Not unfathomable that they are being threatened by some manner of satanic mafia where Jay and Bey are powerful members.

5.0 out of 5 stars: The businessman drinks the coffee. The shark eats the businessman. The monster eats the shark. The monster eats the monster...

In this book, Derek Swannson nails down his claim to be the conspiracy world’s Nick Cave. The latest in the Crash Gordon series is a brooding, sexy, outlandishly clever and emotionally literate spin through the horrors of late capitalism and the very real rise of a punitive security state.
We join our hero, Derek Swannson (yes!), as he hangs out with his friend Justine, talking conspiracies. A day later, Derek and his girlfriend Pam stumble across Justine’s mutilated corpse and, soon after, Derek finds that his slumping book sales have suddenly benefited from a massive and inexplicable boost.
Of course, it’s all part of a scheme hatched by an ethereal Satan-type and one of his billionaire human buddies, who want to make Derek a rich, miserable sell-out in order to scotch his unnervingly successful authorial efforts to enlighten the entire planet. Consequently, Derek and Pam start partying with thinly veiled stand-ins for Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (LARDassian) and, ultimately, meet black versions of Henry Kissinger and David Rockefeller – the lizardy rulers of all, who tempt Derek to join the Illuminati. If this all sounds rather silly and self-indulgent, I think that’s the point – and it works.
The greatest joy here though is in the real richness of conspiracy discourse. The material on 9/11 and JFK is already well-known fare but I found it to be particularly well distilled, while the details on the often complex Danny Casolaro/ PROMIS case were especially well elucidated and provided in plenty of glorious detail.
But Crash Gordon is much more: Thai prostitute pianists, tapeworm economics, UFOs and Archons, and echoes of those other American iconoclasts – P.J O’Rourke, Hunter S. Thompson, Thomas Pynchon. Every page is packed with more ideas and cultural references than you’d expect in entire chapters of normal fictional books. Inevitably, then, The Illuminati Underground can feel like a bit of a monster, akin to its classic antecedent - in both style and content – The Illuminatius! Trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea. I mean, even the front cover is a massive shark eating a businessman whilst that massive shark is being eaten by Leviathan… you get the vibe.
It's a full, hard hit of all that is wondrous and appalling about contemporary US society. I'd go as far as to say that reading Swannson’s latest is like being shot into space on hallucinogens in a rocket packed with Americana and dynamite. Bite down hard on leather, then enjoy the overdose.
