I went to a party once at Lothlorien, an orgy of food and drugs. What with people feeding each other goblets of mushroom tea and smearing liquid chocolate on each other, it was getting wild. Then somebody lost their footing on a floor slick with chocolate and champagne and slid backwards out the window! Soon the flashing light of an ambulance was flashing outside the window. That tamped down the party a few notches, for sure. My friend felt that was a manifestation of a desire to not blow out the roof.

Other intrepid travelers did blow out the roof at other times and wound up permanently with "Michel Allen incarnate spiritual master from Galactica, a God-conscious soul dedicated to serving humanity, God’s Comforter Spirit of truth, embodied on the planet since April 1947, as a soul from Galactic Headquarters".

I want Liberation but will pass on playing a bit part in somebody else's Space Opera- and also the unnecessary injuries.

While painting an outdoor signboard, Allen was suddenly enveloped in a bright purple and gold light, and found himself (the entity in the body, not the body itself) being transported up into what he later realized was a Galactic Mothership. Upon materializing onboard the spaceship, he appeared before a great Light. And a Voice spoke to him out of the Light, telling him that he was chosen to be the messenger who would fulfill the role of being the New World Comforter and channel of the Everlasting Gospel.

He was given the name Allen Michael, reflecting the truth that he is incarnate in a body to make Michael’s Stand with the holy people of the world.

He accepted the mission, and from that point onward he has been in direct telepathic contact with the Universal Mind of ETI – Extra Territorial Intelligence – channeling the energies of the Spirit of Truth through the spoken and written word, as well as in deeds done that will bring this world up to and through our planetary cosmic initiation into the long awaited Kingdom of God.

And so on. Allen Noonan sign-painter became Michel Allen incarnate spiritual master from Galactica, a God-conscious soul dedicated to serving humanity, God’s Comforter Spirit of truth, embodied on the planet since April 1947, as a soul from Galactic Headquarters.

The Barb voiced concern about Noonan and his group.

Berkeley Barb, March 19-25, 1971

The Barb detailed the flying saucer stuff, and then noted rather astutely that “Words known for their link to classical forms of fascism and totalitarianism pervade the One World World doctrine.” The Barb cautioned that “maybe people ought to know before digging too much on the Messiah’s newly-opening place.”

The One World Family left Berkeley in the mid 1970s. The commune houses were sold to the University and now house the Lothlorien student housing coop.

It is vegetarian. Clothing optional. Decisions by consensus. Middle Earth friendly.

I am resisting impulses to judge. I can give Lothlorien a pass, but it is just plain hard not to see One World Family as delusional. But – they didn’t hurt anybody.

Okay. Exhale.

Hyper-associative States, Synchronicities, Isomorphisms, & The Universal Pattern

James Kent

Chapter 16: Psychedelic Information Theory

If there's one thing the human brain loves, its ordered patterns. The brain likes audio patterns (rhythms); visual patterns (stripes, mandalas, mosaics); syntactic patterns (language, logical formulas, melodies); interpretive patterns (charts, graphs, symbols); metabolic patterns (respiration, hormonal pulses, circadian rhythms, action potentials); behavioral patterns (routines, habits); etc. In fact, it is not a stretch to say the brain's entire function is ordered pattern recognition, memory, and recall. That's it. The task of pattern recognition, memory, and recall describes our every basic organic function from the genetic level on up. This ordered pattern construction works both ways along the atomic scale: Humans are created out of ordered patterns of nucleotides (DNA), which arose out of conditions within ordered patterns of water and minerals settling on the surface of the earth, moving in ordered revolutions around the sun, spinning in the ordered web of the greater cosmos, which was itself condensed out of distributed patterns of energy spreading across a vast expanse at high speeds. But in addition to pattern recognition, pattern memory, and pattern recall, humans can also create new patterns that are uniquely their own. This is the essence of genetics, language, art, science, invention, and cultural evolution. Like DNA, we can absorb patterns, remix them, and reproduce them in new ways, and we do this by applying abstract associations between patterns to create meaningful connections

Synchronicities

A synchronicity can be defined as "meaningful coincidence" between similar patterns recurring in close temporal proximity. A classic example of a synchronicity is thinking about someone you haven't talked to in a while, and then having them phone you up out of the blue some short time later. In this instance the quality of the synchronicity can be mapped in terms of probability and coincidence. The longer it has been since you have talked to that person (say one to ten years), the lower the probability they will call for no reason; the shorter the time span between your thought of them and the phone call (say one minute to a few hours) the, the higher the coincidence rate. Thus, when you have low probability patterns suddenly recurring out of the blue with a high coincidence rate (close temporal proximity), the greater the impact of synchronicity for the person experiencing it. The synchronicity may be amplified if the coincidence is sparked by a third random event which appears to have nothing to do with anything (no contextual relevance) on the surface. For example, say your friend's name is Bob, and you happen to be eating a bag of "Bob's Maine-Style Potato Chips," (which you picked out of the blue, for no special reason), and while you are eating them your mind wanders to your old friend Bob, who then calls on the phone. This experience could also be called a "coincidence," but when these coincidences are parsed through our logical analysis filters, the spontaneous recurrence of specific pattern of data multiple times within two or more separate domains (Bob:Chips, Bob:Memory, Bob:Phone) over a short duration create the most meaningful synchronicities.

Within the context of psychedelic activation of the cortex, the tendency to make meaningful connections out of even wider ranges of random data becomes amplified, and in this state even the most unrelated bits of perception can be pieced together into one large meaningful coincidence. This state can lead to paranoia (anxiety or fear of being watched, followed, trapped, manipulated, persecuted, etc.) or the thrill of discovery (Gnostic bliss, esoteric enlightenment, occult unveiling, mystical revelations, etc.). There are many schizophrenics who receive hidden messages from meaningful coincidences, and at the most extreme end of this disorder the data that is parsed is perceived as a coded transmission from God, or the Devil, aliens, ECCO (John Lilly's Earth Coincidence Control Office), or whatever supernatural other they believe is sending them secret signals. However, the encoded messages and hidden meanings which arise from these states are meaningful only to the people who experience them, and often sound perfectly crazy when they try to explain it to anyone else. And upon closer examination it would appear that these secret messages are not actually coming from an external source, but are actually being pieced together from "random noise" via an excitation of activity in the syntactical pattern-matching routines of their own temporal lobes.

So does that mean that ECCO doesn't exist? Probably. Does that mean synchronicities don't exist? No, they certainly exist, but we make the synchronicities in our head based on the connections we form between patterns in our neural tissue. Our brain is wired to parse synchronicities for a reason, so the art of finding meaningful coincidences between things has definite survival value. In fact, the ability to find meaningful connections between otherwise random events are the foundations of both deductive reasoning (logic and science) and spiritual belief (faith and intuition). The concepts of coincidence, probability, luck, and fate are intimately tied into our notions of self, God, spirituality, and the "existential meaning" of being. Hence any object which amplifies the levels of meaningful connections derived from otherwise random data (such as psychedelics) will be perceived as spiritual in nature, possibly even supernatural in origin (food of the Gods anyone?). Yet it is my assertion that these are not supernatural powers imparted by a spiritual force, they are merely our normal everyday powers amplified by a chemical excitation of the associative cortices. And to go back to my "Logic Mill" metaphor, the quality of the "meaningful connections" produced in the psychedelic state will vary with the dose range. At lower doses the meaningful connections and synchronicities are still hung on a logical-yet-loosely-associative framework; at higher doses the meaningful connections start to loose touch with actual reality, and spin off into illogical and paradoxical associations based solely on the user's own internal ideation. Both of these events can be extremely "meaningful" in the emotional and existential sense, but the quality of "meaning" produced is dependent on how well these new associations can be integrated into the user's pre-existing ontology upon returning to sobriety.

Interesting that this 2005 piece nicely seems to support Robin Carhart-Harris's recent findings about associative semantics and LSD.....

LSD and associative thinking
OCTOBER 1, 2016 / THEPSYCHEDELICSCIENTIST

Earlier this year, researchers at Imperial showed us the first ever detailed images of the brain on LSD. The images showed that LSD massively increased connectivity in the brain, freeing it from its usual boundaries. Now researchers are starting to piece together how LSD breaks down these boundaries of normal consciousness, leading us to an understanding of the workings of the mind.

In a recent study from the same UCL group, funded by the psychedelic research charity the Beckley Foundation, researchers looked into how LSD affects our ability to recognise simple objects. The researchers recruited ten participants for their study, almost all of whom were experienced with psychedelic drugs. The subjects attended two experimental sessions: one where they were injected with LSD (40-80μg), and one where they were injected with a placebo. During both placebo and LSD sessions, participants took an object recognition test. They were shown images of simple objects like pieces of clothing or vehicles. As soon as an image appeared, the participants had to name the object as quickly and accurately as they could.

The researchers found that when the subjects were given LSD, they were more likely to make mistakes and name the objects incorrectly; such as saying “foot” when the image was showing a shoe. They were especially more likely to make these mistakes when the images were all from the same category, like body-parts. This showed that LSD was increasing associative thinking in the subjects; highly related images started to become more difficult to distinguish.

After taking LSD, it’s harder to tell apart objects from the same category, like body-parts

This study suggests that LSD puts our brains in a state similar to that found in dreaming, where thoughts become less logical and more associative. Experienced users of LSD may already be well aware of this; typical reports include mentions of enhanced associations and connections, and often dream-like features.

The increase in connectivity produced in the brain by LSD is amazingly complex, and results in profound changes in cognition. This recent study has shown that part of this connectivity must affect how we process images and language. Hopefully this study is only one of many that will attempt to decode the effects of LSD on all aspects of consciousness.

You will not believe that in India there were at one time, two thousand years ago, two hundred thousand followers of a special group of tantras. They lived naked. Couples used one gown, just one loose gown around both, made of a special silk which prevented the radiation of any kind of energy from going out or in. They would go for begging or anything but they would remain together, naked, in their gown.

They were doing a great experiment, of melting and mixing the female and the male bio-electricity. Because the very meeting of this bio-electricity can help you to go into deep meditation without much effort in fighting with your thoughts. There were one hundred thousand couples and Raja Bhoj, the king in those days, was so furious - "This is destroying our whole morality, this is corrupting our children. Children will see and they will ask, what kind of people are these? - naked in one gown.... These people will corrupt our whole religion and tradition."

Bhoj decided to kill all of them. One hundred thousand couples - that means two hundred thousand people - were killed all over the country, burned alive. Not a single couple was left alive; their literature was burned, their temples were burned. Never before or after has any tradition been so brutally destroyed, so inhumanely destroyed.

But when you bring up the subject of sex, immediately you annoy all the people who are in power because nobody who is in power wants people to live to their optimum sexually. They want you to live your minimum sexually because at the minimum you can be enslaved. At the maximum, you are so powerful, you are so intelligent - you are a rock and you cannot be destroyed. Whoever tries to destroy you will be destroyed.

Wilhelm Reich will have a revival because what he was doing was absolutely scientific. No Christianity can prevent it, no government can prevent it. And perhaps... I have so many sannyasins educated in psychology, in psychoanalysis, in analytical psychology and different schools - perhaps a few of my sannyasins will start working on Wilhelm Reich.

I can't claim to understand the nature of all the conspiracies within the Rajneesh/Osho realm, other than that they included drug smuggling, biological warfare, currency shenanigans and various things- not to mention guru cultism- but I know that some scamming just goes more commonly with hippied-out constituencies, as say Divine Light Mission and maybe, ISCKON and Ananda Marga (though lots was fomented from the top down in all those groups). That said, I'm not sure how much Rajneesh/Osho did or did not know about the serious skullduggery going on.

I do know that all the sexual activity made for many happy people at Rajneeshpuram- somebody told me about walking through the forest where there was a selection of men with erections to choose from (maybe the golden days?). I'm all good with being sex positive, celebrating the sacred slut (ethically, of course), and I believe Rajneesh community tried, so good on them for that.

I should add though that Hindu Tantrism is not at all the same as Tibetan, that both are conflated with S-E-X in the popular imagination but that is not really a fully accurate picture. Also, Tibetan sexual practices (as well as some Taoist in their own way) strike me as vampiric, i.e. too much older, powerful dude using young babes for rejuvenation and occult power. When such people come over to the Europeanized world there is yet another layer added of abuse and exploitation by teacher of student.

All that said, I'm intrigued by Wilhelm Reich. I think he is too often written off as a nut. He may or may not have lost the plot by the end of his life but he really was on to something, too. How to parse all that out, I'm not completely sure but his work on Sexual Liberation, Fascism and the Unconscious certainly deserves continued attention.

The mutant commodification of Tantra as "tantric sex" is a profound embarrassment for all parties. Sexual union practices are very high level, if I understand correctly and much of the male/female imagery has a whole retinue of meanings. The singular manner of their interpretation says far more about the interpreter than the interpretant. I've spoken with a number of people who've participated in either/both the Guru/student and consort relationships (sexual and otherwise) and the "vampiric" characterization does not fit at all with what I've heard.

I tend to place Reich alongside PK Dick and Artaud, to some degree. Big intuiters who made contact with the whole picture (as it were) but whose being and coherence disintegrated enough along the way to undermine their credibility. Clearly Reich was onto some things. His influence on Deleuze/Guattari is no small marker, IMHO, of a quiet lineage that has been carried on by a whole mess of successive interlocutors. Not to mention his role as forefather of modern energy psychology and thusly trauma healing. Somewhere in this thread, another poster characterized the void/ether differencing as a critical ontological hinge between Hinduism/Buddhism. I'm struck in reading Osho's comments that Reich's decision that Orgone was stuff seems, at least chronologically, linked to his spiral into madness/diffusion.

Yes, I will definitely admit that teacher/student sex can be consensual and positive for all concerned, including in the "Tantric" realm. It is impossible to ignore the creepy side too, especially from the standpoint of a western/feminist/anti-authoritarian perspective.

As to Reich, yes I agree with your comments and want to know more about his work, generally. As with Holotropic Breathwork and LSD crystal, he can be abused- and I have seen it in action...

Note AD that that is an exerpt from the linked web page not my writing.

At that building of flats on Durant and the people I knew that lived there and who we partied together, folks would congregate on the flat gravel rook with the good view of San Francisco Bay. We would get high and watch the sunset and some including people that no longer or never live there would go to that roof to sunbath clothing optional on sunny days. There was a walk through pantry off each large kitchen / dining area that went to a wooden staircase to the basement so one could readily pass into the other flat on the floor or go up or down the stairs to other flats or the roof or to the basement where there was a large boiler for the steam heated building.

Once we were having a party with our out of town guests and Durant social set and the guys were getting high on the roof and the women were busy in our kitchen making what were referred to ass "fucker cookies"; marijuana cookies made with marijuana detritus boiled into butter for the oil component and finely ground bud gently sauteed for an hour or more to blend into the dough. A random smear among the women turned into a strip down to underwear (panties) and tribal-like body and face painting with green cookie dough to surprise the guys as they trudged upstairs to the roof to our surprise. Good times.

Elsewhere at RI I related that in junior high and high school I had previously attended two widely different boarding schools in the late 60s San Francisco area, and specifically noted at the more liberal we had several Esalen guided weekend encounter groups that occurred specifically because the parents of two students were on staff at Esalen and maybe because the founder of the then new school had been a Ford Foundation VP and like Esalen, both institutions had Ford Foundation backing in there provenance. At one of the Esalen sessions several students had taken lsd and one fell and had a large colored swelling on his forehead and he received no medial care but left the session to recover in his room.

Kids were not well supervised or even lead into risk by the adults I was fortunate but other kids were casualties of those "good times". My parents were clueless about what I had been exposed to and when it came to exposure in my late teens resulted in my most difficult times with my parents because there was so little common understanding. I have mentioned that we went to rock concerts and sometimes students took lsd on these field trips and also some supervising adults also partook or ignored what was happening. As a teen, I thought this was cool. What I did see at both schools is that when bad things happened they were glossed over or covered up and at times students were scapegoated and the adults who were paid not only teach but care for the young in the specific instances avoided personal cost or had minor impact. Another example was there sex occurred between students and staff; on discovery the adult was sometimes fired but just as often the student left the school and never to my knowledge was there ever any counseling.

Yes, PufPuf93, I noticed that you did not write the above. For whatever it is worth, there is a Vice article on the recent Dead shows in Chicago a bit upthread and I noticed the writer said he was invited on board a "Messiah bus" that sounded like it could be the Allen Michael saucer cult that you referred to. I'm not sure if they venture out of Santa Rosa to do recruitment much, but I wondered.

As to the schools you went to, I noticed that you mentioned sketchy sexual behavior by teachers previously, and that's a shame. My sense is that people were relatively clueless about Rape Culture back then. I stayed at what had been a flower power high school that had morphed into a commune and it was always on the map of the psychedelic world, but that's another thing.

I don't think that most of that drug culture was nefarious but it does seem that, at minimum, it was a target for spooky types such as Ron Stark- beyond that some of the conspiracy was likely of the LIHOP kind as well as actively protecting certain drug networks and drug dealers. Mostly though, just people seeking a better way.

Also, Puf, I know we've mentioned OTO stuff previously and it sounds like you got to miss the worst tweakers in Berkeley, which is all for the good. Do you have any further thoughts on the suggestions by a few of "spooky" infiltration of those circles?

Here is a more nuanced counterpoint to overly simplistic Fascism=sexual repression claims:

http://www.leninology.co.uk/2017/01/the ... erego.html

The fascist superego

posted by Richard Seymour

There is a traditional way of talking about the fascist superego as, essentially: monarchical, masculine, militaristic. It is the censorship of the id, and the protection the ego from its drives which are canalised into minimal reproductive activity. It is the repression of sexuality and the feminine. Whereas the modern, rational ego would negotiate with the id to allow pleasure its say, the premodern superego can only treat the claims of the id as a threat to be crushed.

But if we take seriously the idea that there is an incipient fascist potential in Trumpism, we might want to query this conception, or at least update it. The description above sounds a lot more like a Christian reactionary like Ted Cruz, or perhaps a right-wing Islamist, than a right-wing populist like Trump. The man who brags about pussy-grabbing and 'smart' predatory practices, whose garish casinos and towers exude sumptuary extravagance, is many things, but not a puritan. Indeed, there's a sense in which he is more permissive than his rivals, allowing people to feel less guilty about bigotry, back-stabbing, ecological despoliation, casual sexual assault, and hoarding of property.

In fact, even the Nazi regime, despite its sexually repressive propaganda, ran a voluptuary ship, encouraging young men and women and boys and girls involved in the Nazi movement to engage in pre-marital sex. The rate of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancies soared. Despite the formal disapproval of sex workers, moreover, it encouraged and protected the existence of regulated brothels and red-light districts on grounds of national health. In crude propaganda terms, fascism extols heroic self-sacrifice over pleasurable indulgence, and directs all of the surplus libidinal energy into paraphilia (fetishism of uniforms and medals), aggressivity (war) and father worship (fuhrer). In its practical record, fascism needed people to fuck for pleasure, as if for the collective pleasure of the nation.

From a metapsychological viewpoint, the traditional way of talking about the fascist superego is dependent on the precepts of 'ego psychology' in which the health of the patient depends on the ego being protected against a superego which might otherwise squash the poor ego. Of course, Lacan - in rejecting ego psychology, in claiming that the ego is already too strong, too mortifying in its grip, too voracious in its cannibalisation of the subject - famously assigned the superego to the side of jouissance. Far from crushing your pleasures, it orders you to enjoy.

In the juridical sense, to enjoy is to exercise a right, say, to property. Droit du seigneur, for example, refers to a supposed right of feudal lords to have sexual access to subordinate women on their wedding night. In this sense, one's body can come to be inhabited by someone else’s enjoyment, marked as such like someone else’s property. If you're the sort of person who would rather paint than go out on a date, would prefer to go for a quiet walk than attend a raucous party, would rather watch television than fuck, then you can imagine the kind of superego bullying that would make you feel weak and pathetic for such choices.

The intimidation that says you have to be enjoying yourself right now (because it's the Olympic Games, or the Queen's birthday, or your birthday, or Christmas), and that you must be enjoying yourself in this particular way (socially, ideally lubricated with libations), is hardly 'fascist'. But it's easy to see it being recruited for a fascist superego.

It makes one wonder if the 'fascist strongman' of the future will not be quite extravagantly on the side of (a certain idea of) pleasure and enjoyment, flashing expensive cars and clothes, rioting in public 'debauchery', etc. It will be the promotion of 'vigorous' and very socially regimented kinds of pleasure. It will be 'transgressive'. It will consider withdrawal from these pleasures small, weak and pathetic. It will harness a form of ruthless competitiveness over who is enjoying more than who, to its side. (Isn't one of the possible functions of social media self-display to wage that competition? To say, "I'm very visibly having fun, and thus winning"?)

One could try to respond to this by withdrawing from pleasure, but that would simply mean narrowing one's mind and becoming depressed. (Narrow-mindedness might, in fact, be a giveaway of covert depression -- especially among the narrow-mindedly optimistic.) But the answer to the fascist recruitment of one's jouissance, to the bullying fascist superego, might just be to reject intimidation - to figure out for yourself what you might enjoy, and doggedly pursue it. And if you happen to be the sort of person who enjoys what to others is routine, unadventurous, banal and unheroic, whose fondest pleasure is crafting knitwear memes or sending certain Tumblr users shots of your genitalia, you might refuse to feel small and pathetic as a result.

Re: Tantra-Induced Delusional Syndrome ("TIDS")

This is a political interpretation of Reich from the standpoint of the UK libertarian socialist group Solidarity:

Maurice Brinton

The Irrational in Politics

1975

Let us consider for a moment - and not through rose-tinted spectacles - the average middle-aged working-class voter today (it matters little in this respect whether he votes "Conservative" or "Labour"). He is probably hierarchy-conscious, xenophobic, racially-prejudiced, pro-monarchy, pro-capital-punishment, pro-law-and-order, anti-demonstrator, anti-longhaired students and anti-dropout. He is almost certainly sexually repressed (and hence an avid, if vicarious, consumer of the distorted sexuality endlessly depicted in the pages of the News of the World). No "practical" Party (aiming at power through the ballot-box) would ever dream of appealing to him through the advocacy of wage equality, workers' management of production, racial integration, penal reform, abolition of the monarchy, dissolution of the police, sexual freedom for adolescents or the legalization of pot. Anyone proclaiming this kind of "transitional programme" would not only fail to get support but would probably be considered some kind of a nut.

But there is an even more important fact. Anyone trying to discuss matters of this kind will almost certainly meet not only with disbelief but also that positive hostility that often denotes latent anxiety.[6] One doesn't meet this kind of response if one argues various meaningless or downright ludicrous propositions. Certain subjects are clearly emotionally loaded. Discussing them generates peculiar resistances that are hardly amenable to rational argument.

It is the purpose of this pamphlet to explore the nature and cause of these resistances and to point out that they are not innate but socially determined. (If they were innate, there would be no rational or socialist perspective whatsoever.) We will be led to conclude that these resistances are the result of a long-standing conditioning, going back to earliest childhood, and that this conditioning is mediated through the whole institution of the patriarchal family. The net result is a powerful reinforcement and perpetuation of the dominant ideology and the mass production of individuals with slavery built into them, individuals ready at a later stage to accept the authority of schoolteacher, priest, employer and politician (and to endorse the prevailing pattern of "rationality"). Understanding this collective character structure gives one new insight into the frequently "irrational" behaviour of individuals or social groups and into the "irrational in politics". It might also provide mankind with new means of transcending these obstacles.

3. The Ignored Area and the Traditional Left

This whole area has been largely ignored by Marxist revolutionaries. The appropriate tool for understanding this aspect of human behaviour - namely psychoanalysis - was only developed in the first two decades of this century. Freud's major contribution to knowledge (the investigation of causality in psychological life, the description of infantile and juvenile sexuality, the honest statement of fact that there was more to sex than procreation, the recognition of the influence of unconscious instinctual drives - and of their repression - in determining behaviour patterns, the description of how such drives are repressed in accordance with the prevailing social dictates, the analysis of the consequences of this repression in terms of symptoms, and in general "the consideration of the unofficial and unacknowledged sides of human life")[7] only became part of our social heritage several decades after Marx's death. Certain reactionary aspects of classical psychoanalysis (the "necessary" adaptation of the instinctual life to the requirements of a society whose class nature was never explicitly proclaimed, the "necessary" sublimation of "undisciplined" sexuality in order to maintain "social stability", "civilization" and the cultural life of society,[8] the theory of the death instinct, etc.) were only to be transcended later still by the revolutionary psychoanalysis of Wilhelm Reich[9] and others.

Reich set out to elaborate a social psychology based on both Marxism and psychoanalysis. His aim was to explain how ideas arose in men's minds, in relation to the real condition of their lives, and how in turn such ideas influenced human behaviour. There was clearly a discrepancy between the material conditions of the masses and their conservative outlook. No appeal to psychology was necessary to understand why a hungry man stole bread or why workers, fed up with being pushed around, decided to down tools. What social psychology had to explain, however, "is not why the starving individual steals or why the exploited individual strikes, but why the majority of starving individuals do not steal, and the majority of exploited individuals do not strike". Classical sociology could "satisfactorily explain a social phenomenon when human thinking and acting serve a rational purpose, when they serve the satisfaction of needs and directly express the economic situation. It fails, however, when human thinking and acting contradict the economic situation, when, in other words, they are irrational".[10]

What was new, at the level of revolutionary theory, in this kind of concern? Traditional Marxists had always underestimated - and still underestimate - the effect of ideas on the material structure of society. Like parrots, they repeat that economic infrastructure and ideological superstructures mutually interact. But then they proceed to look upon what is essentially a dialectical, two-way relationship as an almost exclusively one-sided process (economic "base" determining what goes on in the realm of ideas). They have never sought concretely to explain how a reactionary political doctrine could gain a mass foothold and later set a whole nation in motion (how, for instance, in the early 1930s, Nazi ideology rapidly spread throughout all layers of German society, the process including the now well documented massive desertion of thousands of Communist militants to the ranks of the Nazis).[11] In the words of a "heretical" Marxist, Daniel Guérin, author of one of the most sophisticated social, economic and psychological interpretations of the fascist phenomenon:

"Some people believe themselves very 'Marxist' and very 'materialist' when they neglect human factors and only concern themselves with material and economic facts. They accumulate figures, statistics, percentages. They study with extreme precision the deep causes of social phenomena. But because they don't follow with similar precision how these causes are reflected in human consciousness, living reality eludes them. Because they are only interested in material factors, they understand absolutely nothing about how the deprivations endured by the masses are converted into aspirations of a religious type."[12]

Neglecting this subjective factor in history, such "Marxists" - and they constitute today the overwhelming majority of the species - cannot explain the lack of correlation between the economic frustrations of the working class and its lack of will to put an end to the system which engenders them. They do not grasp the fact that when certain beliefs become anchored in the thinking (and influence the behaviour) of the masses, they become themselves material facts of history.

What was it therefore, Reich asked, which in the real life of the oppressed limited their will to revolution? His answer was that the working class was readily influenced by reactionary and irrational ideas because such ideas fell on fertile soil.[13] For the average Marxist, workers were adults who hired their labour power to capitalists and were exploited by them. This was correct as far as it went. But one had to take into account all aspects of working class life if one wanted to understand the political attitudes of the working class. This meant one had to recognize some obvious facts, namely that the worker had a childhood, that he was brought up by parents themselves conditioned by the society in which they lived, that he had a wife and children, sexual needs, frustrations, and family conflicts. Overcrowding, physical fatigue, financial insecurity, and back-street abortions rendered these problems particularly acute in working-class circles. Why should such factors be neglected in seeking to explain working-class behaviour? Reich sought to develop a total analysis which would incorporate such facts and attach the appropriate importance to them.

4. The Process of Conditioning

In learning to obey their parents, children learn obedience in general. This deference learned in the family setting will manifest itself whenever the child faces a "superior" in later life. Sexual repression - by the already sexually repressed parents[14] - is an integral part of the conditioning process.

Rigid and obsessional parents start by imposing rigid feeding times on the newborn. They then seek to impose regular potting habits on infants scarcely capable of maintaining the sitting posture. They are obsessed by food, bowels, and the "inculcating of good eating habits". A little later they will start scolding and punishing their masturbating five-year-old. At times they will even threaten their male children with physical mutilation.[15] (They cannot accept that children at that [age] - or any other age for that matter - should derive pleasure from sex.) They are horrified at their discovery of sexual exhibitionism between consenting juniors in private. Later still, they will warn their twelve-year-old boys of the dire dangers of "real masturbation". They will watch the clock to see what time their fifteen-year-old daughters get home, or search their son's pockets for contraceptives. For most parents, the child-rearing years are one long, anti-sexual saga.

How does the child react to this? He adapts by trial and error. He is scolded when he masturbates. He adapts by repressing his sexuality. Attempted affirmation of sexual needs then takes the form of revolt against parental authority. But this revolt is again punished. Obedience is achieved through punishment. Punishment also ensures that forbidden activities are invested with feelings of guilt[16] which may be (but more often aren't) sufficient to inhibit them.[17]

The anxiety associated with the fulfilment of sexual needs becomes part of the anxiety associated with all rebellious thoughts or actions (sexuality and all manifestations of rebelliousness are both indiscriminately curbed by the "educators"). The child gradually comes to suppress needs whose acting out would incur parental displeasure or result in punishment, and ends up afraid of his sexual drives and of his tendencies to revolt. At a later stage another kind of equilibrium is achieved which has been described as "being torn between desires that are repugnant to my conscience and a conscience repugnant to my desires".[18] The individual is "marked like a road map from head to toes by his repressions".[19]

In the little boy, early repression is associated with an identification with the paternal image. In a sense, this is a prefiguration of the later "country or party". The father, in this sense, is the representative of the state and of authority in the family nucleus.

To neutralize his sexual needs and his rebellion against his parents, the child develops "overcompensations". The unconscious revolt against the father engenders servility. The fear of sexuality engenders prudery. We all know those old maids of both sexes, ever on the alert against any hint of sexuality among children. Their preoccupations are obviously determined by deep fears of their own sexuality. The reluctance of most revolutionaries to discuss these topics is similarly motivated.

Another frequent by-product of sexual repression is to split sexuality into its component parts. Tenderness is given a positive value, whereas sensuality is condemned. A dissociation between affection and sexual pleasure is seen in many male adolescents and leads them to adopt double sexual standards. They idealize some girl on a pedestal while seeking to satisfy their sexual needs with other girls whom they openly or subconsciously despise.

The road to a healthy sex life for adolescents is blocked by both external and internal obstacles. The external obstacles (difficulty in finding an undisturbed place, difficulty in escaping from family surveillance, etc.) are obvious enough. The internal (psychological) obstacles may, at times, be severe enough to influence the perception of the sexual need. The two kinds of obstacles (internal and external) mutually reinforce one another. External factors consolidate sexual repression and the sexual repression predisposes to the influence of the external factors. The family is the hub of this vicious circle.

However apparently successful the repression, the repressed material is, of course, still there. But it is now running in subterranean channels. Having accepted a given set of "cultural" values, the individual must now defend himself against anything that might disrupt the painfully established equilibrium. He has constantly to mobilize part of his psychological potentialities against the "disturbing" influences. In addition to neuroses and psychoses the "energy" expended in this constant repression results in difficulties in thought and concentration, in a diminution of awareness and probably in some impairment of mental capacity. "Inability to concentrate" is perhaps the most common of neurotic symptoms.

According to Reich, the

"suppression of the natural sexuality in the child, particularly of its genital sexuality, makes the child apprehensive, shy, obedient, afraid of authority, 'good' and 'adjusted' in the authoritarian sense; it paralyzes the rebellious forces because any rebellion is laden with anxiety; it produces, by inhibiting sexual curiosity and sexual thinking in the child, a general inhibition of thinking and of critical faculties. In brief, the goal of sexual repression is that of producing an individual who is adjusted to the authoritarian order and who will submit to it in spite of all misery and degradation ... The result is fear of freedom, and a conservative, reactionary mentality. Sexual repression aids political reaction, not only through this process which makes the mass individual passive and unpolitical, but also by creating in his structure an interest in actively supporting the authoritarian order."[20]

When a child's upbringing has been completed the individual has acquired something more complex and harmful than a simple obedience response to those in authority. He has developed a whole system of reactions, regressions, thoughts, rationalizations, which form a character structure adapted to the authoritarian social system. The purpose of education - both East and West - is the mass production of robots of this kind who have so internalized social constraints that they submit to them automatically.

Psychologists and psychiatrists have written pages about the medical effects of sexual repression.[21] Reich however constantly reiterated its social function, exercised through the family. The purpose of sexual repression was to anchor submission to authority and the fear of freedom into people's "character armour". The net result was the reproduction, generation after generation, of the basic conditions necessary for the manipulation and enslavement of the masses.

Re: Tantra-Induced Delusional Syndrome ("TIDS")

Last night somebody told me about working at a weird Tibetan restaurant in Bloomington, Indiana founded under the current Dalai Lama's eldest brother (who was involved with the CIA-backed guerrilla movement). Besides serving really skanky food to ignorant "Americans", the back kitchen was staffed by Tibetans fresh from India who spoke little-to-no English. Nothing wrong with that per se, but he also said they were gun nuts, loved to see pictures of automatic weapons and to shoot high power weapons endlessly at the local gun range.

Just an interesting aside, but with regards to Tibetan Tantrism, it would be cool if the boss hog lamas decided to read more Audre Lorde:

Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power

The principal horror of any system which defines the good in terms of profit rather than in terms of human need, or which defines human need to the exclusion of the psychic and emotional components of that need - the principal horror of such a system is that it robs our work of its erotic value, its erotic power and life appeal and fulfillment. Such a system reduces work to a travesty of necessities, a duty by which we earn bread or oblivion for ourselves and those we love. But this is tantamount to blinding a painter and then telling her to improve her work, and to enjoy the act of painting. It is not only next to impossible, it is also profoundly cruel.

As women, we need to examine the ways in which our world can be truly different. I am speaking here of the necessity for reassessing the quality of all the aspects of our lives and of our work, and of how we move toward and through them.

The very word erotic comes from the Greek word eros, the personification of love in all its aspects - born of Chaos, and personifying creative power and harmony. When I speak of the erotic, then, I speak of it as an assertion of the lifeforce of women; of that creative energy empowered, the knowledge and use of which we are now reclaiming in our language, our history, our dancing, our loving, our work, our lives.

There are frequent attempts to equate pornography and eroticism, two diametrically opposed uses of the sexual. Because of these attempts, it has become fashionable to separate the spiritual (psychic and emotional) from the political, to see them as contradictory or antithetical. "What do you mean, a poetic revolutionary, a meditating gunrunner?" In the same way, we have attempted to separate the spiritual and the political is also false, resulting from an incomplete attention to our erotic knowledge. For the bridge which connects them is formed by the erotic - the sensual - those physical, emotional, and psychic expressions of what is deepest and strongest and richest within each of us, being shared: the passions of love, in its deepest meanings.

Beyond the superficial, the considered phrase, "It feels right to me," acknowledges the strength of the erotic into a true knowledge, for what that means is the first and most powerful guiding light toward any understanding. And understanding is a handmaiden which can only wait upon, or clarify, that knowledge, deeply born. The erotic is the nurturer or nursemaid of all our deepest knowledge.

The erotic functions for me in several ways, and the first is in providing the power which comes from sharing deeply any pursuit with another person. The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them, and lessens the threat of their difference.

Another important way in which the erotic connection functions is the open and fearless underlining of my capacity for joy, in the way my body stretches to music and opens into response, harkening to its deepest rhythms so every level upon which I sense also opens to the erotically satisfying experience whether it is dancing, building a bookcase, writing a poem, or examining an idea.

That self-connection shared is a measure of the joy which I know myself to be capable of feeling, a reminder of my capacity for feeling. And that deep and irreplaceable knowledge of my capacity for joy comes to demand from all of my life that it be lived within the knowledge that such satisfaction is possible, and does not have to be called marriage, nor god, nor an afterlife.

This is one reason why the erotic is so feared, and so often relegated to the bedroom alone, when it is recognized at all. For once we begin to feel deeply all the aspects of our lives, we begin to demand from ourselves and from our life-pursuits that they feel in accordance with that joy which we know ourselves to be capable of. Our erotic knowledge empowers us, becomes a lens through which we scrutinize all aspects of our existence, forcing us to evaluate those aspects honestly in terms of their relative meaning within our lives. And this is a grave responsibility, projected from within each of us, not to settle for the convenient, the shoddy, the conventionally expected, nor the merely safe.

During World War II, we bought sealed plastic packets of white, uncolored margarine, with a tiny, intense pellet of yellow coloring perched like a topaz just inside the clear skin of the bag. We would leave the margarine out for a while to soften, and then we would pinch the little pellet to break it inside the bag, releasing the rich yellowness into the soft pale mass of margarine. Then taking it carefully between our fingers, we would knead it gently back and forth, over and over, until the color had spread throughout the whole pound bag of margarine, thoroughly coloring it.

I find the erotic such a kernel within myself. When released from its intense and constrained pellet, it flows through and colors my life with a kind of energy that heightens and sensitizes and strengthens all my experience.

We have been raised to fear the yes within ourselves, our deepest cravings. But, once recognized, those which do not enhance our future lose their power and can be altered. The fear of our deepest cravings keeps them suspect and indiscriminately powerful, for to suppress any truth is to give it strength beyond endurance. The fear that we cannot grow beyond whatever distortions we may find within ourselves keeps us docile and loyal and obedient, externally defined, and leads us to accept many facets of our own oppression as women.

When we live outside ourselves, and by that I mean on external directives only rather than from our internal knowledge and needs, when we live away from those erotic guides from within ourselves, then our lives are limited by external and alien forms, and we conform to the needs of a structure that is not based on human need, let alone an individual's. But when we begin to live from within outward, in touch with the power of the erotic within ourselves, and allowing that power to inform and illuminate our actions upon the world around us, then we begin to be responsible to ourselves in the deepest sense. For as we begin to recognize our deepest feelings, we begin to give up, of necessity, being satisfied with suffering, and self-negation, and with the numbness which so often seems like the only alternative in our society. Our acts against oppression become integral with self, motivated and empowered from within.

I don't follow. This seems very much in line with Tantric teachings, no?

I would say that Audre Lorde's sentiment is consonant with westernized popular culture practices of "sacred sexuality" that draw on (especially but not only Indian) esoteric sexual traditions.

It seems less consonant with the actual practices of asian lamas and others who may use a much younger and/or less powerful female sexually, whether for occult or carnal purposes. That said, big mucky-mucks from Asia have not cornered the market on this- blurring the lines in this way between business and pleasure is a well-worn path of western teachers and occult leaders, too.

Sexuality as an aid to meditation or for occult power is not the question, it is the use and abuse of one's fellows...
