The ‘alt-right’ is a mainstream media myth

Far from Donald Trump being a member of the 'alt-rIght', the movement itself exists only in the minds of the mainstream media and a few pundits, who have taken the insult and turned it into a term of endearment.
In his closed-door meeting with the New York Times, Donald Trump was repeatedly asked about any possible connections he may or may not have with the so-called ‘Alt-Right’.

First of all, I do not acknowledge there is a movement called the ‘Alt-Right’. There is no such party, no such manifesto to which the name is ascribed, no NGO, no lobbying group and it has no physical headquarters. When one types in http://www.altright.com, one finds a website under construction, weeks after Donald Trump’s election.

‘Alt-Right’ is simply a new way for the old, dying liberal establishment to slander traditional conservatives who do not fit the neo-con/neo-lib mould of the Bushes, Obamas, Sarzozys, Camerons and Merkels of the world.

As I have said countless times, Donald Trump is an old fashioned conservative Republican in the model of Robert Taft. It is true that Trump’s industrial and economic policies have a hint of socialism about them. Indeed, Taft himself was accused of having socialist sympathies by follow Republicans skeptical of funding public works programmes for the needy which Taft tended to support.

Trump is not right wing or ever far right wing, he is a traditional conservative who happens to have a dynamic personality, one which is far less personally judgmental than many so-called ‘culture wars’ Republicans who emerged in the 1980s. Likewise, there is nothing alternative about views which far from radical, are characteristic of a pre-Cold War Republicanism.

The term ‘Alt-Right’ is an epithet increasingly used to smear traditional conservatives as some kind of violent or extreme fringe movement. It’s becoming an obsession of the old liberal mainstream media, something Trump pointed out during his meeting with New York Times reporters as he purportedly stated, “Boy, you are really into (this issue)”.

Trump clearly couldn’t care less about it and nor should anyone else. It’s a distraction designed to make Trump and his core supporters look like something they are not. The New York Times demonstrated despicable behaviour in attempting to trap the President-elect in a minefield of illogic.

One is under no obligation to disassociate oneself from something which he or she was never associated with. Likewise, one has no need to disavow something to which one pledged no loyalty to in the first place. But Trump clearly wanted to show the snide reporters that the problem they imagine has nothing to do with Trump and his team.

He handled the situation well and was wise to point out that the entire ‘Alt-Right’ nonsense is an obsession of the New York Times, not his.

It’s mostly more propaganda adding to the hype, but there is a useful tip.

Scrub the video below to one minute, forty nine seconds. You will find an explanation there how Facebook users can flag what they think are fake news stories.

The next time you see a story in your Facebook feed posted by the corporate media you know is propaganda or an outright lie, report the post as fake news.

It’s a two-way street.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but amidst all the McCarthy attacks some media orgs are making in a doomed effort to protect their turf as the only legitimate thought-space,

we are acknowledging that there was and still is a lot of disinfo spread in fake news, are't we?

Not the mainstream media "weapons of mass destruction" kind, but the only-a-zealot-or-an-idiot-would-believe-this'internet-bullshit kind of fake news.

The kind of fake news like "Video proves paid protestors are bussed to anti-Trump rally" that shows nothing but people getting off a bus, or "Video shows Democrat poll workers stuffing ballot boxes" that was actually from Russia.

Because a lot of people who say they dont trust 'the media' seem prone to unquestioningly believe this obvious propaganda, and it gets credence on sites like ZeroHedge, while the hypocrites decry the bias of the NYT. This kind of bullshit even made some appearances at RI before the election. While i have no problem acknowledging the MSM (for lack of a better term) is sometimes full of shit and pushing an agenda, let us not pretend there aren't many outright lies and agenda-pushing on many of these non-institutional websites like those named in the WaPo hit piece.

I thought this spirit cooking was something two people do alone together, and it's a three day long thing. Not something you do in an evening.

Yes, there are different levels of 'fake news.' Spin, framing, selective editing, unbalanced focus, flat-out propaganda are all tools that anyone can use to shape and direct a narrative. News, mainstream or otherwise, is really mostly agenda advertising.

It's a shame that 'fake news' is now being redefined as literally false stories, and propaganda is now considered 'real news.' People seem to be willingly muting their own critical faculties.

Tell me a little about why you started Disinfomedia?

Late 2012, early 2013 I was spending a lot of time researching what is now being referred to as the alt-right. I identified a problem with the news that they were spreading and created Disinfomedia as a response to that. The whole idea from the start was to build a site that could infiltrate the echo chambers of the alt-right, publish blatantly false or fictional stories, and then be able to publicly denounce those stories and point out the fact that they were fiction.

What got you engaged in this?

My educational background is in political science. I’ve always enjoyed the ideas of propaganda and misinformation. Then I coupled that with an interest in what makes things go viral. So that led me to finding those groups and ultimately to finding contributors. But it was just something I had an interest in that I wanted to pursue.

What would "winning" look like for these diehard Clinton types? Obviously they are dedicated to disseminating false information, that is to say fake news.

Most people from all over the political spectrum are against their newly intensified agenda. Even people without strong commitments to the left or right are questioning narratives about things like the Syrian war.

Attempts at censorship in the West are failing, in places like Germany creating a Streisand effect. Strong censorship combined with "liberalism" is a tough, fragile sell.

Censorship by say, the Chinese or Turkish ruling party relies on the depth of their base of supporters and ideological appeals. Say what you will about these countries, they have at least been building their economies and providing opportunities for their populations for some time.

"Fake news" may be the final nail in the coffin of the Western MSM... I think it's safe to say most of the population is already figuring out alternatives.

What seems less clear is where those whose job has been to disseminate the failing party line will go.

The left should be encouraged by the MSM collapse... controlled opposition right sources like Breitbart or Alex Jones are closer to the MSM than they'd like to admit... of course they aren't dedicated to constructing an "official reality" like New York Times, The Globe and Mail, or similar outlets. So the whole "fake news" conspiracy isn't as relevant there.
