Just been reading about this interesting character ;

A Dutchman named Mirin Dajo was legally banned as a performer after an assistant ran a fencing foil straight through his body - a member of the audience suffered a heart attack! ohmy.gif Dajo volunteered for tests at a Zurich hospital where medical experts watched in horror as a foil was run completely through his body -without injury or bleeding. The doctors then asked if they could x-ray him with the foil still in his body. He agreed, and after the x-rays they felt so comfortable with this miracle that they took turns repeatedly impaling Dajo - themselves

"What I try to make clear - is a knowledge from time immemorial - but generally announced in secret only," emphasizes Mirin Dajo. Sensational photos and films presumed lost reveal the tragic secret of the "Inviolable Man". What a bizarre story! I have a tough time picturing a bunch of MD's taking turns with the impalings tho, seeing how they usually have to have made hippocratic oaths or whatever. But still... wow.

Apparently Dajo demonstrated this in 1947 in Geneva. I wonder what Dajo experienced during the war, and whether it enhanced his abilities.

For instance, Jack Schwartz was a "Nazi concentration camp survivor - who for years had to train himself to endure severe torture and pain. After the war, he repeatedly astonished dozens of physicians by sticking mammoth six-inch sail-maker's needles through his arms without injury or bleeding, another amazing example of the powers of human consciousness."

Another link, with similar examples:

Below, Jack Schwartz painlessly- smiling- thrusts a large darning needle through his biceps repeatedly on request for the lab researchers. He was able to stop and start bleeding at will, control his heart rate (stop his pulse), hold lit cigarettes to his arm with no pain, or permanent skin damage. The cigarrette burns ranged from simple red marks to blisters on different occassions. With 72 hours all trace of burns dissappeared. Although he had been doing these kinds of demonstrations for years, the reserachers remarked that "The skin on Jack's arm is as smooth as a baby's." All of his puncture "wounds" closed immediately, and were completely healed and completely invisible between 24 and 48 hours. He further had a ritual of rubbing the needle around on the dirty floor with his shoe before demonstratin

Edited by: Rigorous Intuition at: 5/18/06 6:02 pm

This is remniscent of the miracles reported at the St. Medard cemetery in Paris, in the 1730s. www.homepages.ucl.ac.uk/~...nvulsn.htm has a translated account of some of the testimonies and related documents. There's reams of data about this in French, but it's been by and large overlooked in the Anglophone world.

Unfortunately, the picture of St. Medard is muddied by politics. The church was a stronghold of Jansenism (a sort of French puritanism) and the Jansenists were strongly opposed to Louis XIV, finding him immoral. While there's little doubt that the Jansenists sought to play up reports of miracles and use them for political advantage, I think there's enough evidence that something remarkable happened in that graveyard for several months.

The accounts in the link I gave unfortunately concentrate on miracle cures. There were, however, a number of reports filed by skeptics who visited the graveyard in the early days of the phenomenon (before it became anti-royalist) and reported instances of people (women, mostly) who could not be harmed by blades, fire or beatings, and who encouraged others to try to do so, as a sign of their faith. I've got a translation somewhere - I'll see if I can't dig it out.

-Sepka the Space Weasel

Edit: Also Eliphas Levi, in his treatise on transcendental magic addresses the question of becoming invulnerable to steel. www.rahoorkhuit.net/libra...part_2.pdf
and touches briefly upon St. Medard in the process. The Conjuration of th Four is probably the most relevant section to this discussion.

Edited by: Sepka at: 5/19/06 4:06 am

Not to rain on any parades, but......

Postby johnny nemo » Fri May 19, 2006 12:44 pm

..there's a couple of facts about Mirin Dajo's life, and piercing, that should be told.

First of all, he died at an early age (34) of an infection that he recieved from one of his piercing sessions, so his "healing abilities" were not absolute.
When they did an autopsy, they found numerous scars on his heart and other vital organs, so he was damaging his internal organs every time he performed.

Secondly, as someone who has seen hundreds of piercings performed, I can tell you that many skin piercings don't bleed, especially while the metal is inside the skin.
This is generally due to the small size of the needle inserted.
Essentially, had he inserted a broad bladed broadswoard into his abdomen instead of a thin rapier foil, he would have bled out and died.

Doctors often don't immediately remove the blade from a stabbing victim.
While pierced, there won't be much bleeding at all, but remove the blade quickly and the person may bleed to death.

I saw this first hand , after a friend of mine was stabbed in the chest and said that he had no pain and had only a small trickle of blood from the wound.
At the emergency room, the doctor informed him that if he had removed the knife from the wound, he might have easily bled to death.

All that being said....what is amazing is these people's ability to up their body's leukocytes.
Dajo's autopsy showed that he had a highly elevated white cell count, which helped heal him quickly and fought off infection.

If one could pinpoint how it was done i.e. be it diet, a genetic abnoramlity or an altered state of conciousness, then we could be onto one of the greatest breakthroughs in human history.
