Well, who funds US Media, "The People"? Or Italian media, Berlusconi? RT is funded directly by RIA Novosti, IIRC they share offices or at least are in the same area AFAIK it is government money. I think you'll find such connections in anything that could be classed as MSM. It's silly, really, speaking generally, to not know that and to act like it's an especially unusual thing. I'd like to see "Public Broadcasting", but I don't, that is unless it's something like Dahr Jamail collecting money online to finance a trip. So, buyer beware, and I do note a not very elegant tendency on the part of RT talking heads to change the subject when a guest is too sharply and honestly critical. If it's just Russophobic stuff they will counter. Russia has a lot of corruption and embedded problems. I think it's important to take note of the sweep of Russian history to understand that geographically, geopolitically, and culturally they will never be like the West. It's just different, and to make comparisons without that knowledge misses the peculiar (for us) situation they are in.

Here are some of my non-RT sources, there is plenty variety out there.

The Ivanov Report
Sean's Russia Blog
The Vineyard or the Saker
Russia! Magazine
Siberian Light

Moscow top News
And the very plucky and young Mark Adomanis at True/Slant who is currently only on Twitter His blog -- On Russia
Barents Observer
The Moscow Times
Unpublished Notes
And along more academic lines, Russia: Other Points of View, which has the excellent clear thinking Canadian Patrick Armstrong.
Another young and energetic blogger that you should bookmark is Anatoly Karlin at Sublime Oblivion who is just starting up a series or interviews picking up where Siberian Light has apparently burned out.
Another excellent is source is Sean's Russia blog who does a round up of Russian blogs as well as his own stuff.

Some of these blogs are dedicated to blowing up really horrible Western MSM articles. The Ivanov Report does this with Wapo almost exclusively. Gordon Hahn does this sort of stuff at Russia: Other points of View. These are good places to go if only to hear the other side.

Johnson's Russia List, is unfortunately in financial trouble, so the archives aren't as available as they once were. This guy works his butt off. He asks 50 but will take 25 or probably anything for a years worth of almost daily sends, his work comes in as a newsletter email.

As to the deep politics, let's take Tarpley, he hates Zbig Brother, most of his geopolitical thesis are in line, I think, with Russia's perceptions. He's been on about it forever. I'll grant you though that some of the stuff on RTA is likely gloating or even maybe in the area of "payback" but I really don't actually see it, it's a supposition.

As for if the US and Israel will attack Iran... if you can tell me whether the leadership is sane or not I'll answer.

Nah I don't think they are that sane.

Its more a question of resources tho imo. (As in units that can fight a war.)

Yeah, maybe, but if one looks at Nato's global activities, especially thru Rick Rozoff's eyes, it's like watching a paranoid amphetamine fueled war junkie.

For instance:
The U.S. has gained access to use almost all the military airfields of Turkmenistan, including the airport in Nebit-Dag near the Iranian border, which was reconstructed at American expense.

Ta MinM.

And so much for the attack-Iran theme that was so hot on RT last year (& upthread) - didn't happen.

Really, if i was a floridly corrupt mil-corp-politico cabal with skeletons stacked in closets six deep, i too would fund something very like Russia Today to loudly discuss the hiding of skeletons in pyramids and ufo's.

Hollywood Reporter @THR: Pro-Kremlin News Network Russia Today Attacked by Hackers http://j.mp/ZOf2vR

Hacker group AntiLeaks claimed responsibility for the action, which was timed to coincide with the network's coverage of the Bradley Manning trial.

MOSCOW -- The pro-Kremlin English-language TV station Russia Today suffered a hacking attack on its web site, which coincided with the station’s reporting on the trial of U.S. soldier Bradley Manning and its celebration of becoming “the first international news agency to reach one billion views on YouTube.”

The attack came late on June 3, disrupting the operation of the channel’s web site for five hours. Later, the group AntiLeaks claimed responsibility for the disturbance. Earlier that day, Russia Today reported on the trial of Manning, who is accused of leaking a huge cache of classified U.S. government documents to the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks. AntiLeaks self-identify as a group of hackers who strongly oppose the mission statement and activities of Wikileaks.

The hackers’ attack soured Russia Today’s celebration of hitting the one-billion-viewers mark on YouTube, something that AntiLeaks acknowledged in its tweet saying, “I'm sorry I spoiled your 1 Billion Views' Special Program parading around a bunch of terrorists."

The AntiLeaks group launched a similar DDoS attack -- "distributed denial-of-service attack," the technical name for a hacking attack intended to make a computer service unavailable to its intended users -- during the premiere of The Julian Assange Show on Russia Today a year ago...

RT is pure propaganda. I mean it is basically an organ of the state:

The creation of Russia Today was a part of larger effort by the Kremlin intended to improve the image of Russia abroad.[18] RT was conceived by former media minister Mikhail Lesin,[19] and Vladimir Putin’s press spokesperson Aleksei Gromov.[20] At the time of RT’s founding RIA Novosti director Svetlana Mironyuk stated: "Unfortunately, at the level of mass consciousness in the West, Russia is associated with three words: communism, snow and poverty," and added "We would like to present a more complete picture of life in our country."[19]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29

I'm not a regular watcher but when i do watch it two messages are apparent:

1. The U.S. & U.K. are always on the brink of collapse.
2. Putin recognizes problem X, and is addressing it.

I think people can forget that even under Communism there was some criticism of the government and party leaders.
But it was never a systemic critique of the system. Just that the party recognizes that more needs to be done with such and such
and is working on it. This gives the appearance that the system is regulated, responsive and trying to correct wrongs.
Kind of like here. Bush, Obama, etc really need to fix the economy, healthcare, etc Never the economy is systematically fucked, healthcare is systematically fucked, the two party system is systematically fucked, etc.

But at least CNN wasn't in large part created by the White House and one of Obama's press spokesman. RT is great to get some muckraking about the West but I have never seen anything that is remotely equally self critical. Assange had his own show on RT. Do they have the Russian equivalent of Assange on criticizing Russia? No, because he's probably been liquidated or imprisoned already. Same with Bradley Manning and a host of issues that I am critical about in the U.S. that are great to see on RT. But I'd never forget that this is just the bait RT is putting out to snare activist/progressive westerners into sitting on Uncle Putin's lap.

Basically the real test for RT is in a country where serious journalist are routinely murdered, how many RT journalists have been killed? I'm going to guess zero because for every hard hitting story about the U.S. the stories regarding Russia and their interests are probably all getting signed off first in the Kremlin.

where serious journalist are routinely murdered

you mean Mexico and much of the rest of the Americas below the US border? I can only think of one or two journalist deaths in Russia that people blame on the Russian government.
