I loved The Drop; didn't care for the other one, tho it kept me riveted...

Yeah thanks for that Gilroy interview d&c - good read.

coffin dodger - I think it's clear the movie was written with Bloom as a sociopathic antagonist, but of course it's very possible that many people who watched it took something very different from it, and saw Bloom as a hero. That might well have happened with the new Robocop. It happened in a big way with Natural Born Killers, and to some degree with Fight Club. I remember being amazed at the lack of self-awareness that drove the publishers to issue a special movie tie-in edition of the book Fight Club.

I'm still sort of agnostic about Wolf of Wall Street. It very clearly became a movie that was watched for the pleasure viewers took from the absolute hedonism of the main characters, with the little moral lesson hidden very deeply in it, an almost-afterthought that popped up at the end and then went away again. I don't know if Scorsese changed his movie in the edit, or whether he watned that - maybe the book and the movie are essentially like those pornographic books that use the fig leaf of a moral lesson as a pretext to put in a whole lot of titillating scenes.

I felt pretty much the same about Wolf of WS.

For one thing, they needed to cut about 40 minutes out of it. My God. Some of those scenes go on needlessly forever.

I've seen Scorsese say, in an interview, that it was definitely supposed to be "anti" this kind of shit. But the movie barely comes across this way. Instead he seems kind of like a lovable renegade.

I always had a real issue with the casting of DiCaprio in this movie. Because he instantly glamorizes the character. And this creep should never be glamorized. I understand tho how film financing works and if you get deCaprio in your movie you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Intense movie, about the American independent mindset..

Just watched "Her" on HBO and was amazed. So fresh and original and just great.

I really wasn't expecting it to be so good.

Her was about Him... Ho hum.
-------------------
Nightcrawler should have been Movie of the Year, imo! Strikingly shot on the seamy streets of the LA area, it is an - all too potentially real - psychotic adventure with delectablel dialogue and a delicious cast. Jake Guylendahl is Louis Bloom - the creepy, psychotic, self-promoter boosting the ratings and the unprincipled TV producer - aptly portrayed by a rough Renee Russo with extremely big hair and very bad make-up, whom Bloom deceitfully manipulates along with his struggling new apprentice - soulfully depicted by some unknown guy named Rick Garcia, while staging sensational shots of car wrecks and carnage just in time for the 10 o'clock news.

"You gotta call the cops!!", insists the assistant as they witness a mess.

"And we will. ...At the right time.", replies his boss, Louis Bloom, "...You know what FEAR stands for??

... False Evidence Appearing Real!!

---------------

ehh...

Speaking of canines, I was recently told that dogs interpret the emotion on a human's face - to determine if a human is friend, foe, or prey perhaps. Conversely, the director of White God has cleverly filmed the sequences so that dogs convey emotions too. The fights, beatings and bad behavior were a bit unbearable, but the dogs were incredible and beautifully filmed in a part of the world I've hardly seen. All in all, the ending was worth it and I wound up liking this Napolean Dynamite of mongrel metaphor.

Kornel Mundruczo’s newest film is a story of the indignities visited upon animals by their supposed “human superiors,” but it’s also an brutal, beautiful metaphor for the political and cultural tensions sweeping contemporary Europe. When young Lili is forced to give up her beloved dog Hagen, because it's mixed-breed heritage is deemed 'unfit' by The State, she and the dog begin a dangerous journey back towards each other. At the same time, all the unwanted, unloved and so-called 'unfit' dogs rise up under a new leader, Hagen, the one-time house pet who has learned all too well from his 'Masters' in his journey through the streets and animal control centers how to bite the hands that beats him …

"Her" was in fact about "him", true, in that it was a love story for men.

I can't remember the last time I saw one of those that was any good.

Most love stories these days are the worst kinds of what are usually referred to as "chick flicks".

I thought "Her" was so non formulaic in its execution, that it amazed me. Very intelligent and just the right amount of futuristic.

Agreed, and thanks for the tip to watch it. I pondered it occasionally over the following days, which is always good.

What's it say when to shoot a futuristic LA you go to present day Shanghai?

Just saw Nightcrawler. Thanks for the rec. My kid liked it too which was another reason I saw it.

What a weird mashup of American Psycho/ Network/ and Fight Club. I will agree that it is discomfiting because one is never sure how far the tongue is jammed into the cheek. The few times I laughed was not because it was 'ha-ha' funny.

I have to give props to JG. He manages to out do Tony Perkins and Christian Bale in 'white middle class psycho'. He seriously weirded me out.

I tried to watch "Her" several times and each time fell asleep.

Maybe looking at Scarlett Johansson would keep me more awake.

I will try again.

Ha. I didn't have that problem. I do wonder, however, how much associating that voice with our perception of Miss Johanssen (for most men at least) affected my reaction. Her voice is very distinctive. And she's a heart-melter, at least in movies.
