It was Project Willow who first acquainted me with Jordan Peterson, with a video in the Gender thread last year, where a gaggle of students were accusing him of "transphobia" for refusing to use "their pronouns". (What's the next demand? Their own adjectives? Their own verbs?) I found his stance, and his patience, impressive, as did Willow.

The answer is that they've had almost ZERO effect, sweet MacC, particularly in comparison to Big Business, Big Oil, Big Tobacco, Big Money, a couple hundred billionaire families and their various think tanks and university endowments, etc, etc, etc, and all the other entrenched elites (the REAL elites, not the university profs struggling to publish or perish, or for the sweet brass ring of tenure and a salary in the high five figures! Oh happy day!).MacCruiskeen » 13 Mar 2018 22:27 wrote:Have postmodernist thinkers had a positive or negative effect on that civilization, in your view?
It strikes me that to even ask such a question displays an almost total ignorance of the subject, due no doubt in large part to the fact that there's been so much reactionary lying about it (and lies are almost always much easier to digest and spread) that there's hardly any room left for truth in most people's heads anymore. And anyway, who has the time? No... for most people, it's quick and easy lies over difficult, occasionally disturbing truths, 9 times out of 10.
But gosh, you sure are defensive of this Peterson fellow's shitty, ignorant take on Postmodernism, despite your claim that you never heard of him before today!

I was addressing Mulligan, not you, as you well know. But you are desperate for my attention. It is pathetic. You are a) foolishly, ridiculously wrong; b) as thick as mince, c) a pathetic attention-seeking bore; and d) a liar.Jerky » Tue Mar 13, 2018 5:45 pm wrote:The answer is that they've had almost ZERO effect, sweet MacC,MacCruiskeen » 13 Mar 2018 22:27 wrote:Have postmodernist thinkers had a positive or negative effect on that civilization, in your view?

Now you've finally got what you wanted, o jerky one. You riled me. Satisfied? Now stop flamebaiting, fuck off and cultivate your profoundly impressive, desperately facetious, self-adoring, graphomaniac, no-readership blog.

Jerky, you brought up the irrelevant "issue" of which posters are "boosting" Peterson, then, even though you're "not a fighter," you bully Rory with foul language. Then later on, you say you agree with or like at least half of what the buffoon Peterson ever said. Let's get it all together please.Jerky » Tue Mar 13, 2018 3:13 pm wrote:Moderators, why is this pot calling the kettle black YET AGAIN? Why do the real bully boys on this board insist on projecting their own behaviors onto the likes of myself, AD, and SLAD? Why, why, WHY?! It's just not FAIR I tells ya.

Btw, I liked the story about the kid on the monkey bars, it was provocative.

Jerky, I'm going to ask you nicely to please remove the phrase "---------" from your reply to Rory. That has no place on RI.

Done. Sorry, Rory. I hope my goofy replacement words are acceptable.
Also, apologies to MacC. When I accused him of "pretending not to know of Jordan Peterson until today" I had him confused with Rory.
Turns out MacC is, in fact, a hard-core, True Believing, Jordan Peterson Fanboy Booster Squad Commando in Good Standing! In fact, if the Peterson contagion manages to spread through this board much more, we can pretty much go ahead and call MacC "Patient Zero".
Appy Polly Lodges for the mix up!

Re: Jordan Peterson with Russell Brand & Ian McGilchrist
Jordan Peterson is an atypical Canadian despite being raised on a little house on the prairie. His formative views came mostly from adolescent library books, like Disney’s fairy tales reinforcing the fifties view of macho-man male dominance and the submissive sex’s subordination. His self-isolation from political correctness separates him from his countrymen, but his home boy banter gradually reveals his education and ideas reflect a lonely view of how being separated from the mainstream is retrogressive.
As he ventured out into the real world of multiculturalism he felt like the misfit he was, and sought understanding from Jung instead of accepting real life lessons. It isn’t hard to see that he still operates like a prairie farmer cultivating a crop of raw oats to seed his fantasies and fixations involving a return to social sexism.
But, like other farmers who have found fame and fortune, he knows how to milk an audience. His rustling and round-up rodeo really captures wannabe stallion studs at premium prices.

Hey Jerky, you're making things hard on us new mods. Don't do that. I can't believe I have to actually do this, but consider this a warning. After that it's some time off. So don't do it. Thanks man.

Re: Jordan Peterson with Russell Brand & Ian McGilchrist
Unusual character. Was completely unfamiliar with him. Have watched all the interviews and read the articles posted in this thread and that is the sum total of my knowledge of Peterson. I'm reluctant to take the shortcut and dismiss him out of hand, but WTF? :
Speaking of Trump: "If he wasn't smart he couldn't have done those things." - Jordan Peterson
Really? You can't think of any other way Trump could have attained the material success that he has?
I completely agree however that it is a mistake to believe your enemies are stupid simply because they are wrong. Such a caution is better directed toward Peterson than Trump I should think.
Nonetheless, Peterson seems like a complicated figure that is not so easily dismissed. I find myself somewhat torn and confused. And that is interesting to me.

Re: Jordan Peterson with Russell Brand & Ian McGilchrist
Au contraire, and showing the usefulness of social science, I submit Trump has been able to do "those things," especially his political rise, thanks to being stupid and proclaiming it consistently and proudly. With the perfect comment "I could shoot a guy on Fifth Avenue," he both said he was stupid and called his followers morons. It worked. Explaining that is a problem for sociologists, not philosophers. As for his prior success, it helps to inherit, to be initiated into the NY-NJ mob, to have impunity by reason of wealth and the right friends, to coincidentally enter business with perfect historic timing (at the all-time bottom of the NY real estate market), to be ruthless and shameless about bilking customers, lenders and workers, and to spend decades providing everything the media wants in a shiny "celebrity" object willingly and assiduously. Understanding this from the opposition side is not to be dismissive of its power. It shows just how hard it is to beat. Remember that Einstein quote about the two limitless things in the universe?
