Boy Scouts helped alleged molesters cover tracks, files show
When volunteers and employees were suspected of sexually abusing children, Boy Scout officials often didn't tell police, files from 1970-91 reveal. In many cases they sought to hide the situation.

By Kim Christensen, Jason Felch | Los Angeles Times
September 16, 2012

Over two decades, the Boy Scouts of America failed to report hundreds of alleged child molesters to police and often hid the allegations from parents and the public.

A Los Angeles Times review of 1,600 confidential files dating from 1970 to 1991 has found that Scouting officials frequently urged admitted offenders to quietly resign — and helped many cover their tracks.

Volunteers and employees suspected of abuse were allowed to leave citing bogus reasons such as business demands, "chronic brain dysfunction" and duties at a Shakespeare festival.

The details are contained in the organization's confidential "perversion files," a blacklist of alleged molesters, that the Scouts have used internally since 1919. Scouts' lawyers around the country have been fighting in court to keep the files from public view.

As The Times reported in August, the blacklist often didn't work: Men expelled for alleged abuses slipped back into the program, only to be accused of molesting again. Now, a more extensive review has shown that Scouts sometimes abetted molesters by keeping allegations under wraps.

In the majority of cases, the Scouts learned of alleged abuse after it had been reported to authorities. But in more than 500 instances, the Scouts learned about it from boys, parents, staff members or anonymous tips.

In about 400 of those cases — 80% — there is no record of Scouting officials reporting the allegations to police. In more than 100 of the cases, officials actively sought to conceal the alleged abuse or allowed the suspects to hide it, The Times found.

In 1982, a Michigan Boy Scout camp director who learned of allegations of repeated abuse by a staff member told police he didn't promptly report them because his bosses wanted to protect the reputation of the Scouts and the accused staff member.

"He stated that he had been advised by his supervisors and legal counsel that he should neutralize the situation and keep it quiet," according to a police report in the file.

That same year, the director of a Boy Scout camp in Virginia wrote to the Scouts' top lawyer, asking for help dealing with a veteran employee suspected of a "lifelong pattern" of abuse that had not been reported to police.

"When a problem has surfaced, he has been asked to leave a position 'of his own free will' rather than risk further investigation," the director wrote. "The time has come for someone to make a stand and prevent further occurrences."

There is no indication the Scouts took the matter to law enforcement.

In 1976, five Boy Scouts wrote detailed complaints accusing a Pennsylvania scoutmaster of two rapes and other sex crimes, according to his file. He abruptly resigned in writing, saying he had to travel more for work.

"Good luck to you in your new position," a top troop representative wrote back. He said he was accepting the resignation "with extreme regret."

Scouting officials declined to be interviewed for this article. In a prepared statement, spokesman Deron Smith said, "We have always cooperated fully with any request from law enforcement and today require our members to report even suspicion of abuse directly to their local authorities."

The organization instituted that requirement in 2010. Before then, the policy was to obey state laws, which didn't always require youth groups to report abuse.

In some instances, however, the Scouts may have violated those state laws. Since the early 1970s, for example, New Jersey has required anyone who suspects child abuse to report it. In several cases there, the Scouts received firsthand reports of alleged abuse, but nothing in the files indicates they informed authorities.

In the 1970s and '80s, secrecy was embedded in the Scouts' policies and procedures for handling child sexual abuse.

A cover sheet that accompanied many confidential files included a check box labeled "Internal (only scouts know)" as an option for how cases were resolved. A form letter sent to leaders being dismissed over abuse allegations stated: "We are making no accusations and will not release this information to anyone, so our action in no way will affect your standing in the community."

That letter was included in the organization's 1972 policy on how to remove unfit leaders, which, according to an attached memo, was kept confidential "because of misunderstandings which could develop if it were widely distributed."

The files at times provide an incomplete account of how abuse allegations were resolved. In his statement, the Scouting spokesman said, "In many instances, basic details are missing as they were not relevant to the BSA's sole reason for keeping files, which was to help identify and keep a list of individuals deemed to be unfit for membership in Scouting."

Still, they reveal a culture in which even known molesters were shown extraordinary deference.

In a 1987 case in Washington state, a district executive wrote to the national office complaining that his boss had refused to put a former scoutmaster on the blacklist, despite a molestation conviction, "because he has done so much for camp and is a nice guy."

He had handed a newspaper clipping of the conviction to his boss, who "crumpled it up, said he saw it already, and then said, 'Why don't you just put it up on a billboard for everyone to see?'" the executive wrote. "Since that time, nothing has been done."

A Maryland leader, who in 1990 "readily agreed" that abuse allegations against him were true, was given six weeks to resign and told he could give "his associates whatever reason that he chose," his file shows.

"This gave him an opportunity to withdraw from Scouting in a graceful manner to be determined by him," an official wrote. "We also reminded [him] that he had agreed to keep the whole matter confidential and we would not talk to anyone in order to give [him] complete ability to voluntarily withdraw."

In many cases, Scouting officials said they were keeping allegations quiet as a way of sparing young victims embarrassment.

The result was that some alleged molesters went on to abuse other children, according to the Scouts' documents and court records.

With 50 years in Scouting, Arthur W. Humphries appeared to be a model leader, winning two presidential citations and the Scouts' top award for distinguished service — the Silver Beaver — for his work with disabled boys in Chesapeake, Va.

Unknown to most in town, he also was a serial child molester.

A few months after Humphries' arrest in 1984, local Scouting official Jack Terwilliger told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper that no one at the local Scout council had had suspicions about Humphries.

But that was not true. Records in Humphries' file show that six years earlier, Terwilliger had ordered officials to interview a Scout who gave a detailed account of Humphries' repeated acts of oral sex on him.

"He then told me to do the same and I did," the 12-year-old boy said in a sworn statement in 1978.

Officials not only failed to report Humphries' alleged crime to police, records show — they also gave him a strong job reference two years later, when he applied for a post at a national Scouting event.

"I believe the attached letters of recommendation and the newspaper write-up will give you a well rounded picture of Art," Terwilliger wrote. "If selected, I am sure that he would add much to the handicapped awareness trail at the 1981 Jamboree."

Humphries continued to work with Scouts and molested at least five more boys before police, acting on a tip, stopped him in 1984. He was convicted of abusing 20 Boy Scouts, some as young as 8, and was sentenced to 151 years in prison.

By then, one of the Scouts he'd abused a decade earlier had become his accomplice. He was convicted of molesting many of the same boys at Humphries' house.

Humphries and Terwilliger are both deceased.

The Boy Scouts' lawyers have long contended that keeping such files confidential is key to protecting the privacy of victims, of those who report sexual abuse and of anyone falsely accused. But over the years, hundreds of the files have been admitted into evidence — usually under seal — in lawsuits brought by alleged victims. The Times reviewed 1,600 of the nearly 1,900 files that came to light as a result of a 1992 court case.

Hundreds more will soon become widely available. In June, the Oregon Supreme Court ordered the release of 1,247 of the Scouts' confidential files covering two decades beginning in 1965. The files were submitted in a 2010 lawsuit that resulted in a nearly $20-million judgment against the Scouts.

The release of the files, many of which were included in The Times' review, raises the prospect of a costly wave of litigation for the Boy Scouts. In many states, however, statutes of limitation will curb victims' ability to sue.

The Boy Scouts of America generally has responded to allegations of past abuse by emphasizing its increased efforts to protect children in recent decades.

In the 1990s, for instance, it mandated background checks of staffers and in 2008 extended that requirement to all volunteers. The organization also has stepped up child abuse prevention training. The effect of those policies is hard to gauge because the Scouts have neither released nor analyzed more recent files.

Regardless, the Scouts have taken no steps to account for unreported crimes years ago. In some of those cases, not even parents of abuse victims were told what happened.

At a Rhode Island Boy Scout camp in 1971, a scoutmaster discovered a 12-year-old boy performing oral sex on an assistant troop leader, William Lazzareschi, behind a tent.

"Mr. Lazzareschi made me do it to him," the young Scout told officials, according to the file.

Lazzareschi "admitted his role in the act" and said he'd never done it before, the file states. He was expelled from Scouting and told to stay away from the boy. Nothing in the file indicates the Scouts called police.

The records do show that the boy was counseled "with positive results" by the Rev. Edmond C. Micarelli, the camp's Catholic chaplain.

"Upon Father Micarelli's recommendation, the parents were not notified," a report states.

Micarelli's reasoning was not explained. But in 1990, he also wound up on the blacklist after a man told a Scouting official that the priest had raped him and his younger brother as boys. In 2002, the Diocese of Providence paid $13.5 million to 36 victims who sued Micarelli and 10 other priests, alleging sex abuse dating to at least 1975.

Lazzareschi was convicted of sexual assault in 1997 and possession of child pornography in 2005, but he is no longer in prison, state records show. Neither he nor Micarelli, who retired to Florida more than 20 years ago, could be reached for comment.

The Scouts sometimes had help in keeping abuse out of the public eye.

When a Los Angeles Scout leader was caught by police with hundreds of photos of naked Scouts in 1984 — many showing him giving enemas to boys — Scouting officials worked closely with police and the county children services department to keep the case from becoming public and embarrassing the Scouts.

A summary of a meeting between Scouting officials and local agencies contained this conclusion: "We recognize that this unfortunate situation was no reflection on the Boy Scouts of America whose integrity and reputation must be maintained."

In July 1987, a top official at Boy Scouts headquarters sent an internal "news advisory" to national leaders about allegations against a high-ranking Scout council leader in Milwaukee.

"Dr. Thomas Kowalski, chairman of health and safety for the Milwaukee County Council, one of the most prominent physicians in the state and one of the authors of the Wisconsin laws on child abuse, has been removed from his BSA volunteer position(s) following allegations that he made sexual advances to two 16-year-old youths at the council's summer long-term camp," the advisory read.

Kowalski admitted masturbating while fondling the two boys. Wisconsin Scouting officials reported the incidents to police, as required by state law, but the parents chose not to press charges, the file says.

The Scouts then turned to a well-connected board member to keep the matter out of the news media — an unnamed publisher of local newspapers.

The publisher "is aware of the situation but apparently will not be passing the information to his editors," the Scouting official wrote.

The case was not reported in the press, and Kowalski continued to work with children for the next 14 years, until he retired from his medical practice in 2001.

In an interview, Kowalski, now 75 and living in Milwaukee, said that he had received psychiatric counseling for years and had never re-offended.

"The topic has not come up until your phone call today," he said. "Had that been publicized, I would have been out of business, reputation destroyed, and I don't know how I would have faced people at church."

New names in alleged pedophile ring around Sandusky.

Child Prostitute: Sandusky Had Tri-State Pedophile Ring

(Newser) – Jerry Sandusky was once part of a pedophile ring that included former Poly Prep football coach Phil Foglietta, a man identifying himself as a former child prostitute is alleging. In an email to Poly Prep officials, Greg Bucceroni, now 48, says he was paid to have sex with Foglietta in 1979, the New York Daily News reports. He alleges that the ring also included late Philadelphia businessman Ed Savitz and Wharton School of Business professor Lawrence Scott Ward.

He describes being taken to an event for Sandusky's Second Mile charity 'for the purpose of child prostitution with Jerry Sandusky," but winding up with Foglietta instead—who "was introduced as Coach Phil who coached youth football in NYC." He also alleges that he was abused by Savitz multiple times in the late '70s. While Savitz's pedophilia came to light in 1992, the alleged connection to Sandusky, Ward, and Foglietta is new.

Self-described 'child prostitute' connects Jerry Sandusky to Poly Prep sex abuse scandal and coach Phil Foglietta

Greg Bucceroni sends off email detailing explosive allegations that late Poly Prep football coach, whom he met at fund-raiser for Sandusky's Second Mile charity, was involved in child sex ring.

Jerry Sandusky, convicted on 45 counts of sexual abuse of minors, is now connected to the Poly Prep sex abuse scandal after an email from a self-described 'child prostitute.'
A Philadelphia man who claims to have been paid to have sex with former Poly Prep football coach Phil Foglietta in 1979 as part of an alleged pedophile ring that included Jerry Sandusky sent an email to several Poly Prep officials on Monday - including current headmaster David Harman - detailing the explosive allegation.

Greg Bucceroni, 48, also sent the email to Kevin Mulhearn, the Orangeburg, N.Y., attorney who represents 12 men who sued the school, alleging Poly Prep officials knew that Foglietta was a sexual predator but covered it up for decades in order to protect the elite institution's reputation and fund-raising efforts.

Bucceroni says he was a teenager when he said he met Foglietta at a Second Mile fund-raiser near State College, Pa. The Second Mile organization, which helped at-risk youths, was founded in 1977 by Sandusky, the former Penn State football coach who was convicted on 45 counts of sexual abuse of minors in June. Sandusky, who is scheduled to be sentenced next month, is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison.

In the email to Poly Prep, Bucceroni said he was "a child prostitute" and was associated with a pedophile ring that included Sandusky, Foglietta, now-deceased Philadelphia businessman Ed Savitz and former Wharton School of Business professor Lawrence Scott Ward, who is serving a lengthy prison sentence for trafficking in child porn and smuggling photos and videos of himself having sex with a teenage Brazilian boy.

"(Between) 1977-1980 I was a child prostitute associated with a tri-state (NYC-NJ-PA) pedophile ring. (During the) summer of 1979 I was brought to the State College area by Ed Savitz for the purpose of child prostitution with Jerry Sandusky at a Second Mile fundraiser," Bucceroni wrote in the email. "Due to time constraints, Sandusky became unavailable and I was introduced to Phil Foglietta by Ed Savitz & Jerry Sandusky. Foglietta was introduced to us as Coach Phil who coached youth football in NYC. Foglietta agreed to pay $200.00 for child sex and followed us back to a Philadelphia hotel, myself (sic)ad another child prostitute then engaged coach Phil in child sex."

A spokeswoman for the school said Poly Prep had no comment on Bucceroni's email.

In a series of interviews, Bucceroni told the Daily News that Savitz and Sandusky knew each other through Second Mile, political fund-raising and sports events.

Bucceroni said his stepfather completed paperwork for the boy, then 16, to be enrolled in Second Mile in 1980 and that Bucceroni and Savitz delivered it to Sandusky, but that an altercation between Bucceroni and Savitz that same year destroyed any chances of him being accepted.

Bucceroni claims to have been abused by Savitz over several years in the late '70s. Savitz was charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse in 1992 in the horrific case, but died of AIDS before his trial was to begin in 1993. More than 2,500 photos of Savitz's alleged victims were seized by authorities who raided his homes, including an apartment near Philadelphia's posh Rittenhouse Square.

Lynne Abraham, the former Philadelphia district attorney who prosecuted the Savitz case, told The News that she was unaware of any connection between Savitz, Sandusky and Ward.

"I know nothing about this," she said.

At a hearing on Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Frederic Block - who is overseeing the Poly Prep sexual abuse lawsuit filed by 10 former students and two day campers - urged the plaintiffs and the school's lawyers to reach a settlement. A source familiar with the case said no settlement has yet been reached, but that there have been several settlement conferences before a magistrate judge.

The lawsuit filed by Mulhearn in 2009, which seeks $20 million for each of the plaintiffs who say they were assaulted by Foglietta, claims that Foglietta may have abused hundreds of other boys. According to the suit, a plaintiff identified as John Doe III says he found hundreds of photos of naked boys, apparently taken with a Kodak Instamatic in Foglietta's apartment, when he opened a dresser drawer in the coach's bedroom in 1971.

Foglietta died in 1998. According to a source familiar with the coach, he claimed that he had been offered a job on several occasions to serve on Joe Paterno's Penn State football staff at Penn State. But Foglietta chose to stay at the Dyker Heights school because, according to the source, "he wanted to be big fish in a small pond."

Mulhearn declined to comment Bucceroni's email.

Bucceroni told The News that he was contacted by authorities on Wednesday to discuss Foglietta, and in the email to Poly Prep, he says that he has cooperated with the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspectors.

i wonder if this one is related?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/1 ... _ref=crime

BOSTON — The former medical director of an
exclusive Massachusetts prep school was reprimanded for using a school computer
to access adult pornography, one of the many reasons his appointment was not
renewed, the school says.
But John Palfrey, the head of Phillips Academy in Andover, stressed in a Friday
email to students, parents, staff and faculty that the school's concerns with
Dr. Richard Keller are unrelated to a federal child pornography charge against
him. Palfrey said he does not believe any of the students were the subject of
Keller's alleged crime.
Keller, 56, a pediatric endocrinologist, was arrested at his Andover home
Thursday. He remained in custody Friday and has a Monday bail hearing. Both
Children's Hospital in Boston, where he works, and Harvard Medical School, where
he is a pediatrics instructor, say they have placed him on leave.
Federal prosecutors allege that Keller purchased and ordered more than 50 DVDs
of child pornography online. During a search of his home, authorities found more
than 500 photographs and 60 to 100 DVDs of child pornography, according to an
affidavit.
Keller was the medical director at Phillips Academy in Andover for 19 years.
Palfrey said in the email that the school told Keller in April of last year that
his contract would not be renewed. Palfrey said Keller resigned and left that
same month.
Palfrey said the school did not renew Keller's contract because of professional
misconduct unrelated to the federal charge. He said the reasons included the
reprimand in 1999, an inappropriate cartoon Keller showed students in 2002, and
an inappropriate voicemail he left a colleague in 2010.
Children's Hospital has said no complaints or concerns have been expressed by
any patients or family members about the care Keller provided to them at
Children's.
Paige Kelly, a federal public defender who represented Keller in court after his
arrest, didn't return a call seeking comment. If convicted, Keller faces a
mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 20 years in prison.

Phillips Academy in Andover is one of the nation's most selective prep schools
and alumni include both presidents Bush, Jack Lemmon and Humphrey Bogart
.

BOSTON, Sept 13 (Reuters) - A prominent Boston physician, who served as medical
director of the famed prep school Phillips Academy for nearly two decades, was
arrested on Thursday and charged with receiving child pornography at his school
office.

A search of Richard Keller's home turned up more than 500 photographs and as
many as 100 DVDs full of pornography, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston said
in a statement. An associated complaint described the content of some of the
DVDs, which mostly featured young boys in a variety of situations.

The complaint noted that on multiple occasions, orders for pornographic DVDs
were delivered directly to the Isham Health Center on Phillips' grounds.

Keller, 56, was medical director of Phillips for 19 years, ending in 2011. A
prestigious boarding school that dates to the 1780s, it counts both former
presidents Bush among its graduates.

The prominent people who attended the school during Keller's time there include
Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, actress Olivia Wilde and King Jigme Khesar
Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan. There was no suggestion in the criminal complaint,
though, that Keller had abused any students while at the school.

Phillips Academy, in a brief statement on its website, said it was fully
assisting prosecutors and that it planned to brief the community in coming days.

More recently Keller worked as a pediatric endocrinologist at Boston Children's
Hospital. The hospital said it put Keller on administrative leave as soon as it
learned of the complaint.

"No complaints or concerns have been expressed by any patients or family members
about the care Dr. Keller provided while he was at Children's," the hospital
said in a statement.

A check of Keller's record with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in
Medicine shows no criminal convictions, hospital or board discipline or
malpractice claim payments in the last decade. If convicted in this case, he
faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years in prison. (Reporting By

Jersey man charged in child porn investigation

By Mari A. Schaefer

A New Jersey man with possible past ties to Boy Scouting on the Main Line has been charged by federal agents with receiving and distributing child pornography, officials said.

Gerrett Conover, 47, of Woolwich Township in Gloucester County, was arrested Thursday by U.S. Customs after he entered the county from Canada with a computer allegedly holding more than 50 images of child pornography. He is charged with once count of receipt and distribution of child pornography, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Conover came to the attention of federal investigators in Boston after he allegedly traded child pornography images with another individual over the Internet. During one Internet chat, he allegedly stated he had a long-term relationship with an underage boy and that he served as a Boy Scout leader, officials said.

Radnor Township Police Lt. Andrew Block said they were alerted by federal authorities who are investigating possible ties Conover had to the Boy Scouts on the Main Line more than 10 years ago.

STUDENT EDITOR PUBLISHES STORY ON HIS OWN AFTER IT’S SPIKED BY COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Alex Green, editor of the student newspaper at Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., heard over the summer that his Biblical Studies professor was leaving the school. He emailed the teacher, David Morgan, and got a confirmation — and, somewhat oddly, an attached statement from the Christian liberal arts school’s president that said the prof was off “to pursue other opportunities.”

The student editor later learned there was more to the story: Morgan had been arrested in June and faced charges after “after having attempted to meet with a minor child” at a gas station. Green wrote a story based on public records and was prepared to run it in last Friday’s Bryan College Triangle. Then school president Dr. Stephen Livesay ordered it killed.

Still, Green was determined to get the word out. He printed his story and a sidebar and distributed them on Monday. (They’re both posted after the jump.)

“I placed them around campus and at the doors of dorm rooms and at public areas around the school,” he tells Romenesko readers. “They were primarily in the main administration building, the library and the student center. … [A PDF] was emailed and entrusted to a select few current students and alumni in the case that fake papers began to surface.”

Green knows he could be expelled for distributing the story, but “the school has not made any comment or remark about me or my future at the school at this point,” he says. “The president has planned a campus-wide announcement at 4:30 p.m. As of now, that is all I’m aware of in terms of their response.”

Here’s an excerpt from his sidebar about the decision to publish the piece on his own:

I am aware that on the heels of the Penn State football tragedy, the minds of many people will jump without much thought to similarities between us and them.

Bryan College is not Penn State.

Had one individual in the Penn State program stepped up and revealed the truth about the actions of Jerry Sandusky, there would have been no fallout 14 years later.

Joe Paterno could have died a hero. Instead, he died a goat. Penn State could have been praised. Instead, they are broken.

Bryan College is not Penn State because there are people here that will not attempt to save face by dusting over the arrest of Dr. David Morgan.

Printing this story will not cause a Penn State situation for Bryan. I believe it will prevent one.

That’s why I’m dispensing it.

“We are Penn State” was their approach. “Christ above all” is ours.

Green’s stories are after the jump at

http://www.wral.com/business/story/11614677/

LONDON — For decades, Jimmy Savile was a fixture on British television — an
eccentric, aggressively jocular host of children's shows and a tireless charity
fundraiser. When he died last year at 84 — by then knighted as Sir Jimmy — he
drew tributes from Prince Charles and thousands of fans.
Now several women have come forward to claim "Sir Jimmy" was also a sexual
predator who abused underage girls.
The allegations have set off ripples of shock — but not of surprise. There had,
colleagues said, long been rumors. The main question being asked now is: Why did
no one do anything?
"Maybe it was just the fact that Jimmy knew everybody," Esther Rantzen, a former
BBC journalist and founder of the ChildLine child-protection charity, told
Channel 4 news. "We made him into the Jimmy Savile who was untouchable, who
nobody could criticize."
Child protection advocates say the case fits a pattern seen in the response to
the child-molesting Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and in
the English town of Rochdale, where a gang of men groomed vulnerable young girls
for sex. Authorities in both places have been criticized for failing to act on
claims of abuse.
The allegations against Savile are made in a documentary, "Exposure: The Other
Side of Jimmy Savile," to be shown Wednesday on Britain's ITV channel.
The program alleges that Savile abused girls in his Rolls-Royce, in a mobile
home and at BBC's television headquarters. It includes interviews with a woman
who says Savile sexually assaulted her while she was a student at the Duncroft
special-needs school near London, and with a former BBC staff member who says
she saw the entertainer indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
The BBC said no one had made any allegations against Savile while he worked
there.
"The BBC has conducted extensive searches of its files to establish whether
there is any record of misconduct or allegations of misconduct by Sir Jimmy
Savile during his time at the BBC. No such evidence has been found," it said in
a statement.
Savile's family has condemned the vilification of a man who is not alive to
defend himself.
"The guy hasn't been dead for a year yet and they're bringing these stories
out," said Savile's nephew Roger Foster. "It could affect his legacy, his
charity work, everything. I'm very sad and disgusted."
Mark Williams-Thomas, who made the documentary, insisted it was right "to tackle
this highly sensitive subject and allow these women to have a voice — a voice
that for many was not heard whilst they were children."
Savile was, in the words of his obituary in the Daily Telegraph, "an eccentric
adornment to British public life," known for his platinum hair, garish
tracksuits, chunky gold jewelry and ever-present cigars.
The former coal miner claimed to have organized Britain's first disco and to
have been the first DJ to use two turntables — a claim that has frequently been
disputed.

He was the original presenter of the music countdown program "Top of the Pops,"
which ran on BBC television from 1964 to 2006, featuring performances by
everyone from The Rolling Stones to the Sex Pistols. For almost 20 years from
1975, Savile also made dreams come true on "Jim'll Fix It," a TV show in which
he responded to children's letters by arranging for their wishes to be realized.
Savile championed a host of good causes, frequently running marathons to raise
money. He led work to collect millions for the creation of a national spinal
injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in southern England and bequeathed
money for a heart unit at Leeds infirmary named the Savile Institute.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to charity and entertainment,
and received a papal knighthood from the Vatican.

Prince Charles was among those who paid tribute when he died in October 2011 and
thousands paid their respects at his coffin.
Although he was part of the nation's childhood, Savile remained a distant figure
— well-known rather than well-loved. His guarded private life was the subject of
a much watched television documentary in 2000 by filmmaker Louis Theroux.
Savile, who never married and lived alone, told Theroux he'd never liked
children. Part of his home in Leeds was a shrine to his late mother, whom he
called The Duchess. After her death in 1973, he spent five days alone with her
body.
In recent days, several people have come forward to say Savile's predatory
behavior had been common knowledge in showbiz circles.
Music broadcaster Paul Gambaccini told ITV television that Savile had used his
charity work to discourage newspaper stories about his private life.
Gambaccini recalled Savile telling one journalist, "'well you could run that
story, but if you do there goes the funds that come in to Stoke Mandeville — do
you want to be responsible for the drying up of the charity donations?' And they
backed down."
Surrey Police have acknowledged that they questioned Savile in 2007 over an
allegation related to the Duncroft school. The file was passed on to
prosecutors, who declined to bring charges.
The Crown Prosecution Service is facing questions about its actions, as is the
BBC, Savile's longtime employer. The BBC's "Newsnight" program worked on a piece
on the abuse allegations late last year but decided not to broadcast it for what
the BBC called "editorial reasons."
Chris Cloke, head of child protection awareness at the National Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children, said if any good came from the Savile saga it
would be "a better understanding of how cases like this have happened, a greater
understanding that protecting children must be everybody's responsibility."
"There is a concern that children aren't listened to," he said, "and that is
something that has been around for a very long time."

Penn State’s Sandusky Defiant Before Sentencing
By TIM ROHAN
Published: October 9, 2012

BELLEFONTE, Pa. — The former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced Tuesday morning to 30 to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing young boys, crimes that roiled the university community and shook one of major college football’s most prominent programs.

Former Penn State assistant coach McQueary files whistleblower suit
By Rande Iaboni, CNN
updated 10:04 AM EDT, Wed October 3, 2012
(CNN) -- Former Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary, who testified that he saw Jerry Sandusky in a shower with an underage boy, filed a whistleblower lawsuit Tuesday against the university, according to a court document from Centre County, Pennsylvania.

McQueary was a key prosecution witness and was the only individual -- excluding the victims themselves -- who said he witnessed an apparent sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy. Sandusky, who has maintained his innocence, was convicted in June for abusing young boys over a 15-year-period.

In support of McQueary's whistleblower claim, the lawsuit states he was the only assistant football coach who was not invited to interview for employment with the incoming new head football coach after longtime coach Joe Paterno was fired amid the Sandusky scandal.

McQueary also claims he was the only former employee who was not reimbursed for legal fees, and that he did not receive his severance payments on time.

The lawsuit states McQueary believes those situations and his employment termination were the result of his cooperation with authorities in the Sandusky case.

According to the lawsuit, after testifying in court, McQueary was placed on administrative leave with pay in November 2011, only to later be terminated in July 2012. A copy of a letter from the university athletics director concerning the administrative leave was filed along with the lawsuit.
Penn State accreditation in jeopardy?

Calls to McQueary's lawyer after the suit was filed were not returned.

Seriously, what's up with that?

Image

There may have been little harm in giving him an OBE for charity work (1971), but a knighthood? More to the point, a papal knighthood too? Savile was a Knight Commander of St Gregory the Great (KCSG), the Pope doesn't give those away on cereal boxes; among the many celebs with them is Rupert Murdoch, albeit at a lower level than Uncle Jimmy, so far as I can see.

Doesn't the honours scrutiny committee and assorted lesser committees do any discreet vetting of the private character of recipients? Doesn't the pope have a bloke who watches out for his reputation? Even to ask the question is to invite peals of laughter, given the number of dodgy types who used to be honoured, less so now in Britain, I think.

And don't think the K was nodded through in a fit of New Labour sentimentality. Sir Jim Arose in the birthday honours of mid-1990, when steely Margaret Thatcher was still in No 10. The papal K arrived the same year, when steely John Paul II was pope and the prefect for the sacred congregation for the doctrine of the faith (1981-2005) – the head of the Vatican's intelligence service and its inquisition – was the future Pope Benedict XVI.

As Pope Benny's old friend and critic Hans Kung pointed out in the Guardian last week, he already has enough to answer for in covering up sexual abuse of children by priests without having Uncle Jim's sordid career dropped on his doorstep.

Dottie Sandusky lashes out at youngest son in letter

By Jeremy Roebuck

Jerry Sandusky's wife, in a letter to the judge deciding her husband's fate, stood by him as a "man of very high morals" and trashed their adopted son for saying that he, too, had been sexually abused by his father.

"People need to know what kind of person he is," Dorothy "Dottie" Sandusky wrote of son Matt, 33, in the document, sent two weeks after her husband's conviction and obtained by The Inquirer this week.

The letter, dated July 9, characterizes Matt Sandusky as a mentally ill liar and thief and asks Judge John M. Cleland to discount her youngest son's allegations in determining a sentence for her husband.

It was one of several similar missives Cleland considered before sentencing the former Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach Tuesday to 30 to 60 years in prison for the serial sexual abuse of 10 adolescent boys.

And although jurors did not learn of Matt Sandusky's accusations until after delivering their verdict in June and his alleged abuse played no part in his father's sentencing this week, the letter his mother penned laid bare the painful family divisions.

"They said the same kinds of things about all of Jerry Sandusky's victims," said lawyer Matt Casey, one of a team of lawyers that represents Matt Sandusky and several other accusers of the former coach. "It's part and parcel of this whole tragedy that these young men have been continually victimized by their abuser."

Dorothy and Jerry Sandusky have not spoken to their youngest son since he publicly accused his father of sexual abuse in the middle of his trial, the former coach's lawyers said this week. Matt Sandusky did not attend the sentencing Tuesday but his lawyers said he still planned to sue his adoptive father in civil court.

Calls to Matt and Dorothy Sandusky were not returned Wednesday.

In her letter, Dorothy Sandusky described her son's shift from onetime ally to his father's accuser as just one in a decades-long series of betrayals from the man she and her husband welcomed into their home as a troubled 17-year-old.

"We have forgiven him many times for all he has done to our family, thinking that he was changing his life," she wrote. "But he would always go back to stealing and lies."

Before his father's trial, Matt, one of the Sandusky family's six adopted children, had denied on several occasions that he had ever been abused, and he originally agreed to testify for the former coach's defense.

But hours after jurors began deliberating Jerry Sandusky's fate, the 33-year-old's lawyers dropped a bombshell, publicly disclosing that their client had turned state's witness and was now alleging that he had been abused.

Though he never testified at trial, Matt Sandusky explained his motivation in a taped interview with investigators leaked to the media in June.

"I came forward for different reasons," he said. "I mean, for my family, so that they can really have closure and see what the truth actually is."

But which family he was referring to remains unclear.

Matt Sandusky was born Matt Heichel, and he met Jerry Sandusky as an 8-year-old foster child with a troubled home life. He moved into the former coach's house nine years later and was formally adopted at 18. He has not yet stated publicly when his adoptive father allegedly began to sexually abuse him. Matt Sandusky's biological mother, Debra Long, who still lives not far from the Centre County courthouse, suspected something wasn't right early on in the relationship.

Jerry Sandusky took an interest in her son the same way many of the former coach's other accusers later described. They met at the Second Mile, the charity from which the elder Sandusky culled all of his victims. They attended football games and worked out together. "I would sit back and watch when Jerry would show up, how excited Matt was," Long told ABC News in an interview last November. "And then, as time went on, I would watch the same kid hide behind the bedroom door and say, 'Mom, tell him I'm not home.' "

Matt moved in with the Sanduskys after burning down a barn in 1995. But his trouble seemed to grow worse there, according to his interview with investigators.

He ran away from the couple a year later. At one point, police responded to the house to investigate him for stealing. About four months after moving in, he attempted suicide.

In his interview with investigators over the summer, Matt Sandusky characterized his acting out as a cry for help during a period of sustained abuse.

"It just became very uncomfortable," he said on the recording. "With the showering, with the hugging, with the rubbing, with the - just talking to me. The way he spoke. . . . Anything, any time we were alone."

Dorothy Sandusky offered another explanation for her son's behavior in her letter to Cleland: "He has been diagnosed with bipolar, but he refuses to take his medicine."

Her son's lawyer declined to discuss Wednesday whether Matt Sandusky had been diagnosed with a mental illness.

Whatever the cause, his decision to publicly accuse his father dealt the former coach's defense a devastating blow at trial, his lawyers have said.

Court transcripts of the proceeding reveal an intense back-and-forth in the judge's chambers once Matt Sandusky's cooperation with prosecutors was disclosed.

Jerry Sandusky planned to testify in his own defense. His lawyers feared that prosecutors could call his son as a rebuttal witness. Ultimately, they decided to keep the former coach off the stand. "He always wanted to tell people his side of the allegations," defense lawyer Joseph Amendola is quoted as saying in the transcript. "However, the potential evidence, whether true or not, was so devastating."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter Excerpts
Dorothy Sandusky on July 9 sent a letter to Judge John M. Cleland to give him her view of her husband days after his conviction:

"I have known Jerry for 47 years and he has always been truthful with me, even if it hurt."

"Jerry always put others before himself and always wanted to make each person feel special no matter who they were."

"Jerry was a wonderful father to our six children . . .. Our house was a fun house with lots of games, picnics, laughs, and caring. There were always lots of people around whether it was friends or our kids, Second Mile kids or neighbors."

"I never saw him do anything inappropriate to any child, if I had, as a Mother and Grandmother I would have taken action."

"I use to believe in our protective system, but now have no faith in the police or legal system. To think that they can lie and get by with the lies. The press has been unbelievable. People who have not met us are writing untruths."

"I pray each day that God will give me the strength to do what is right and that I will be able to hold our family together."

Boy Scout "Perversion Files" Set To Be Released
Posted: Oct 18, 2012 10:44 AM CDT
By Maria Hechanova - email

The names of thousands of men suspected of sexually abusing children will be released to the public Thursday.

For years, the Boy Scouts of America have kept these perversion files secret, but after a two year long court battle, they're finally being made public.

The document is about 20,000 pages long. Inside, the names and accounts of men both inside and outside of the organization from 1965 to 1985 that the Boy Scouts believed committed acts of abuse.

Until now, the scouts had argued they did all they could to prevent sex abuse within the organization by keeping these records. The boy scouts have since pledged they will go back into the files and report any offenders who may not have been reported to the police when the alledged abuse took place.

Locally, three years ago, a Lansing man killed himself just days before appearing in court on charges he sexually assaulted a local boy. He'd been a volunteer with the Boy Scouts for 30 years.

Maria Hechnavoa will be working this story today, looking through the document when it's released to see if there's any local ties. She'll have much more tonight on 6 News.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

"Perversion files" show locals helped cover up

NIGEL DUARA

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. - Local Boy Scout leaders, police officials, prosecutors and mayors helped hush up numerous child sex abuse allegations against scoutmasters and other volunteers, according to details in a trove of nearly 15,000 pages of so-called "perversion files" compiled by the Scouts from 1959 to the mid-1980s.

Portland attorney Kelly Clark released the files on Thursday.

The Associated Press obtained copies of the files weeks in advance and conducted an extensive review of them.

The files document allegations of sex abuse by Scouting volunteers across the country. The Scouts have been collecting the documents since the early 1900s, and continue to do so.

At the news conference, Clark blasted the Boy Scouts for their continuing legal battles to try to keep the full trove of files secret.

"You do not keep secrets hidden about dangers to children," said Clark, who in 2010 won a landmark lawsuit against the Boy Scouts on behalf of a plaintiff who was molested by an assistant scoutmaster in the 1980s.

Clark's colleague, Paul Mones, said the files in the Portland case represent "the pain and anguish of thousands of Scouts" who were abused by Scout leaders.

The two attorneys were releasing all 14,500 documents used in the Portland case at their website: kellyclarkattorney.com .

Clark has been in possession of the files since he represented a Portland man who was abused by his assistant scoutmaster in the 1980s. That lawsuit culminated in a jury finding in his client's favor in 2010. It was a landmark case, and the Scouts were ordered to pay $20 million.

Files on 1,200 suspected abusers were used in evidence in that case. The Scouts launched a legal battle to keep the documents confidential, but the Oregon Supreme Court ruled in June they could be released to the public with the redaction of victims' names.

Many of the files released Thursday have been written about before, but this is the first time the earliest ones have been put in the public domain.

The files show that on many occasions the files succeeded in keeping pedophiles out of Scouting leadership positions , the reason they were collected in the first place.

But the files also document some troubling patterns.

For example, a number of alleged pedophiles were able to continue in Scouting because of decisions by local Scout leaders and sometimes pressure from community leaders. In multiple cases, judges, pastors, county attorneys and others intervened to keep the name of Scouting out of the courts or off the front page.
