It might take more than one try, but here goes:
I'm so sorry that Alice left, RI board.
That certainly wasn't anything I was wishing for or attempting to bring about, ever. In fact, I was horrified and flabbergasted to see it happen. I mean, that was a bad fight, but everything I've ever said, either on THAT THREAD or elsewhere, about respecting, admiring, appreciating, loving and rooting for Alice is, was, and has always been true. So....Hm. So I'm-not-sure-what-because-I-don't-want-to-cause-more-strife. Basically.
This is kind of an inherently awkward undertaking, I guess. Apologies are usually largely about taking responsibility. But Alice just was/is so very manifestly a woman of principle, no weakling, and her own person that it seems like it would be more of a gross, ludicrous insult than it would an apology if I said I was sorry she left in any way that suggested I thought I actually mattered enough to her to have had anything to do with it.
...
Oh, well. FWIW, I'm sorry she left and regret having contributed to her departure, if I did, however I did. And I mean: truly and seriously and profoundly regret it. One of the reasons that I asked for my account to be shuttered about .05 seconds after typing "That's it. Bye." and pressing submit was to leave the field to her, since it seemed pretty clear that neither of us was capable of backing down on a matter of true conviction. I thought she deserved it. She contributed a lot more to the board than I did. I hope she comes back.

Also: I'm sorry I called her a bitch and suggested she was a dilettante. Neither was at all merited.
_______________
That not really adequate, I know. But at least it's something. If it helps at all, there are a few people -- including Alice and probably everyone else to whom it matters most -- that I actually hope never forgive me, since they'd be lesser people if they did. But since I'm (a) pretty sure I don't need to ask them not to; and (b) sorry anyway, that's about it.
