Group Minds

Postby marykmusic » Wed Feb 15, 2006 8:32 pm

How important is it to have a group such as this, to discuss and brainstorm, spread information and learn together?

I discovered there's a name for it:

An egregore is a kind of group mind which is created when people consciously come together for a common purpose. Whenever people gather together to do something and egregore is formed, but unless an attempt is made to maintain it deliberately it will dissipate rather quickly. However
if the people wish to maintain it and know the techniques of how to do so, the egregore will continue to grow in strength and can last for centuries.

An egregore has the characteristic of having an effectiveness greater than the mere sum of its individual members. It continuously interacts with its members, influencing them and being influenced by them. The interaction works positively by stimulating and assisting its members but only as long as they behave and act in line with its original aim. It will stimulate both individually and collectively all those faculties in the group which will permit the realization of the objectives of its original program. If this process is continued a long time the egregore will take on a kind of life of its own, and can become so strong that even if all its members should die, it would continue to exist on the inner dimensions and can be contacted even centuries later by a group of people prepared to live the lives of the original founders, particularly if they are willing to provide the initial input of energy to get it going again.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egregore

I have been involved in varous online groups since I got my first computer, August of 2002, as both participant and moderator. Not as long as many people here, but long enough to have seen a pattern of rising and falling in some, groups that somehow challenged The Powers That Be. It doesn't happen often in more benign subject matter, unless there's simply a battle of egos. But those groups which are meant to break out of the hive mind, create new paradigm in thought and deed, those are infiltrated with their disruption, destruction, and dissolution as the aim.

This group definately falls into that "dangerous to TPTB" category. If not, I wouldn't be here. There's so much good writing and eye-opening information that I'm able to pass on to my other groups, which I appreciate. Other folks do the same thing, I'm sure. I find it stimulating and energizing, associating with such a broad range of viewpoints and experiences...

As the quote above suggests, this is some powerful stuff going on here. It's worth protecting and maintaining, as a source of mutual awareness and growth.

Thanks, everyone, especially Jeff. --MaryK

Why would ANY person of their own "nature-given" freewill, WANT to agree to "live the lives of the original founders" of ANYTHING!!! I foolishly thought we were supposed to live OUR OWN lives to the appbrobation and approval of "Whatever We Believe LIVES Behind the Curtains of Mortality". If I were to believe ANY of the posters here (not you maryk & dragon) who "preach" that there is absolutely NOTHING behind the Curtains, then why would I not just get a weapon, go out and take out as many of the "bad guys" as I can before they end my Miserable, Meaningless, Unrewarded LIFE in a hail of bullets??? (Miserable, Meaningless, and Unrewarded ONLY if I believed that NOTHING is behind the Curtain.)

That's the thing I can't understand about atheism at ALL!! "We're going to live on in the memories of our children & grandchildren." BULLSHIT!!! I, as ALL of us here on planet Earth, had four, and only four Grandparents. It's genetically, scientifically IMPOSSIBLE to be here otherwise. I never met Three of the Infamous Four, as they were physically DEAD before I was born. I lovingly remember my paternal grandmother because she lived with us until her death at ninety two when I was eight. Sometimes, I THINK about one of the two of my paternal great-grandfathers, Alexander, because I was named for him; but RARELY! You call this living on?

I DO, however, also believe that Jeff's blog here is dangerous to the PTB. If my small contributions (i.e., telling the Alphabet-Soup Agencies that I KNOW they're watching, and that "I DON'T GIVE A FISTFULL OF BIRDSHOT, ACCIDENTLY PLACED INTO THE FACE AND HEART OF SOMEONE THAT I HAD THE UNMITIGATED 'GALL' TO CALL A 'FRIEND' about what "Monkey Boy" and his Futt-Bucking Boy-Toys THINK), 'n' then I think I'm "jist doin' mah job, lady". So you and I, maryk, will put away our differences on religion, and do our BEST "ta kick some New Wurld Ordah ASS!!! P.S. Thanx for outin' thet thar agen'-boy. Great word egregore, Mary, thanks, and for the community reminder. Wish i had more to contribute, but am a novice at alot of this stuff.

-

Floyd, why is the status of your memory the sole criteria on which to 'choose' a world view? I expect to be forgotten by other humans fairly quickly, but hopefully the effects of my well intentioned works will persist and aid all that lives long after i'm gone. Thats easily enough for me.

It's About ALL Of Us....

Postby Floyd Smoots » Wed Feb 15, 2006 10:27 pm

....wintler, dear human, I fear that you missed my point entirely. I, personally, don't "give a fig" (if you'll pardon a very, very ancient euphemism for "you know what") WHAT ANYONE thinks of me, or ABOUT me, after I've shuffled "off this mortal coil". If I subscribed to the atheistic view that when one mortally dies, the tape stops, the TV is turned off, and, from the dead person's point of view, there is pure, unadulterated non-existence, then, I, too, would feel as you seem to do. I've often thought that the Universe might be a better place were it that way.

That said, Because of my personal view of "Life, the Universe, and Everything", I believe we (our ACTUAL personnas, all that makes us "who we, and we only, are") WILL be held accountable by a higher power that I believe created us for "ITS" personal and, sometimes unfathomable, purposes.

To give you, and yours the benefit of the doubt, If I'm wrong, No Harm, No Foul, Whatsoever to Me because loving, caring, sharing, peacemaking, etc., hurts NO ONE at all!! However, if I, or my Jewish, or Muslim ilk are right, then, those who picked "Door Number Two" just might be in for a very nasty Surprise if they learn, on The Other Side of the Curtain, that they were wrong.

And as my boy, Forrest Gump says, "And that's all I have to say about that".

Peace or War,
Shotgunner Floyd

FS: "why did you pick out the most irrelevant part of it to dicsuss"

I thought it relevant, because fear of judgement/memorial can slant peoples behaviour in groups, i.e. theres a focus on popularity and/or notoriety.

The other text that you reproduced seemed to be addressed to Mary, and did little for me anyway. I'd already said 'yay team' once, to do so again would contravene aussie ettiquette.
