One more point. ‘Violence’ versus ‘non-violence’ is no longer the question. The massed fire-power of even local police departments today has rendered any thought of Che Guevara-type armed insurrection obsolete because suicidal. Indeed, the Black Panthers already warned against left-wing ‘Custerism.’ This simple recognition of fact does not mean that we necessarily submit meekly to arrest in ritualized non-violent civil disobedience, although the Ghandian tactic of ‘filling the jails’ may at one point prove productive.

What it does mean is that we must eschew ritualized small-group violence, however satisfying to our enraged individuality, in favor of tactics that have the potential of effectively bringing together the maximum force of numbers of ordinary people in ways that will paralyze the forces of repression and induce even more ‘civilians’ – normal working people -- to join the struggle. As the poet Shelley put it, “We are many; they are few.” Simply by uniting to withdraw our labor-power through massive non-cooperation, we the 99% can bring the whole world economy to a grinding halt, and there isn’t fuckall their spies nor police-dogs can do to make it go...

Hunting Australia’s neo-Nazis

Amid death threats and bungled attempts to out him, one man refuses to let go of his perilous mission.

Two weeks ago, the boneheads thought they’d got their man. For a decade, the pseudonym “Andy Fleming” has been troubling Australia’s far right and neo-Nazis – “boneheads” to their opponents –by writing about them. His blog Slack Bastard carries the work of a man who has acquired enormous amounts of intelligence, so much so that it rivals police knowledge. An anarchist, Andy has been exposing, mocking, infiltrating and organising against neo-Nazi groups, and in turn the neo-Nazi skinheads have been trying to expose his identity. So far they have been unsuccessful.

On March 19 the website of the Australia First Party – the far-right political group based in a shop in Sydney’s Tempe – published the photo, home address and mobile phone number of a man they believed to be Andy Fleming. But it wasn’t him. “The morons got it wrong again,” says Fleming. Within 24 hours, the incorrectly identified man had received two threatening phone calls and seven text messages. Police had contacted the man before the messages started. They monitor this subterranean world, and called to warn he was about to be dragged into it.

“I was scared originally, but now I’m just angry,” the man tells me. “If they really meant harm, I don’t think they’d advertise it. I also think what they’ve published could be libellous.”

The threats all came from the same person. One text read: “Hey you left wing anti white bleeding heart race traitor fukn do gooder asswipe ethnic loving piece of shit ur days are coming to a end asswipe!!! Every one on storm front knows ur true name and identity u piece of shit!! Lmfao watch ur back dog!! :-D.”

At 5.57am on Friday, March 20, the aggressor rang, called the misidentified man a “coward”, and hung up.

The accidental activist

It happened by accident. Fleming loved punk, hated Nazis, and began researching the obscure relationship between the two. He had a show on a community radio station, where he began singling out fascist bands that had insinuated themselves into local punk and metal scenes. Fleming says it’s not as easy to spot as you’d think – they don’t always display swastika tattoos or Nazi armbands and their lyrics aren’t always explicit, although sometimes they are: “Repatriate, ship ’em out, send the bastards back/ If they don’t fucking like it, it’ll be in bodybags.” In the world of hardcore punk, fascist skinheads can look similar to straightedge ones, while doom-heavy metal lyrics about carnage and honour are par for the course.

So Fleming joined the dots. He studied their lyrics, their personnel, their record labels and album sleeves. He assumed Nazi identities and embedded himself in internet chat rooms. He studied neo-Nazi music festivals – who played, who attended. The largest white power music event is the Ian Stuart Donaldson Memorial Concert, which is basically Woodstock for Nazis. Donaldson was a British skinhead, founder and lead singer of white power group Skrewdriver. When he died in a car crash 21 years ago, he became an instant martyr. Each year in Melbourne, a memorial concert is held – Fleming would find out who was playing and who was going.

Fleming began broadcasting this information. The problem was, the radio station was now receiving threats. Fleming’s show was pre-recorded, meaning it was played while another DJ was behind the desk. Should the neo-Nazis arrive, they’d incorrectly assume the radio announcer was Fleming. Management cut a deal with Andy: he could keep doing the show so long as he was in the studio when it aired. Fleming agreed, but put out a call to his “antifa” (anti-fascist) colleagues in the anarchist party. The first time he managed to wrangle almost 100 to stand outside the studio, but “I could never keep those numbers up each week”. Fleming kept doing it until the threats from boneheads increased and the radio station lost its nerve. The show ended, but Fleming moved online and blogged about it. As of last month, the blog has had 1.25 million visits and twice that number in page views.

'You have to be careful'

For years now, white supremacists have been trying to uncover his identity. To thwart them, Fleming uses an IP address that gives his location as Europe. Regardless, he’s happy to engage his aggressors on the blog’s comments section. Fleming responds to threats and accusations of race treachery with wry mockery – recasting the boneheads’ heroic crusade as rank silliness. Among the detailed and sober surveys of white supremacist groups are irreverent pop-culture gibes – YouTube videos of disco songs and Simpsons references. Fleming is earnest about what he does, he just believes the way to fight them is to not take them too seriously.

Fleming’s campaign is varied. Part of it is using the threat of exposure against skinheads, something he’s wary of doing. “You have to be careful. Many don’t want to be revealed – they have jobs, families. To expose them is escalation. But for those who aren’t ideologically convinced, you can work on them. And then you want them to offer their disavowal publicly. On record, because then there’s no going back.”

Fleming uses assumed identities to ingratiate himself in private forums online – the largest is Stormfront – and gathers intelligence. In 2011, Fleming discovered a ham-fisted plot to disrupt a gig at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, Melbourne by Canadian anarcho-punks – and avowed anti-fascists – Propagandhi. In the end, only 15 boneheads turned up after Fleming passed on their intentions to the venue, before going to the gig himself. Vastly outnumbered, the skinheads went home before the gig finished.

Through similar forums, Fleming learnt of a skinhead barbecue being organised in a park, so a professional photographer was hired to shoot them with a zoom lens. “Another time, someone had physically infiltrated the Hammerskins group. Became a partial member. This person called me, saying they’d done this and that they had information that might be of use. He never told me who he was, so I asked him a few questions to establish his credibility. He got them right – he knew the inside of this group. He gave me some really useful information, and then that was it. Never heard from him again. I don’t know if he was from a Jewish group, or police, or what.”

Andy provided me with some of their correspondence. The unknown agent wrote: “I was undercover for four years as a bone. My job was to get as much information as possible and relay it to my boss. I’ve never met a bigger pack of fuckwits. I can’t tell you who I work for, I can only say that my job was to be one of them. I’m not a spook and your blog gets a lot more views than you think.”

Veneer of legitimacy

Fleming’s not the only one in this arcane business. Anti-racist organisation All Together Now runs a program called EXIT: White Power, which has received government funding. It’s adopted a model used in parts of Europe that it stresses is evidence-based. Members will join online forums such as Stormfront and diplomatically offer counter-arguments to the skinheads’ thesis. Broadly, the thesis has it that the white race is being existentially diminished – economically, culturally and genetically – by multiculturalism. In effect, a stealth program of genocide against whites is being waged. White supremacy, goes the argument, is not anti-black but pro-white, merely an activist group determined to balance a constellation of black advocacy groups.

This veneer of legitimacy is devastated by the catherine-wheel of race hate and paranoia expressed on the forums. As a ratio, there’s much less discussion about what “white” means, and far more about the malevolence of the “muds”. Among other things – for this is a complex medley of pathologies – is an ahistorical hysteria that Australia is about to fall into a social abyss. It shares something with the broader, mainstream pessimism about Australia’s direction, which runs stubbornly contrary to this country’s staggering economic and cultural development in the past quarter century. For many, we are always on the cusp of disaster, shuffling towards some dreaded immolation. Given the awesome signs that suggest otherwise, one can only ponder the bitter pleasure that comes from being Chicken Little.

EXIT attempts to patiently test these assumptions on the forums, while trained counsellors will meet members who are wavering in their commitment. The director of the program – who did not wish to be named – told me: “Many leave because of the weight of hypocrisy. The hardcore groups preach purity – don’t do drugs, don’t abuse alcohol, don’t beat your women. But then they see them go and do these things. If they weren’t ideologically sure in the first place, this hypocrisy will sometimes be enough for them to leave.” The director is right about the hypocrisy – drug charges abound among these groups.

Fleming doesn’t know that much about EXIT’s work, and doesn’t seem to care to. Despite the similarity of their work and its shared obscurity, EXIT is establishment and he is an anarchist. “They’re not approaching this with radical politics,” he tells me. The director of EXIT was reluctant to criticise Fleming, but seemed suspicious of freelancers – unaided by academic literature on interventions – prodding the viper’s nest.

At his suggestion, I meet Fleming at the Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy. The significance of the venue hits me as I’m a few blocks away. In the late noughties, under the management of Gary Wayne Kitto, the “Birmy” was neo-Nazi friendly. Hatecore groups played regularly, and once Kitto invited American musician and Ku Klux Klan sympathiser Johnny Rebel there to play a few of his songs, which include “In Coon Town” and “Move Them Niggers North”. Community groups organised pickets and boycotts. In 2008, Kitto sold the place – it’s unsure whether it was a result of the campaign. Eager to distance themselves, the new management printed posters declaring: “The Birmingham Hotel: It’s not shit anymore!”

It wasn’t the first time Nazism had touched the pubs of Melbourne’s inner north. In 1990, bonehead Dane Sweetman went to a house party on Hitler’s birthday. A suburban affair, with like-minded people. It soured when David Noble riffed lecherously on Sweetman’s girlfriend, and Dane secured his pride by planting an axe in Noble’s head. He then stabbed him multiple times, ensuring his death and, presumably, the honour of his girlfriend.

In 2005, Sweetman was released from jail. He made the Tote, in Collingwood, his local. He would sit at the bar and drink, while his young lackeys orbited his infamy. Sweetman was hard to miss – like Charlie Manson he had a swastika tattooed on his forehead. Things boiled over when a punter asked Sweetman about it, and was headbutted.

The Tote and Sweetman were a striking combination, and his presence posed a singular problem for the owner Bruce Milne. The Tote was, before its closure in 2010 (it has since reopened under new management), the scuzzy ground zero of Melbourne’s musical bohemia. The place is – or was – a picaresque icon, a beacon for metal, punk and gentler genres. Milne himself is a widely respected promoter, and founded Au Go Go Records in 1979.

Milne ran the place with a laissez-faire philosophy – all were welcome, and censorship was anathema. But neo-Nazi axe-murderers? After the assault, an alliance was formed between the Tote, police and community anti-racism groups. A policy on Nazi symbols was being demanded. Initially, Milne hesitated. “If you ban them, you ban Sex Pistols on the jukebox,” he tells me. Milne isn’t racist – he is a libertarian. As it was, police asked Sweetman not to return and management endorsed an anti-Nazi symbol policy.

In the shadows

There aren’t so many neo-Nazis haunting Australia. EXIT puts the number at 200. Victoria Police has a similar estimation, and paints a picture of sclerotic inter- and intra-tribal disputes. There’s no movement; that would suggest momentum. Rather it’s a tiny subterranean amoeba, incoherent and racked by as much suspicion and animosity of each other as of the “enemy”.

According to police, there are two distinct movements in Victoria’s radical right wing. There are “white pride” and “Aussie pride” groups. White pride groups take their cues from Hitler and are obsessed with Jews; Aussie pride groups are more bent on Asian, Middle Eastern and African immigration. This separation is a weakness, but is only one of many differences. Police fix the Cronulla riots as the latter’s most infamous expression.

The largest white supremacy group in Victoria is the Southern Cross Hammerskins, formed in 1993 by Scott McGuiness. They have chapters in other states also, and are local splinters of what is an international group. Wade Michael Page – who in 2012 stormed a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and shot seven people dead – was a Hammerskin and sang for hatecore group End Apathy.

Perhaps incongruously, police say the Hammerskins take their name from Pink Floyd’s animated film The Wall, which featured goose-stepping claw hammers. The SC Hammerskins have a formal membership structure, much like bikies, and full members display insignia. There is also Crew 38, which serves as a support club for unpatched recruits or for people who can’t become full members because of work or family. Members of both groups are required to practise the hallowed “14 words” of white supremacy – “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” – and live a “good, clean lifestyle”. They rarely do.

The Hammerskin elders are beefy and tattooed with cobwebs, death’s heads and SS bolts. Sometimes they glare at the camera with self-conscious intensity; most often with an unctuous smirk. There are young acolytes, the ones with something to prove, and they’re much smaller and scrawnier. One day, if maturity doesn’t intervene, they will be like their fraternal papas.

They take proud group shots in suburban backyards filled with plastic furniture, brick paving and dogs. At music gigs, you’ll often find them topless – their chests, backs and bellies emblazoned with ink. There will be few women around, and security will stand, arms folded, in front of the stage facing the crowd. While one elder is a teetotal Christian, booze features in most photos they take of each other.

The Victorian Hammerskins’ leader is known to police, Fleming and antifa activists, but he has never been publicly named. He is a hatecore band member and music promoter, and runs a small graphic design firm that creates album covers and band posters. He is also a father.

According to EXIT counsellors, the psychological profile of neo-Nazis is similar to that of bikies – they were once lonely, marginalised or victimised people who have sought the comfort and definition of a fraternity. For many, the transformation from social invisibility to figures of intimidation is thrilling. Bikies like to consider themselves the last free men in society, but many remain hopelessly chained to their pasts. Neo-Nazis proclaim a clear-eyed intellectual superiority – they alone can see what’s coming – but are just as shackled to their histories. It’s also tempting to view the neo-Nazis – and their militantly opposed anarchist rivals, such as Andy Fleming – as similar people: fierce but broken, engaged in a symbiotic struggle on the fringes.

'That guy's anti-white'

The man incorrectly identified last month as Andy Fleming, and menaced by phone, recorded the number of the person calling to threaten him. He gave it to me and the following day I rang it. Not surprisingly, there was no answer. An hour later, I tried again.

“Hello, this is Glen.”

I was astonished he’d answered; more astonished he’d provided his name. I stated who I was and where I worked. “Glen, I understand that this phone number has been used to harass a man you mistakenly believe to be Andy Fleming.”

There was a long pause.

“Hello?”

“Yeah, what do you want?”

“Glen, are you a member of the Australia First Party?”

“Maybe, maybe not,” he sneered.

“I believe you’ve been harassing a man, and you in fact have his identity wrong.”

“What’s this about?”

“The blog that uncovers neo-Nazis.”

He laughed bitterly. “That guy’s anti-white. And there’s no Nazis in Australia. Get your fucking facts straight, mate. If you mean right-wing people who care about their culture and don’t want blacks turning it into a Third World shithole, then yeah.”

He hung up.

Days later, the identities of two other men believed to Fleming – both incorrect – were published on Stormfront and related websites. It seemed that they had implicitly accepted they were wrong in the first instance, and were now trying a buckshot approach.

Having it both ways

In 2012, Maurice Girotto became the only Australia First candidate elected to government in Australia when he successfully stood for Penrith council in Sydney’s west. A little over a year later, on Halloween 2013, Girotto resigned from the party, continuing as an independent councillor. He had fallen out with the party’s leader, Jim Saleam, a stalwart of racial politics who has been jailed for his part in a shotgun attack on a member of the African National Congress. He had this to say to his constituents: “I will broadly retain the Australia First Party platform … I remain the same man, with the same beliefs.”

I called Girotto, who works as a mechanic, for comment about the “outing” of Andy Fleming. I found him at work and as we spoke he intermittently gave instructions to colleagues. I asked him if knew about – and supported – the erroneous publication of Fleming’s details. “I have no idea about that, mate. None. I’ve resigned from the Australia First Party.”

“What do you think of what your old party has done?”

“I’m not responsible for other people’s actions. I want to make that clear.”

He had made that clear. In other words, he had quit the party that got him to office to escape the damage that comes when party colleagues practise vigilantism in the name of racial purity. He had, of course, been careful to signal to voters that his views hadn’t changed. He was having it both ways. I put this to him.

“No. I’ve left the party. Do I believe in this country? Yes. But I am not supportive of Jim Saleam and I want to distance myself as much as possible.”

“Why didn’t you say this in your media release?”

He paused. “Well, how do you do a media release?”

Maintaining the rage

For now, Fleming’s identity remains safe. He has no intention of halting his strange and shaggy work against the boneheads in the shadows. “Some of them I feel sorry for,” he says. “Imagine being in their head?”

Not unexpectedly, my writing on the subject of the far right has generated a good deal of hatred and resentment from that quarter. In his article, Martin quotes a text received by the person the Australia First Party recently alleged authors my blog, the fallout from which forms an important part of his story:

This is a fairly typical example of the abuse I’ve received. In October last year I surveyed other such criticism, usually taking the form of anonymous commentary on my blog: I republish it below.

For a period of time I generally allowed publication of such comments, if only to demonstrate to other, less-psychopathic and more skeptical critics, that there did indeed exist such a ‘nazi’ milieu: — one characterised by a morass of anger, hatred, resentment and paranoia over race, sexuality and politics. Now, however — unless they happen to be especially amusing in their vituperations — I tend to simply bin such comments, as after a while they become simply boring, and if a reader needed further convincing that the intarwebs has provided crazed bigots an opportunity to express their views, my efforts are obviously insufficient.

Ethel MacDonald

A native of North Lanarkshire, Ethel MacDonald, the fifth of nine children, left home at sixteen, joined the Independent Labour Party (ILP) and worked at various jobs. In 1925 she met Guy Aldred and, with him, became politically active in the Anti-Parliamentary Communist Federation (APCF). In 1933 she accepted his invitation to work as his secretary, and joined him in the June 1934 formation of the United Socialist Movement (USM) an anarchist-communist organization based in Glasgow.

Spanish Civil War

In November 1936 MacDonald traveled to Barcelona with Guy Aldred’s partner, Jenny Patrick, to represent and show the support of the Scottish anarchist movement for the Republican (Loyalist) side in the Spanish Civil War. In January 1937 she began to transmit regular English-language reports on the war on Barcelona’s widely heard Anarchist radio station run by the Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) [National Workers Confederation]. In the crackdown following the events of May 1937 she assisted the escape of anarchists wanted by the Communist secret police and smuggled into prison letters and food for fellow anarchists held by regional authorities. Through her activities in helping anarchists escape Spain, she became renowned in the British press as the “Scots Scarlet Pimpernel”. Between July and November 1937, she was a national figure in the newspapers, with daily reports and inquiries as to her whereabouts and activities. Eventually she herself was arrested by a faction of the Loyalist forces, but later released. She returned to Glasgow that November, following speaking engagements in France and Amsterdam.

After the war

After her return from Spain, Ethel MacDonald worked closely with Guy Aldred, Jenny Patrick, John Taylor Caldwell and other Glasgow anarchists on a shoestring publishing enterprise, The Strickland Press, which published regular issues of the USM organ, The Word. They continued their activities through World War II and the 1950s peace movement, with MacDonald considered as the unofficial manager, bookkeeper and printer of the Strickland Press

She died after fighting with MS for three years in 1961 at the age of 51.

NOTE: We are posting this to show you how long the attempts at “entyrism” by Third Position fascist groups have been going on. In 2001 the “European Liberation Front” (and its non-European affiliates in the Liaison Committee for Revolutionary Nationalism, the LCRN) attempted to co-opt the anti-globalization movement by trying to call for a mass demonstration against…the Bilderbergs.

For those unfamiliar with the nuances of the batshit crazy conspiracy theories that the far right uses in place of actual thought and analysis, the Bilderbergs are a private society (true enough) which supposedly control the world through its secret machinations (ppphhtttt). The elaboration usually moves from there to the fact that the Bilderbergs are Jewish, this was all foretold in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, etc – you can guess where that line of thought ends. Instead of analyzing international capital flows and the complicated ways in which national identities are articulated, the Third Positionists simply claim there is a secret, international elite who manipulate everything from behind the scene and are destroying national identities, with a special concern for the (invariably) white ones.

Even more interesting is the “where are they now” of this list:

* The person who forwarded this email, Bill White, around that time was a National-Anarchist who later went on to be a full-fledged Neo-Nazi, associated with groups like the National Alliance and the National Socialist Movement. He’s currently in a federal jail after being caught as a fugitive in Mexico, after serving time for threatening a federal judge.

* Troy Southgate’s “National Revolutionary Faction” is now the National-Anarchist Movement.

* James Porrazzo, the leader of “American Front” at that moment, now is Chairman of the New Resistance.

* The “National Bolshevik Party” continues to this day, although it suffered a number of splits. Alexander Dugin (Porrazzo’s new guru) came out of the group and is promoting his own ideas of a Eurasian alliance.

For nearly 50 years, an elite group composed of some of the world’s top business and political figures has been meeting secretively in isolated resorts around the globe. It is no mystery that not all that is discussed in forums such as Davos, WTO, IMF, World Bank, G-7 or G-8 meetings finally makes it to the media, either controlled or “independent”. And yet the agenda for what has come to be known as the Bilderberg Group has seldom been disclosed.

WHAT IS THE BILDERBERG GROUP?

Simply put, it is one of the most secretive globalist organs post-war society has ever witnessed or, to paraphrase the English journalist Will Hutton, the “High Priesthood of Globalisation.” Founded in 1954, the forum owes its name to the Dutch hotel in which the group’s first meeting ever took place. Since then, Bilderberger delegates – a cross- section of presidents, ministers, industrialists and financial leaders – gather annually in token locations to discuss their classified globalist agenda, neither to be disclosed to the public nor to the press.

Its regular attendants include former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, business tycoon David Rockefeller, International Monetary Fund (IMF) director Stanley Fischer, World Bank president James Wolfensohn and, at one time or another, every U.S. president since Eisenhower up to Clinton.

Under the pretense of allowing so- called “free discussion” between the leading personalities of the establishment, society is left in the dark as to what their leaders think the future should hold. Unaccountable, untroubled and unreported, Bilderberger meetings have formed the basis of international policy for decades.

Why does Bilderberg shroud itself in the utmost confidentiality? What do the world leaders have to hide? That is, if they are not concealing enough already about the agendae of the mainstream global summits.

It seems Bilderberg is the only time in which public officers can cease acting as such under the spurious pretence of privacy. In this way, they refrain from the public accounting that is implicit in the rest of their tenures as policy-makers. It is intriguing that the collaborative silence of the media virtually denies the existence of this forum. It is simply unbelievable that what influentual people discuss behind closed doors is not reflected in their public conduct.

AN APPEAL TO ALL CONSCIENTIOUS ACTIVISTS

With such a profile, it is hardly a surprise that febrile conspiracy theories have thrived around Bilderberg, from the extreme right to the radical left. The effect has been to leave the importance of the meetings tainted by association. It fits the Bilderbergers perfectly. This has taken place for far too long. In recent years, the oligarchic/capitalist structure beneath the guise of a seemingly inoffensive “free-trade”, has been unmasked. Even societies which to all propaganda purposes have apparently met their basic necessities, are experiencing turmoil from the badly-suppressed, thinly-disguised contradictions inherent within capitalism. Rising unemployment, dispossession, cultural nihilism, environmental plundering, issues we know only too well.

And thus we invite you to stand up and reclaim the flags of liberation from those who have spoken too long for us, be it the power centres or the ineffectual political minorities with their tired schemes of left and right. Bilderberg is only the tip of the iceberg, but too heinous a truth to be kept in silence. The dark side of globalization must be brought to light.

We, the National Revolutionaries of the European Liberation Front (ELF), ask you to help us build a new society and encourage the more conscientious people to denounce Bilderberg for what it is. No matter where you are or what your means are, globalisation must be fought globally. Let us drag the oligarchs out onto the streets and make them answer for their actions.

The Day They Killed José Pellicer – Miguel Amorós

On June 8, 1942 they shot the brothers José and Pedro Pellicer Gandía. That day, so tragic for their families, friends and comrades, was, however, just another day in the first years of the Francoist regime, characterized by physical annihilation as a political weapon and state terrorism as a method of government. We would be entirely justified to speak of genocide, since what took place was not the simple execution of opponents, but the elimination, by means of summary proceedings accompanied by every kind of mistreatment and humiliation, of a significant part of the population, which was considered to be hostile, and sympathetic to the republican cause. If we consider the cruel repression meted out to the working class in particular, and especially to those proletarians who played a leading role in the revolutionary events, the Francoist genocide was not as atavistic as a certain postwar literature and the propagandists of the transition to democracy would have us believe. The atrocities and suffering, usually inflicted in a mechanical and routine manner, were not the result of a strange irrationality or a mania on the part of the leaders, they conformed to the same rationality that rules social destiny to this day, although in a less brutal way. This rationality was economic rationality. It was a rescue operation for the bourgeoisie, a counterrevolution; an abrupt step in the process of capitalist modernization that necessarily entailed a cost in human lives: the massacre of the rural and urban proletariat. The result was not a fascist state, but a capitalist state under martial law that utilized fascist means. And it was precisely capitalist development that, by rendering those means obsolete, caused the Francoist apparatus to be reconciled with the surviving opposition, and those who defeated the proletariat in 1937 made peace with those who decimated it in 1939, those who attempted to kill Pellicer in the Plaza Tetuán in Valencia reached an understanding with those who shot him down in the prison courtyard at Paterna.

For obvious reasons this national reconciliation, as the PCE called it, or the reform agreement, as the liberal Francoists called it, was established on the basis of the most absolute amnesia regarding not only the genocide but also the repression that accompanied the regime up to its last day. The corpses are still in their graves, wherever they are buried, and the victims are still anonymous, and there are few left to seek justice for them. History was concealed behind an oath of silence, as if the tens of thousands of deaths were the result of a chance accident, a contingent event that should not be recalled, a macabre lottery. The real memory of the civil war and Francoism was declared closed and court was adjourned: this coincided with amnesia. The changes would not affect those lying under the ground. The attack on memory and the mutilation of the collective memory laid the basis for the legitimization of the new hybrid regime that called itself a “democracy”. This regime contrasted itself to the previous one in the name of certain “democratic values” that were restored by means with which we are quite familiar. Its ideologues whitewashed it by projecting its darkest aspects into the past, as if, with the end of Francoism, all “anti-democratic” methods had also come to an end. A mere glance at the administrative authoritarianism, the parliamentary circus, the disappearance of the public space, the infamous working conditions, the treatment of immigrants, the servile posture of the trade unions, the dismantling of even the most insignificant mechanisms for political participation or oversight, the enormous technical development of social control, consumerist brutalization, totalitarian urbanism, and finally, the increasing harshness of the laws and prisons, are enough to demonstrate the existence of links between Franco’s dictatorship and the televised “democracy”, and even to reveal the existence of a specifically “democratic” barbarism, which does not resort to the physical liquidation of the opposition because it possesses more subtle procedures for neutralizing it.

The new regime that came into existence in 1977 turned history over to the professionals, so that they could select that which it was appropriate to recall and smooth over the contradictions that could not be concealed. The history of this regime is the history of its acts of amnesia, and the latter provide an index of its complicity with the executioners. It all came to a culmination almost forty years later with a law to put a period on that sentence, called the “law of historical memory”. This law nullified any legal possibility of a review for litigation, allowing for a rhetorical and sentimental rehabilitation, and an inoffensive happy ending with its ephemeral emotional discharge. Just what the victims did not need, since the horror of the past is not something that can be ameliorated with distance and escapism. These deaths were characterized by the fact that they are and they will be irreplaceable, they had names, ideas and passions, a life, a history…. Some were anarchists and revolutionaries like Pellicer. All of their deaths constitute a wound inflicted on memory that cannot and must not be healed because its memory fills a signal place in the understanding of and the commitment to fight against barbarism. Any reflection on his martyrdom must always be accompanied by a commitment to never allow it to be integrated into the ideology of power and thus be used to legitimize power. Their deaths cannot form part of the established order. The memory of the victims is not past; it is present. It is not commiseration and sadness; it is determination and combat. In order not to betray their memory we have to contemplate the development of historical struggles from the perspective of the victims. Only the perspective of the victims will prevent their Calvary from being attributed to a bit of bad luck, or worse yet, to a stage in the process of transformation leading to the prevailing form of domination, since it is not hard to discern the features of the disaster that befell the victims in modern afflictions and the unhappiness of so many lives sabotaged by the economic violence of capital and the bureaucratic oppression of the existing institutions.

José Pellicer, who participated in the reorganization of the Valencian FAI and was a combatant of the CNT construction workers trade union, who freed prisoners, who helped found the Iron Column, who was imprisoned by the SIM, who was the commander of the 83rd Mixed Brigade, who was a victim of Franco and a libertarian: as long as yearnings for justice arise among the oppressed your memory will have a profound meaning! Salud!

The day they killed José Pellicer was a day just like today.

“‘Mühsam took the shovel, carefully, as a mother would handle her baby. Then, with the handle firmly gripped in his hands he threw it at the legs of the storm trooper, ripped open his prison shirt, showing his bared breast, and shouted, so loud that you could hear him throughout the whole camp:’”

“‘Here I am. Shoot, you dogs; but I don’t have to dig my own grave.’”

“‘He stood before the execution squad as their accuser. The SA troopers were silent; they were confused and did not know what to do.’”

“‘Finally, the commander shouted an order. They returned Mühsam to his cell. As a result of his spiritual superiority and the strength of his soul, he had won’.”

“Uncle Bremer paused for a moment, then he continued:

Another comrade who was imprisoned with Mühsam recounts that the brown-shirted torturers wanted to force Erich Mühsam to sing the “Horst Wessel” song, and when he refused, he was beaten so savagely that he lost consciousness. During that night, however, he sang the battle song of the revolutionary proletariat, “The Internationale”, in the mortal silence of the camp. He was dragged from his cell and beaten again until he had to be sent to the infirmary.


It’s the eightieth anniversary of Mühsam’s death today.

Depends what you mean by “gun control” I suppose…

Neither side of the mainstream “debate” on gun control is anarchist, as is usually the case, both ‘sides’ are anti-working class, bourgeois positions. The side which says that the state should have a complete monopoly on weapons is not anarchist, for obvious reasons - anything that disempowers the working class and empowers the state is not something we can support.

On the other hand, the idea of respecting an inalienable “right to bear arms” is also not anarchist - it’s a bourgeois individualist construction, pure liberalism (ironically, given the US political vocabulary) - I can think of a million groups I’d happily disarm permanently without a second thought; nazis, for example… rapists, serving and retired police officers, rich people… I don’t think they have a “right” to weapons any more than i think they have a “right” to own land or employ wage labour.

So, ideally, we would have sensible restrictions on gun ownership and use, but under the direct democratic control of the people. I’m aware that no mainstream political party is advocating that, and I’m afraid that no mainstream political party ever will - which is one of the many reasons you shouldn’t have anything to do with them.

Nick Griffin: “National Anarchism: Trojan Horse for White Nationalism” (2005)


[2007 note] This article was written for Green Anarchy magazine under the name “Nick Griffin,” which is obviously a pseudonym. The “other” Nick Griffin is the head of the far-right British National Party, who by coincidence was brought to trial on charges of ‘incitement to racial hatred’ as the issue of GA hit the stands (ie well after the article was written). Apparently more then one unscrupulous North American radical used this opportunity to publicly accuse Green Anarchy of printing an article by the BNP’s Griffin – despite the fact that it was an obviously anti-fascist article! Therefore it should be specified that the “Nick Griffin” of this article is not the same as the BNP’s Nick Griffin; rather, it is a pseudonym of an anti-fascist monitor with a wry sense of humor. Go figure.

Recently a man who hung out in Eugene around green anarchists started promoting the idea of National Anarchism. A few years ago he had written a well-known essay from a green anarchist perspective, and he was a familiar face to many. [2007 note: "Chris" wrote the article "Against Mass Society," which can be found on the cover ofGreen Anarchy #6 (Summer 2001) and is reprinted in Our Enemy Civilization: An Anthology Against Modernity.] His new belief system advocated that people of different ethnic backgrounds should live in different villages, and he later wrote a letter to Green Anarchy in an attempt to propagate his views about supposedly “natural” hierarchies. [GA Note: We were going to print his letter, but it is almost as long as this article, and we did not want to provide a forum for his ideas on "natural hierarchies" and "National Anarchism". If people are interested in the letter, and who wrote it, you can contact us.] Fortunately his attempt to spread this racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic (so-called) “anarchism” were quickly unveiled. But what is National Anarchism? How did it arise, and what does it stand for, and why are these racist Right-wingers attempting to recruit anarchists?

Radical politics of all kinds took a new turn after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and this accelerated after the demonstrations against the WTO in Seattle in 1999. Decentralized and networked political forms started becoming the predominant types of resistance. In the last few years, we have seen anarchism replace marxism as the dominant radical movement in the U.S., but changes have also occurred elsewhere. Parts of the white power movement started advocating “leaderless resistance” as early as the 1980s; the Islamic jihadists Al Qaeda are a state-less, transnational entity; and even marxist groups like Left Turn have rejected the tight “vanguard party” model in favor of a more network-based structure.

But anarchism itself has also became a magnet for the racist radical right, and a tiny fringe group in the UK called the National Revolutionary Faction has re-christened itself as National Anarchists. They are attempting to use anarchist symbolism and rhetoric to recruit both “White Nationalists” (WN, a catch-all term for the various kinds of white racists) as well as anarchists – especially green anarchists – to their strange belief system. They advocate a decentralized economic and political system which features ethnically-pure villages which are defined by racial separatism, anti-semitism and homophobia.

Most National Anarchists (NA) tend to be long-time participants in the Nazi or other racist movements (ie Klan, Christian Identity) who are looking for a new “hook” to use to break-out of the ghettoized White Nationalist scene. Many are former skinheads who retain their interests in racist Oi!, metal and goth bands, European football (soccer), and sci-fi. They also tend to be interested in occult or pagan religions, although the proprietor of the sole NA-affiliated website in the U.S. is a Christian. Sometimes they are interested in the ecology movement or animal rights, although this seems mostly to be lip service to attract anarchists to their ideas. Their real interests are clearly racism against non-white people and a hatred of Jews.

Unfortunately, their bait has seemed to hook a few from the anarchist scene, mostly mystical anarchists, individualists, and green anarchists – including the aforementioned Eugene hanger-on. There has always been a small Left-Right crossover point, especially where the politics involve a mixture of anti-capitalism, mysticism, environmentalism and questions of technology. (Although skewed in its conclusions, Ecofascism: Lessons from the German Experience by Janet Biehl and Peter Staudenmaier offers a detailed historical account of this, and many of the racists have read this and taken it as a guide.)

In Germany, there is also a similar phenomena afoot. There is a wave of fascist groups that are attempting to cross-recruit by sporting Che t-shirts and Palestinian scarves, even marching in Black Blocs! Sometimes calling themselves Autonomous Nationalists, they – just like the National Anarchists – are attempting to pull people from anarchist and left movements into the white racist milieu.

NA guru Troy Southgate claims that NA is a “Third Way” between Capitalism and Communism, and has nothing to do with “fascism.” But he can only do this by falsifying history; for it is fascism that has always been called the Third Way. Southgate attempts to mobilize various philosophies in defense of his project, but he can only do it by distorting their messages. For example, in an essay on National Anarchist history, Southgate cites Gautama (the first Buddha) in support of his own work – but the Buddha was an opponent of the racist caste system. Southgate invokes Hakim Bey, a queer man who would be horrified at this usage of his ideas. Southgate also misattributes Ficthe’s trinitarian concept to Hegel, whose dialectic is not triadic at all, but rather involves a more complicated process of double negations (the negation of the object and then the negation of the negation). Southgate’s attempts at constructing a NA lineage are bullshit to anyone who has read their references.

But besides the details, Southgate’s general claims are historical revisions and obfuscations which only serve to cover up NA’s function as an attempt to recruit people to the same sour old racist right under a new label. Nationalists have even been known to call themselves “anti-fascists” by attempting to redefine Socialists like the PDS (a German left-wing party) as “fascists.” Nonetheless, Southgate quite openly proclaims NA’s intellectual forefathers to be the “left-wing” of the original German Nazi party. Under the leadership of Otto Strasser, these “left-wing fascists” advocated a racist, anti-semitic, ecological, anti-capitalism before being thrown out of the party by Hitler in 1930, several years before his rise to power. A long discussion on the Stormfront site (a kind of bizzaro-world Infoshop.org for racists) will confirm that racist “White Nationalists” themselves look to NA to recruit anarchists and others to their cause, much the same way that Marxist-Leninists utilize the strategy of front groups. Here is an excerpt from that page, in a post by Pan Zagloba:

How can National Anarchism recruit people to our cause?

It speaks to these kids [anarchists] in a language they understand, which draws them closer to our side, and makes them more open to our ideas.

It plays upon their distrust of Marxism, Zionism, and ZOG [the “Zionist-Occupied Government].

It demonstrates to them something that they probably don’t realize now – that many WN values are often the same as theirs. These include concern for the environment, distrust of globalization and the NWO, and a desire to preserve the rights of indigenous peoples (in our case, Europeans).

Websites and other media that support National Anarchism expose them to quotes from prominent Anarchist thinkers which actually support WN, such as Bakunin’s and Bookchin’s writings on nationalism.

It can show them that the mainstream Left’s version of “diversity” doesn’t leave room for Whites. This can be very instrumental, as a large portion of the Anarchist movement is made up of disaffected White youth.

Once they become more interested in National Anarchism, they are more open to the influence of other nationalist and WN ideas, up to and including National Socialism.


How can we be sure this is the case?

Well, this is purely anecdotal, but: It worked on me, and I have the feeling that I’m not the only one here on Stxrmfrxnt who may have been attracted to WN due to exposure to National Anarchist ideas.


NA itself has a complicated history. Its origins are in a ‘70s UK racist right-wing party called the National Front, who are probably best known to U.S. anarchists as the object of hatred in many ’77 punk songs. The group adopted a “Third Positionist” stance in the ‘80s, attempting to meld elements of communist and fascist political systems. They embraced racial separatism (as opposed to White Supremacy, which often advocates racial genocide) and started to work with black and Asian racial nationalist groups to promote their common ends of ethnic separatism. In the early ‘90s these politics were later copied by Florida Klan leader (and former SDS member) John Baumgardner, which led to the spectacle of joint Klan and Black nationalist demonstrations, held in conjunction with Chief Osiris Akkebala’s Pan-African Internationalist Movement (PAIN).

Originally a two-tone Ska skin, Southgate ‘crossed-over’ into the white power Oi! scene and became a teenage National Front organizer. He later navigated several splits in the party-turned-movement, first entering the International Third Position (who tried to recruit the far-right Roman Catholics of the Society of St. Pious X), and then the English Nationalist Movement (ENM). In 1998 the National Revolutionary Faction came out of the ENM, and then in turn morphed into the National Anarchist movement in 2003. NA is friendly with groups such as the National Bolsheviks in Russia, who mix their Stalinism with German fascism, and NA cites influences as diverse as occult philosopher Julius Evola, Libyan leader Colonel Qathafi and former UK Green Anarchist editor Richard Hunt. Hunt quit the magazine to form the eco-fascist Alternative Green group, which Southgate says NRF was “heavily influenced by” and which helped prompt their transition to so-called “anarchism.”

NAs also frequently cite anarchist founders Proudhon and Bakunin as influences, supposedly for their advocacy of an economically decentralized society. Actually, they are more interested in their anti-semitism, an unfortunate attribute that both thinkers shared but which all anarchists since have repudiated. If this wasn’t the case, why are NAs reluctant to mention other decentralists such as Alexander Berkman or Emma Goldman? The answer is because of their clear opposition to nationalism, and their progressive politics and Jewish backgrounds. Jews were always a vital part of the European anarchist movement, and no amount of NA historical revisionism can change this.

Southgate sometimes makes feeble attempts to avoid answering if NA is anti-semitic, lest its true nature as a White Nationalist front group be revealed and potential recruits be put off. However, in a Stormfront discussion, the man who posts as “Faith & Folk” calls for fellow-travelling National Bolsheviks to be “more folk centered and dare I say anti-Zionist and Judaic.” In a 2001 interview (http://www.rosenoire.org/interviews/southgate.php), after a rant about “International Zionism” and the banking industry, Southgate is asked point-blank if he is an anti-semite. He responds by reciting a bizarre story about Israeli Jews actually being not Jewish but being members of another ethnic group, while at no point repudiating anti-semitism. In the same interview he says that he is not a fascist “because the main tenets of this creed – bureaucracy, centralisation, the police state, the cult of personality, the mass movement etc. – are contrary to our objectives.” Naturally, the Nazi murder of 6 million Jews represents no problem to Southgate. Only organizational issues separate him from the Hitler cultists.

In the end, since there is so little that is anarchist in National Anarchism, they will probably have limited success in recruiting anarchists. Anarchists seek the abolition of all hierarchies on the basis of our common humanity – not a separatism based on ethnic, religious or sexual identity. In any event, most NAs seem obsessed with watching and deprecating the more orthodox racist factions, as if they were somehow not just as much a part of the white power circus. But if people appear in your scene sporting the National Anarchist symbol (a purple star with an NA in the middle), or attempt to promote the setting up of separate ethnic villages, know that these people are not talking about a new kind of anarchism, but just a very old and obscure style of fascism. If you encounter these people, don’t be fooled by the surface similarities; treat them as if they were Klan members or Nazis. The only difference is that this time, instead of pointy hats and braces, their racist ideas come dressed in a hoodie and patches.
