and probably second-) worlders are bored out of their skulls by it. No longer afraid.

Rising sea water? Meh.
Tornadoes? NIMBY.
Banker scandals? What'r ya gonna do?
Priest pedophiles? Back page news.
Occupy? Winter is such a bitch.

But, now, zombies.....they could really stir the moldering pot, couldn't they? The stew is getting cold and dried out....must.do.something.to.feed.fear.to.the.masses.

Which makes one wonder just how they manage to get such a thing started all at once.....

I always try to embrace the Akashic Records and listen to its whisper stream as it tells me
all is as it should be with the universe.
After reading Jane Roberts/Seth and Ram Dass The Miracle of Love/The Only Dance There is
I made my peace with the Universe.
Now that we know time is an illusion; that Parallel Universes exist; multiple time streams flowing forward and back-up and down;
all that is left is to stay in the moment and remember what the dance is all about, eh?

What is the dance all about? Just when I think I might have a handle on it, then I don't.

If someone knows, I'd appreciate a hint or two.
