Now, with respect to your other comments/sentiment: it's not for you or I to judge/critique the reasons a segment of the population enjoy or choose to purchase guns. I'm no arbiter of what another human should identify as their hobby (so long as it falls within the confines of legality) -- none of us are.

As to the former, no -- that's not what I took from 82_28's comment. He's referring to gun ownership -- polishing guns, staring at them, etc.: there's NOTHING illegal about that, nor should there be.
Let them polish and/or fetishize over their guns to their heart's content. It's not the reason we have a gun violence problem in the States.

My point, with both replies to you in this context, is that laws change. Circumstances change, and laws - human things, made and enforced by humans - change to fit the circumstances. I personally am not against private ownership of firearms, but there need to be some common sense limits on who can have them, and what they can have.

Indeed - circumstances do change. The factors, specific to guns/gun ownership in America, that are the drivers to these (relatively recent) changes is what interests me.

Common sense is a sound approach -- a growing challenge in an era lacking in it.
(And of course, "common sense" may be applied differently per person, or perhaps, per demographic)
