..there's a couple of facts about Mirin Dajo's life, and piercing, that should be told.

First of all, he died at an early age (34) of an infection that he recieved from one of his piercing sessions, so his "healing abilities" were not absolute.
When they did an autopsy, they found numerous scars on his heart and other vital organs, so he was damaging his internal organs every time he performed.

Secondly, as someone who has seen hundreds of piercings performed, I can tell you that many skin piercings don't bleed, especially while the metal is inside the skin.
This is generally due to the small size of the needle inserted.
Essentially, had he inserted a broad bladed broadswoard into his abdomen instead of a thin rapier foil, he would have bled out and died.

Doctors often don't immediately remove the blade from a stabbing victim.
While pierced, there won't be much bleeding at all, but remove the blade quickly and the person may bleed to death.

I saw this first hand , after a friend of mine was stabbed in the chest and said that he had no pain and had only a small trickle of blood from the wound.
At the emergency room, the doctor informed him that if he had removed the knife from the wound, he might have easily bled to death.

All that being said....what is amazing is these people's ability to up their body's leukocytes.
Dajo's autopsy showed that he had a highly elevated white cell count, which helped heal him quickly and fought off infection.

If one could pinpoint how it was done i.e. be it diet, a genetic abnoramlity or an altered state of conciousness, then we could be onto one of the greatest breakthroughs in human history.
