The license for Star Wars action figures was offered in 1976 to the Mego Corporation, which was the leading company in action figures in the 1970s. Mego refused the offer and the license was subsequently picked up by Kenner, a subsidiary of General Mills.[1]

Although the original Star Wars film had been released in May 1977, Kenner was unprepared for the unprecedented response to the film and the high demand for toys. Unable to build sufficient stock in time for the lucrative Christmas market, they instead sold an "Early Bird Certificate Package" which included a certificate which could be mailed to Kenner and redeemed for four Star Wars action figures.[2] The box also contained a diorama display stand, some stickers, and a Star Wars fan club membership card.[3][4][5]

By the time the action figures were offered for direct sale in shops, the range had been augmented with a further eight figures, bringing the total number of figures in the initial release to twelve. These were supplemented later in 1978 with a number of vehicle and playset accessories, as well as the J.C. Penney exclusive Sonic controlled landspeeder and the Sears exclusive Cantina adventure playset which introduced four new figures.[6][7]

The four figures that were first brought out in the Sears Cantina set were released for individual sale with a further four figures later in 1978, bringing the total number of figures to 20. Demand for the action figures and accessories was such that Kenner continued to have difficulty fulfilling demand. Shortages of the toys in the lead up to Christmas 1978 led some to claim that Kenner were deliberately manipulating the market.[8] Sales of Kenner's Star Wars range in 1978 reached 40 million units, accounting for a revenue of $100 million.[9]

In the anticipation of the release of the sequel The Empire Strikes Back, Kenner offered their first mail-in promotion, in which four proof of purchases could be redeemed for a new action figure, Boba Fett. This figure was originally intended to feature a backpack with a firing missile, but this was abandoned due to safety fears.[10] Similar mail in promotions were periodically offered through to 1984.

Sales in 1979 again topped $100 million.[9] Kenner continued to introduce waves of action figures from the sequels and in 1984, the year following the release of Return of the Jedi, the range totaled 79 unique character designs.

In 1985, the figure range was renamed Power of the Force in which a further 15 figures were released. Two further ranges of Star Wars action figures were also released, based on the animated series, Star Wars: Droids and Star Wars: Ewoks. The Droids range comprised 12 figures (two of which were identical to figures from the main Star Wars line) and the Ewoks line comprised six figures.

By mid-1985, the demand for Star Wars merchandise had slowed and Kenner discontinued production of its action figures.

Thanks Jack.

Sorry, I was in a hurry eating lunch and didn't quite see your humor. :moresarcasm lol

I love sci-fi, but haven't broadened my horizons very well beyond the entire Dune chronicles, sans Brian Herbert, that stuff was mediocre at best.

Appreciate your comments and will try to be less serious...maybe. : )

I never cared if guys run around dressed in star wars garb having fun until the May 4 thing, then was just so pissed as it's such an insult to people who do mark that date as FUBAR by the then Ohio gov along with Nixon and whole gang of asshat thugs.

Sorry, it was a joke about your implicit diss of science fiction, the true literature of our age.

Appreciate your comments and will try to be less serious...maybe. : )

Quoting to add my avatar to your montage, which was very much appreciated!

I've never been a big SW fan, but I have an 11-y.o., so was somewhat compelled to see it. At least she liked it! I tried my best to be engaged, but mostly just got irritated by the really lazy writing.

Thanks, after I hit send I worried I might get in trouble. I started out with one line, "You were expecting Ingmar Bergman?" but got carried away.

If I'd had more time, I would have photoshopped Vader's head onto Death's body. Anyone? :partydance:

I was 12 for the first one, so of course become enthralled and it does occupy some part of my heart...Maybe I will try an early show after New Years, but a space opera is ultimately difficult to pull off on film, so I don't have any grand illusions...but I'm a gonna threadjack, because, well, LEMMY!

So I actually saw part of this... somehow! And I'm amazed at how dull its producers are. Basically they could get the same box office doing anything, not that you'd expect them to, but they could change it up and tell any new story, at least within the set bounds of hero's journey and laser action and good and evil and don't kill the protagonist and what-not. First of all, the music excretes all over. And they choose to reprise the whole original formula by rote, without a hint of life and without deviation: the Empire's back as though it never left, there's a new Vader just like the old, a new Emperor just as ugly and now sized to Wizard of Oz proportions, a new Granny Duffer Tonkin Gulf, a new Death Star, a cute droid carrying a message, a Skywalker from Tatooine, girl this time, an escaped stormtrooper in the Han Solo position - seeing as Han Solo himself has been recast as the now-secular Obi-Wan - Chewbacca as Chewbacca, the MF as the MF, a silly exotic bar with jingly music, a Yoda, totally boring quintillion-to-one coincidences where we run into each other just at the right time for getting into and out of messes in the middle of the cozy Grand Central Station known as galactic space, big wormy monsters that want to eat you, Cockney pirates, etc. etc., none of the bad guys can hit the side of a nebula with their laser rifles, and everyone seems headed toward finding out they're actually the daughter of this or the brother of that, ooh revelations, then a big explosion for the climax, kill me now. I stopped at the part with the redux of the planetary genocide, this time not viewed from without but from the surface, with the billions of victims screaming, etc. I'm sure all our survivors will be over it in a scene or two.

Oh yeah, Chewbacca=chew tobacco. That's the connection! Humanity wins again!

Torrented the HD version yesterday and just now watched it. I don't care because I have spent thousands and thousands on the franchise in my life. For those who prefer no spoilers, I do in fact give it a B+. Fantastic way to "awaken" the almost ruined franchise. Fuck, it was good. I can see where some say that it's just a reboot of A New Hope, however they don't know their canon. It included aspects of all of the first three. Hope, Empire and Jedi were all wrapped into one so that it can move onto some new plot was my feeling. Good shit. I semi-cried at least a dozen times.

I dunno, I just watched it and although I've not yet seen the Sith flick, I thought it was the worst of all.

I think one must be a "true believer", was my takeaway. A lot of people didn't like Return of the Jedi either. Not gonna defend it since I have no defense of my own for taking this long to see it. I give the prequels all Ds. I think it recaptured feelings I felt when I was like 5 and did a good job at doing so.

Like I said, I think that it wasn't anything verbatim from A New Hope but a reboot of the entire original three combined into one. I expect it to take a fork from here.

I don't know, 82, maybe it's just me. I've been pretty sick with pneumonia over the past week and maybe it's I wanted more to believe than was presented. A school bus took out my parked car on Tuesday, so fuck star wars.

Fuck man! I'm sorry to hear all of that. You're the second person today that told me they have pneumonia. If a school bus hit your car, that merits a lawsuit does it not?

In a sense I filed a "lawsuit" against the Star Wars hoopla for going to and buying every single film at least four times over, books, many toys, clothing, paying to go to Star Wars fest in 1999. Paying David Prowse $15 for his pathetic autograph. I've paid my dues. Thank you pirate bay!

I have no collision coverage, just liability. The bus' insurance co, will offer a poor value and will most likely declare my car "totaled." That means they will offer somewhere around $1500 to $2k for a car with a $3500 - $5k replacement cost. ('98 Honda Civic, my son's old car.)

Sorry for harshing your SW glow. It's not all that bad. Just feeling crappy about much.

Sue them for loss of work and punitive damages. Make shit up. You couldn't get to the pharmacy/doctor in time for your condition. You lost a client. Missed deadlines. Shit like that.
