In collaboration with Kai-Marius Pedersen in Tromso, Norway, together we have produced this video clip of the aurora Borealis (Dec 3rd 2012) which comprises 51 minutes of real time auroral activity (compressed into 1 minute 24 seconds), together with audio produced during the same period by converting real time fluctuations of the magnetosphere into ‘solar wind sounds’ using MIDI and music production software.
The sounds are synthetic (the solar wind does not make any audible sound as far as I am aware), but their variation (pitch and volume) is completely driven by the actual fluctuations induced in Earth’s magnetosphere and measured using ground based fluxgate magnetometers based in my garden here in the UK.
