And an awesome score, very atmospheric and very unusual, completely staying away from the usual Hollywood string arrangements. And a great plot. One of the better movies I've seen this year for sure.

So I did too. Excellent film-making. It may be something we've seen in terms of the deep state/narco state politics, and not bad at it. But as you describe, highly atmospheric. By this director I had seen the great Incendies, and now I will happily watch the rest of what he's done. Blade Runner 2? Well, if they had to try it, a good chance it will work.

Looks interesting. I started to download but learned that a restored version will be released on blu-ray in January...

Lots of good recommendations here recently. Thanks everybody.

I thought The Lobster was both good and discomfiting.

Had a mini Michael Moore fest. Well worth it. He's much smarter than I gave him credit for, far smarter than many of his critics and appears to be a genuinely decent and committed human being. Where to Invade Next should probably be required viewing and discussion for the British and American victims of neoliberalism. Follows a similar format to Sicko (which we also viewed) of contrasting ideology and culture through specific social examples. What follows aims toward the overwhelming universality revealed by our differences, where those differences are exploited and why so many of them are artificial. Deserves the widest possible audience in America.

Green Room exceeded high expectations; the director did one of my favorite horror comedies, which he downplays, and one of my favorite films, period -- Blue Ruin. I don't know if some kind of chromatic series is in the works. Next up: Red Death.

Having grown up in punk bands and devolved into a mere rapper, though, I recognize "Green Room" as an absolutely perfect title for what I saw. Whether you're catching up on sleep or smoking blunts, headline acts get to hang out in the green room. I've been in probably a thousand in various capacities and masks, maybe thirty were actually green. Yet always: the green room.

Everything else I've seen lately has just been garbage, and I'm grateful that this film showed me that.

Also, remarkably resonant with the events in Sacramento.

Just had a small binge on low-budget/TV movie doomsday films:

Without Warning (full movie. Yay!):

Miracle Mile:
Guy picks up random pay-phone, dude on the other end is in a missile silo and claims the missiles have been launched. Mad scramble to gtfo ensues.

Countdown to Looking Glass (Again, full movie, with Newt Gingrich and everything):

If you were a kid in the 70s in the US, I can't imagine Knievel not meaning something to you...And it is inarguable, for better or worse, that he was a mystical spark for all the "extreme" sports that followed, which a friend of mine suggested is a way to weed out the youth population since big wars like Vietnam were no longer possible...

In the summer of '95 I stayed for a while with friends in Plaistow, London to hawk my portfolio around the illustration agencies. I remember how it was a very hot summer, people throwing Frisbee in the park, me soaking up the art in the galleries. I watched this film in an otherwise empty theatre in Leicester square, I suppose in retrospect that it made quite an impression upon me.

Anyway, I remember the morning, the heat, the baked clarity of the light. One of our neighbours, a young Chinese man came onto the patio of the house next door naked and stood there for a while savouring the day while eating breakfast cereal from a bowl. I remember the smile on his face, his relaxed poise, his future ahead of him. A few weeks later after I'd arrived home I got the call from the friends I'd stayed with, the story of how they found the bodies.

Years later, I bumped into a man who had been there, who knew all the details, knew those who'd ordered the killing, so he said. Strange. What does one do with such unbelievable spirals except to accept.

Since finding sites that stream new movies for free (v naughty ; ) I have started watching lots of films. The Grimsby boys made me laugh out loud tons of times with its schoolboy toilet humour, starring sacha baron cohen (Borat) a typical scene?..... where to hide when the baddies are after you and you are in the scrub with no trees, rocks etc but there is a herd of elephants why of course they crawl in to an elephants vagina who them gets screwed by 15 bulls and they get battered and soaked by two metre schlongs. No more spoilers - but do watch for belly larfs: )

Also saw Demolition - has Jake Gyllenhaal ever done a bad movie? very clever look at grief but not sentimental.

Check out Threads. One of the scariest films I've ever seen, can only imagine what it must have felt like to watch it in 1984.

Already seen it and loved it (wrong word for that particular film, but you know what I mean). Scary and insanely depressing at the same time.

@Harvey: In the Mouth of Madness is a great movie. It's part of Carpenter's Apocalypse trilogy, the other two movies being The Thing and Prince of Darkness, both very good movies if you haven't seen them. Prince of Darkness is pretty cheesy in places, but the overall story is awesome.

I also kinda like the new The Thing movie, probably because they use actual Norwegians to play the Norwegians, and not just a bunch or random Danes and Swedes like they usually do, and the creature looks pretty cool.

I watched that SRA movie couple weeks ago. It was terrible in every way, but what especially struck me was the complete lack of acting talent Emma Watson seems to have! Shame cos i really liked the director's previous movie "The Others" which imo was a stylish and smart horror with Nicole Kidman.

Weird. I've seen Emma Watson in other movies and she's been quite good. Seemed to be the only real Harry Potter veteran who could really act.
