if anyone wonders what this place should be like......go back and read some of his old stuff

yes, his work was extraordinary but it did go off the boil at the end, which could indicate burnout and that I can understand.
Amazing, well written and researched essays on fascinating subjects, and in quick succession. some were as mind boggling as 911 was to me when I first clicked on the basic truth of it.
Or... could there have been threats,, some of the subject matter was pretty heavy.
Idle speculation but I wonder if others have had the same thoughts....

Noisy abusive bullies have ruined many otherwise excellent Internet boards.

If Jack keeps his promise and stays away, maybe this place could avoid such a fate.

But there are others who seem to simply enjoy being dicks and starting fights. They don't bully as much as Jack does; perhaps they have lives away from their keyboards.

Seems like it's another in a long list of human nature being bad for the human race. A bunch of relatively like-minded people can't even figure out how to get along on an Internet message board. The male egos always get in the way, male egos being such that they always have to bully, to ridicule, to "be right", to dominate.

I find myself guilty of it sometimes myself, usually when provoked. if I see someone being a bully I go pretty ballistic because I was on the receiving end of some pretty vicious bullying as a kid.

How we can live up to Martin Luther King's ideal is beyond me. Love instead of violence. I don't see humans capable of that. Just not in our DNA.

yes, you are guilty of it sometimes, aren't we all? just a few graphs up there you imply someone "has no life away from the keyboard" when you know that couldn't be true. Victims of bullying know how to do it, they've had no choice but to learn, and can often end up doing it more or less unconsciously. There's a fine line sometimes between bustinbawls and bullying. If you're not personally hurt by something, best to just let it pass. If you are, please say something.

In my experience with bullies, where I grew 7 inches in one year and discovered that once I had a fighting chance the bullying either stopped completely or was done when my back was turned (I.e. my locker vandalized and my stuff stolen), it was clear that bullies only respond to real or implied force. Which can lead one to bully the bullies. Which, if done righteously, should be a valid approach, however it comes down to a "might makes right" kind of situation which is morally shaky.

But it also brings up a subject I want to write a post about soon, the "Spiral of Silence"

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_of_silence

If nobody speaks up, everybody assumes what's going on is ok. Silence implies the behavior is condoned by the group. Somebody has to be the first to call out the bullying.

The Spiral of Silence is used by the media to tell us how we feel, so we won't act. It's a very insidious form of social manipulation.

ha, ha,

you can check out any time you want but you can never leave RI, it spirals in and out of this killing joke,

analysis and discussion of insanity and bastardry fuelled by irrepressible passion and soul destroying conviction (plus a few fucking leaches and trolls to let us know we are on the right track)

people are right to have breakdowns

Wombat will be OK, he's an evolving dude who has a lot more going on than RI,

i for one hope he just takes a few breaths of fresh air and continues, same as he ever was, cos he's one of the best around here
the question is why, who, why, what, why, when, why and why again?

.....the passive agressive total indifference / ignoring is just as likely to put you off a board I would posit......I know one excellent contributor for whom that was the case .....at least a bully is actually paying some attention to you....there's a handy mouse and a computer off switch...bullying in RL has no such convenient avoidance facility so are the harms really comparable ?

I've been in this situation before, but I've got around it. First you have to work out whether the other person is genuinely disinterested or is deliberately ignoring you.

If the latter is the case, then there is a quality of cyberspace you can use that isn't there in the real world, ie you can't be physically squeezed out, your text and opinions take up the same space as anyone else's, and are as visible as anyone else's. In other words, I keep addressing them on their own issues, asking questions and being farily polite.
If they continue to ignore (on their own issues), then their silence becomes a sort of response, and they are giving you the floor. It takes a very hard headed individual resist re-entering dialogue after this.

...I was thinking more on a collective level of apparent general indifference or meh.....I notice this place only gets energised when
(a) there's some verbal punch-up everyone can pile onto ( followed by 30 page meta-threads...we love meta-threads where we can analyse our fascinating selves endlessly and hurl accusations of assholery hither and yon ) or ( b ) a mass-shooting somewhere.......which shortly proceeds to (a) anyway.....( on account of all those bereaved relatives being from central-casting etc etc )

(a) sounds very familiar to me, you start to see these patterns when you go on several forums. There seems to be a notion that RI is significantly different to other forums. this may be so on a good day, but people forget that humans are not that far removed from big-brained fire monkeys (if at all), and once the poo-slinging starts, we all start to look remarkably similar.

The above is what I was referring to as needing intelligent catharsis, it seems you are also not taken in by the apparent ceasing of hostilities ATM.

Semper Occultus, as a longtime mostly lurker, and just for the record, I have always appreciated your posts. I also always enjoyed Ahabs other leg's post who sadly doesn't seem to vist here anymore. Wombaticus Rex also a good guy off course. What are breadstick munchers?

...ah well that's uncommonly decent of you 0-0.....much obliged ..... :tiphat:

but darn it - made me look like I was angling for compliments there......( but I’ll accept it anyway & stow it in the locker )

it was actually Plutonia I was thinking of although I may very well have just pissed her off by making false representations on her behalf......Ahab another one ofcourse - he was off on his Scottish independence lark ofcourse.....I really thought that "like" button proposal was a way to bridge the inactivity gap but that went down like Jackie Mason at a Waffen SS re-union....

Wombat must be absolutely clutching himself in delight over the disturbances in the Force eventuating from his dainty pirouette off stage left...at least 4 threads launched at the last count.....

I'm amazed at all of the curiousity and sheer brain power that is present here. Even though a lot of it simply goes right over my slippery head, I still feel like I'm part of something fundamentally "meaningful".

Thanks to all of you for helping a brother out (over and over).
