"The natural thing for me to suggest is, why not just scroll by the stuff you don't like? Not just you, but the others who aren't enjoying it."

Yes, if you had taken your advice to heart you wouldn't have criticized my posting, and your continued responses to it that others found disagreeable probably would never have happened.

And enough of this nonsense, "This is one of those places where I can't really please everyone." Start your own thread and set whatever rules for participating in it you'd like to, as long as they comply with RI's Board Rules. Doing this will please everyone.

It was just a suggestion. You don't have to scroll by if you so choose.

No, I won't be starting my own thread. We'll just have to agree to disagree on the rules of the image thread.

You still don't get it dada. Your reaction to my rule violation was wrongly interpreted by you as me scolding you. You, while under a wrong impression of the intent of my posting, initiated this controversy and it's up to you to resolve it. You're acting quite childish, imo. I'm simply seeking an amicable solution. You are looking for a fight.

But it is more than that. You are purposely and completely disregarding the thread originator's intent for their thread. I don't think you'd appreciate another poster doing the same to a thread you started, so why continue to aggravate others in a thread so endearing to our members? Just because you can?

A rule is a rule; this there can be no disagreement about.

You want to change a long accepted RI rule of discussion?

Take it up with our moderator or Jeff. I wasted enough of my life trying to right your wrong.

Just goes to show that people who are oh so progressive in their politics can be pretty reactionary in their day-to-day life. The former finds a (mostly symbolic) expression in voting in the election circus every couple years, the latter has an influence every day on everyone they meet. My opinion :)

Oh my goodness! I have a side of the story, too, you know:)

If you met me in real life, you'd see I'm about as far from this characterization as one can be. I understand it's your opinion.

But I'm certainly not the reactionary, here. I just posted pictures on an image thread.

haha! No, I think I 'get it' pretty well.

Hopefully we can just get beyond this. The discussion's over as far as I'm concerned. We've both made our 'case.' I just wanted to say there's no hard feelings here.

I already said I'm sorry for 'snapping' at you whenever that was. I really didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

Dada i may question your reading comprehension and/or drawing skills but i doubt you're reactionary. That comment was aimed at iamwhoiam and all the others who were outraged at your semicaptioned images. Anyway, just goes to show forum quibbles really are a waste of time. Thankfully it's all over now!

Good lord! You seem to be able to initiate such quibbles. Next time identify your target better so there's no confusion. I also thought you were referring to dada.

Seems you've just begun another, with me. Have you read my comments to dada?

I question your reading comprehension, 0_0. It was dada who misinterpreted my comment, just as you have. Of course I'm reactionary. I have reflexes.

Try once more to understand, I did not call out dada for a rule violation, he like you, thought I had and he then reacted to it through his characters in several more cartoons.

Did you actually read what you quoted of my words? Obviously, you do not yet understand what I wrote.

It seemed to me that while misunderstanding my rule-breaking post, dada was the reactionary one, not me with my responses to his reactions that followed.

I passed on your comment earlier because I took it much as did dada. Clear as mud.

I also love having the truth be told, so I'm reacting now to your false statement about me. Thanks ever so much for sharing your opinion, 0_0.

Ah, I see. Well, that was before I had any coffee this morning, Takes a cup and a cigarette for my brain to get up to speed:)

---

So, this has been a learning experience for me. I've learned that about half a dozen RI board members are bothered enough by my silly pictures to say something about it, whether because they don't like them for one reason or another, or they feel they don't belong on the thread I've been posting them in.

One board member even sent me personal messages, calling me names like 'sociopath.' After three of those, I had to set up one of those rules that deletes personal messages from a specific board member as they come in. I didn't know you could do that. So there's another thing I learned.

Aesthetic criticisms, discussions and arguments as to why my silly pictures aren't in the spirit of the image thread, insults towards my pictures are welcome - I get a kick out of the colorful adjectives people call my stuff, you'll notice.

Personal attacks, not so much. I may be a monster, but even I have to draw the line somewhere. If you want to call me a sociopath or whatever, you're free to do it in public.

I've also learned that many more others either enjoy my pictures, or don't have a problem with them. That feels nice. I haven't counted how many, but it's been more than the ones that have a problem with them.

So for the few members that presume to 'speak for the board,' you should know: you're wrong to do it.

Now, I think I'm correct in my interpretation of the rules of the image thread. But I won't lord it over you, I'm not like that. And I don't presume to speak for the board. So I decided what I'll do.

Occasionally I'll post something in the image thread that some of you won't like or approve of. I'll try not to enjoy the thought of you rolling your eyes.

Most likely when I do this, it will be because I'm taking an image that someone else posted on the image thread, and modifying it. It makes sense contextually if I post the modified image on the same thread as the original.

I'm not making any hard and fast rules, but I'll try to keep it to a minimum. I'll also try to keep any words in the pictures to a minimum.

Of course there are one or two board members that will not be happy with this arrangement. I'm okay with that. The board member that went on a pm tirade made it very clear that they wouldn't be happy unless I disappeared.

So I'm not going to worry about pleasing the unpleasable.

Aside from that, I'll post most of my homemade, bad photoshop pictures on another thread. I don't want another image thread in General Discussion. I don't see the need for that.

So I resurrected a thread in the lounge titled 'Because we live in a surrealist sci-fi novel,' or something like that. I think the name is very open-ended, it could be a catch-all for much more than silly pictures.

You'll notice this means that not only am I being magnanimous here, but there won't even be another image thread on the main page to annoy anyone. All is chaos and disharmony, and everybody loves to visit the lounge.

See, I can be reasonable. I win, you win.

Merry Christmas from California

Heteromeles arbutifolia (/ˌhɛtᵻroʊˈmiːliːz ɑːrˌbjuːtᵻˈfoʊliə/;[6] more commonly /ˌhɛtəˈrɒməliːz/ by Californian botanists), commonly known as toyon, is a common perennial shrub native to extreme southwest Oregon,[citation needed] California, Baja California,[5] and British Columbia.[7] It is the sole species in the genus Heteromeles.

Toyon is a prominent component of the coastal sage scrub plant community, and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats.[8] It is also known by the common names Christmas berry[9] and California holly. Accordingly, "the abundance of this species in the hills above Los Angeles... gave rise to the name Hollywood."[10]

Several years ago I had a friend visit me for Christmas. We did not do much special for the holiday except to go on a "spooky" campground tour and pick toyon to decorate and for her to take home for family and friends. The walk was a Christmas morning surprise for my guest.

About 10 miles from my house there is what was once a National Forest campground. Nearly 30 years ago the Yurok Tribe convinced the US Forest Service that the campground was located on a sacred site. In response the campground was closed and the site turned over to the Tribe. The rest rooms and other modern wooden and other improvements were removed. Nothing much has occurred there since except every several years I visit, mainly for an easy stroll through the site as entertainment for a visitor.

The vegetation is mostly Douglas-fir, madrone, ponderosa pine, live oak, and toyon; the last three species less common locally except on droughty and rocky southern exposure soils near the River. A ground fire had gone through the campground not long before the campground was closed that opened the vegetation and the result was an expansion and flourishing of the toyon. The Tribe is not doing anything evident so the site, specifically the vegetation is returning to a more natural state but toyon enhanced. Over time without fire, the tree species will close in canopy and the toyon will die out from lack of sunlight and old age. Another fire would rejuvenate and result in new toyon seedlings. Now the toyon is in its prime in a spot where timing and other somewhat random items converged for toyon to reach splendor.

Why a "spooky" camp ground tour? First, there is the this site is abandoned because it is an "Indian sacred area" factor. Second, back in the 1930s many federal campgrounds were built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) and they are notable because of their stone work. This particular campground was an outstanding example. The Tribe removed improvements but did not disturb the stone work. So there are stone work stoves, pedestals for tables and benches, entrance pillars, and so on that are gradually melting into the soil (very slowly) but mostly into the vegetation. There is a lonely air of abandonment. Very pretty, especially when the toyon berries are at their best, Christmas time (and hence why toyon is alternatively called Christmas berry).

The Biggest Digital Map of the Cosmos Ever Made

Trilobites

By DENNIS OVERBYE DEC. 29, 2016

On the summit of Haleakala, a dormant volcano on the island of Maui in Hawaii, a telescope began clicking pictures of the night sky in 2010. Over the next four years, Pan-Starrs, short for Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, photographed the entire sky, as seen from Hawaii, 12 times in five colors of visible and infrared light.

In December, the astronomers who operate Pan-Starrs released the first results from their survey. Their big data universe lists the positions, colors and brightness of three billion stars, galaxies and other objects. It amounts to two petabytes of data, roughly equivalent to a billion selfies, according to a statement from the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy. All this information, the universe in a box, now resides in the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (named for Barbara A. Mikulski, the retiring Maryland senator and space champion) at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore where any astronomer can get access to it. In 2017, the Pan-Starrs team plans to produce a new catalog of how these things are moving and changing.

This was an exercise in more than just curiosity. A big goal of the project, run by an international consortium led by the University of Hawaii, is to discover moving objects like asteroids so that we can visit them and perhaps steer them away before they visit us, as well as discover supernovas and other rare violent events while they are still exploding.

Pan-Starrs is the biggest digital mapping effort yet done, but it is not the last. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope now being built in Chile by the National Science Foundation will eventually supersede it, surveying 37 billion galaxies and stars and producing 15 terabytes of data every night for 10 years once it is completed in 2022.

Wow wow.

Printing the full resolution version sounds like a worthy investment. Where will it be displayed?
