Precisely what would be the point of me "making an effort to engage in discussing the topic posted", when the disingenuous solipsist who started the topic has placed me -- and almost every other poster on this (former) Discussion Board -- "on ignore"?

How do you know AD has you and almost every other poster on ignore?

I don't think abolishing the ignore function would change that person's posting habits. Maybe just ask AD to limit the numbers of posts per day or something.

I believe there are more serious problems here that led to many posters leaving.

Because he openly admits it.

Because he told me/us so. About two years ago he stated here that he had "about eleven" (sic) posters on ignore. The number has undoubtedly risen since then, though there can't be many more than eleven active posters left here by now (thanks not least to him).

Try it yourself, Blue. Seriously. And please report back here with the results.

I believe there are more serious problems here that led to many posters leaving.

god yes. But about those problems too, no honest discussion is possible (much less welcome) here. It's all "on ignore".

Updating the now- fictional Moderator List to reflect reality (or what naive old-fashioned folks call "the truth") would be a welcome and long-overdue move, for starters. That list is seriously misleading, especially to any posters who have joined this board since 2014.

Two years ago eleven could have included all kinds of posters, doesn't sound like that many. But okay, he said so.

Try it yourself, Blue. Seriously. And please report back here with the results.

That's just insane. SLAD gets away with it every day. And like she always says - if you don't like it, post your own wall of content.

It's not insane. SLAD has largely stopped doing it over the last two weeks or so. Also, SLAD is neither disingenuous nor a warmonger, and she does not have (or pretend to have) most of the active posters "on ignore" (which is the thread topic). Finally, SLAD's post-Trumpocalypse meltdown did annoy the hell out of me and many, many others here, but she was not alone in her derangement, it appears to have been temporary, and she appears to be recovering from it now.

Seriously? That's your advice, as Moderator? That's how you want to see General Discussion?

What exactly are you counter suggesting Mac?
He approve every post for length? Content?
To your criteria?

I look at it, you've got three options:

1. Build your own wall
2. Tend to your own garden
3. Complain about other peoples walls and gardens

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

Good time for a change
See, the luck I've had
Can make a good man
Turn bad

So please please please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This time

Haven't had a dream in a long time
See, the life I've had
Can make a good man bad

So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Lord knows, it would be the first time

^^"LOL", or something. It's not just the distinction between General Discussion and the Data Dump that has been wilfully erased; there is now no longer any distinction between GD and The Lounge. In 2017, Anything Goes, anywhere, all the time. It's all just grist to the shitmill, and nothing ever matters. QED.

There has always been a fair bit of substantive content mixed in with the more, shall we say; ideologically tainted content here at RI. The mix is better than at most places anyway. Still, my opinion from the start, is that material of substance can be easily displaced by reams of emotionally triggering rhetoric because substantial material often challenges ones pretenses so that it becomes much easier join the circus than it is to examine ones own part in what is going on.

One thing that could be tried is to allow or encourage re-posting of selected material that deserves more discussion.
Something could be done to balance overposting. Not that I care at this point, except for the anthropological tidbits.

Two examples come to mind with, I think it was Cordelia's post titled The Leftist case for Brexit. Grizzlies thread on Idiot Leftists was good also, even if the title was overdone.

People are so scared of the 'right wing' that they allow a parody proxy element to represent 'the left'.
All these things will continue as long as coercion remains a central element of our mentality.

This here represents a reading comprehension failure on your part. Try again.

Edit: LMFAO, I looked up some SLAD quotes to see if I was describing her stance accurately, and, well...it's usually phrased far less charitably. I guess I can see why you thought those were my words.

I'd like to see a General Discussion that's more interesting. All this politics shit is just Facebook noise. I'd like a more non-linear, less responsive/reactive General Discussion, break the yoke of the media cycle. I'd like to see people contributing their own ideas and writing more often, too. I'd like a lot of things, though.

I'm not voting because I've got two conflicting opinions on the subject. On one hand, I don't have anyone on ignore on RI. At one point when I was pissed at someone, I put them on ignore for a week, but then I removed them from the list because my anger subsided and it just felt pointless. It sure seemed pointless watching it during the whole electoral cycle last year - I had to laugh watching one poster putting another poster on ignore, post repeatedly about doing so, then in the blink of an eye start replying to the poster they put on ignore! What's the fucking point of having an ignore function if you keep using it on people you just can't stop ignoring?!

However, there was another discussion board, I'll call it Demagogic Underlords, where I really wish I had a functional ignore button when I was posting parapolitical material. Because the mods at Demagogic Underlords allowed trolls complete freedom to harass me on every post, I really had to limit my participation in their General Discussion. So I can definitely see the value of the ignore function, I just don't see it's usefulness here - yet.
