The word "Clackamas" kept firing in my mind like a bad pop song you can't get rid of the other day, as I had just seen a documentary on animator Bill Plympton and he was talking about
fond memories of the Clackamas River as a youth. I then watched Simpsons "Portland" episode I had downloaded, clicked off the file and then a few minutes later on MSNBC "Shooting Rampage at Clackamas Portland Mall".
I had never heard of that word til then.

These mass shootings by young college kids...the Safeway Giffords, VT Tech, Batman massacre, Omaha mall 2007, and this one. Always strange to read about as the shooters are almost always loners, with no criminal history and no real true motive.

This doesn't deserve its own thread, and certainly doesn't belong anywhere near the Sandy Hook thread, but this happened the day after the Clackamas shooting and is quite brazen. There was a shooting on the 46th Street el station in Philly, about a dozen or so blocks from me. There was an argument about the Bulls-Sixers game on the el, and a kid calmly shoots up a subway car. Warning: this is a very triggering video, as it even affected me.

The subject was the main topic of discussion with my friends yesterday, and I tried to help them to understand that white opinion and privilege tend not to be welcome in conversations about mitigating gun violence in the black community; the overwhelming statistical victims of gun violence in the black community are black and young. I hoped to turn the conversation to public education as I see that in step one towards building a safe and peaceful society, but that only confused them. So then I tried to remind them that, as rich white people, they probably are more susceptible to physical violence from their richer, more powerful white overlords than from black stray bullets.

I try and stay far away these days from the topic of inner city and black youth gun violence, lest I or someone be accused of being "racist"(racist I guess, for wanting to see black people to stop living in fear or young men
and women seeing no hope in a cyclical nature of violence)
