This thread was probably started to be an intentional shit house anyway. "progressives" are not really supposed to care about all this anyway, but apparently, they cannot stop stirring the shit pot, which is a very constructive bit of awareness for those with an ability to notice. I'm leaning in a way toward the side of possibly considering RI's ability to bitch slap this thread as a success, and at the same time terribly sad it ever got posted in the first place. Low quality bait....

A lot of people here take their activism and personal convictions very seriously, it's part of their identity. And when things get wrapped up in identity it's very easy to take everything personally.

As a fun exercise, I wonder what would happen if we duct-tapped a mirror to everyone's monitor, or perhaps used a webcam, then had them read back what they write while watching themselves say it. Call it metaposting.

Thanks, GP, you just reminded me to tape over my laptop cam.

I haven't attended any of the more combustive threads at RI but from what I've heard, this one has been remarkably civil and cogent. I do think opportunities are being missed to go deeper tho. Maybe still too soon to expect brainstorming. But did anyone else know about postgenderism? I sure didn't.

Edit: as for low quality bait, isn't the quality of the bait best evaluated by what it catches?
It is a lot easier to fool people than show them how they have been fooled.

No I did not either. I am also thinking that anybody in their right fucking mind understands that people are born as one sex or another, and then after that people play in each others britches as they see fit. I'm not sure if we live in a culture that is this fucking confused about what human beings are, or if there are people intentionally fucking up the information stream, but after this thread, i'm pretty sure it is the latter. I hope we don't have people running around in this world that cannot understand the structure of human chromosones but who knows, I suppose anything is possible. Considering the mountain of intelligence that is available in this forum this entire thread, and the fact that it could even exist here, is a disappointment to me. There are a lot of forums for people to bitch about their little sexual preferences on the internet but I hope this forum does not become one because i'm pretty sure that is not what Jeff had in mind because jeff's mind is much bigger than that.

I knew you would bite that hook but i have better things to think about. :wink

definition of gender
either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated by social and cultural roles and behavior:

You need to re-read that definition when you have time.

You need to understand something. In 99.93 percent of the cases nature made a man and a woman. Male and female. We can see this because peoples little private parts are different. Your insane notion that this is not correct is a little bit insane.

I promise you its true because I have played around in other peoples pants and everything was not the same ok? Genitals do exist, they really do.

I don't give a tinkers damn in hell about this whole subject and i have already said that. But when this sort of obvious stupidity comes in here I decided to defend RI against it and I have already said that.

I am not the RI guardian and its not my job. But for the last two or three days I was willing. I may never do it again. Who knows?

But if you don't understand that nature makes little boys and little girls at birth you don't need be posting on the internet and your mommy needs to take away your keyboard.

I hate to be an asshole but this is just fucking stupid and I hate to see this forum get eaten alive by this sort of damn battery acid stupidity.

I'm done with this bullshit. I did my job. We understand that you can't tell the difference between a man and a woman and I am sorry that you cannot do that. I really am. I am doubting that you don't have this ability but i am attempting to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Right now I am reading a book on the historical roots of religion and its impact on modern culture and this is really nothing more than an amusing fly on the wall for me. Ok?

Sweetheart, mandatory gender reassignment for all is coming under the ACA whether you like it or not.

So what will this involve? Is the ACA planning to cut out my genitals and reverse them or what? You scare me a little bit. I like what I have and I don't want to be reassigned right now at this stage in my life. Can I opt out?

Please do, seeing as how I wasn't trolling. The issue in question is a very good example of what passes for activism these days. Or is a little sarcasm unwelcome here?

I just spent 10 minutes rereading the Sfgate article you linked to and composing an outline of a response to your original comment and subsequent question in my head and as my response got longer and longer I realized my initial assessment that your comment deserved no better than "Don't be a dickhead" was correct. Sorry. That's all you get this morning.

The problem in general is, those of us who are analyzing where interests and experiences intersect are raising valid questions, which are of course being ignored, within this thread, and everywhere else.

There are two things that are very clear to me. 1. Any criticism leveled towards the efforts of an obviously oppressed group that is justifiably fighting for sorely needed civil rights and protections against ongoing violence is going to be perceived as insensitive, or even hostile or bigoted. I get it, I reside within such a group and understand completely reactions based in this perspective. 2. Everybody hates women, and everybody hates feminists even more. While there may be social sanctions against talking shit about any number of oppressed groups, the rules are always loosened and/or ignored when it comes to women.

So we have some folks here who label themselves intersectional, but seem incapable of tracking all roads leading in, especially the ones labeled female. With respect to this, could we please have some sort of substantive response rather than a dismissive hand waving of AOC's posts? Could folks here somehow imagine that it is possible to feel and incorporate compassion for trans people and still be critical of aspects of trans politics?

If trans folk are boycotting the Zoolander film, can we not break it down in honest fashion, and while we're at it, can we explore why Radfems are protesting this film:

"Like a real fish, girl, like vagina, and everything."
Violence against women is so progressive, so hip, so trans inclusive, get on it honey!

It's a movie, and I get that treatment of women (and trans people) in Hollywood both in scripts and staffing is complex and rife with failing, but how many main protagonist characters could get away with this behavior if they weren't trans?

I know, how dare I right? How dare I even speak when there's so much oppression against trans people and this movie represents a stab into the mainstream, I get that. The issue is, how does this portrayal of homosexual transgenderism prop up and/or challenge existing deleterious social structures. That is a worthy conversation.

I am happy to engage in a battle of ideas, but I don't see that happening here. I see many people attaching themselves to ideology and unwilling to defend it in any logical way. Let there be room to thoughtfully argue this all out, with the baseline being compassion for trans folk, and women, and all of us.

This is every bit the strawperson as that which you allege. Due and sincere respect but, in turn, there are two things that have become clear to me: 1.) this thread is comically rife with projection and 2.) it became absurd a long time ago.

As far as "some sort of substantive response" to AOC, perhaps you could lead the way by providing one to the latter half of the following:

Agent Orange Cooper » Wed Nov 18, 2015 5:27 pm wrote:It's [transgenderism] entirely based around the total denial of basic biological facts, such as sexual dimorphism in mammals, not to mention normalizing mental illness.

Baseline compassion, indeed.

May there be sincere, informed, and respectful discussion of trans politics and gender issues from here on out.
