Which Ukraine thread? Can you post the link please?

Or wait, is it the content that is somehow blocked? An "illegal link" perhaps?

I don't know but what is the text or image that's being blocked? Can you describe it? Does it have code in it? Perhaps it's a link that you can show us in the format site-name DOT org?

Sure, that's the answer. I'm just curious what it is.

Re: Rhetoric and the art of Collaborative Discussion

Postby brekin » Mon Dec 31, 2018 11:40 pm

Greetings. Long time no post. Just stopped by to drop off a holiday card of sorts and some annoying year end unsolicited advice treats.
Hope all is well with all and thought the year end chirpings of a previously frequent poster who is now gone silent and so is mostly agenda/rancor/faction free in regards to the current (albeit eternal return) r.i. sturm und drang might be timely.

Ultimately, and not surprisingly perhaps to most, but bears repeating: none of this matters but how you treat each other. Being able look at all of this with new eyes has helped me realize that the zealous quest for truth leaves too many casualties and since I imagine the great majority of you are doing this on your free time- you might want to consider why you are spending so much time, voluntarily role playing the roles of grand inquisitor, martyr, advocate for the defense, political prisoner, secret police, rabble rouser, etc. while engaging with such depressingly dark subject matter.

Personally, I found I was because I needed to create (recreate) an arena that provided the fear, stress, intrigue, paranoia, uncertainty, drama and mystery that I was already familiar with and assumed would at some point even more so be. Granted all boards suffer from communication issues but usually the topic matter is benign enough to off set that. Here, I found the zealously raving, railing, politicking, "debating" and analyzing about the daily dispatch of crypto-apocalyptic doom and gloom was (surprise!) not healthy for me.. So, just something to consider from a rigint ghost of xmas past about how you are spending your (and others) time here and the possible effects after.

Ok, time to go, the orderly is letting me know it's snack time (jello with whip!) and then monopoly in the game room after. I hope I get to be the top hat this time. And you get to be what you want this time.

^^^ You've really been missed Brekin, witty as usual; it's good to hear from you, even if it's a brief advisory capacity.

It's human nature of course to connect in whatever form connecting takes and some are more conflict oriented than others, I guess. Nothing new here and everybody probably already knows, but I found snip from below a useful reminder (generally speaking; not related to 'dating', whatever that is)...

The Role of Perception in Online Relationships

What's Missing Online? Sensory Information and Body Language

So clearly most of our perceptual equipment cannot be utilized in our online relationships. Consequently, we miss out on huge chunks of information about other people that we would normally have. Various studies have been carried out to explore how much of our communication is verbal as opposed to non verbal. The percentage splits have been different, but what is not disputed is that non verbal communication is a very important aspect of communication and the development of human relationships.

The major disadvantage of online relationships and communication is that there is no body language to read. One study shows that 93% of communication is through non verbal means (including body language) and only 7% down to verbal communication. So online, we're stuck with having to try to do all of our communicating (both listening and speaking) with 7% of the tools we would normally use. This is a bit like trying to fix a car with only a hammer and one socket wrench! How effective can our online relationships really be with such a limited amount of tools at our disposal?

First: great to hear you're back on that captain's chair, Elvis.

A reprieve for the 'condemned man', then. It is a new year, after all. Perhaps it may lead to a measure of self-reflection and/or re-calibration, not only for AD: a few of us can benefit from a 'reset' of sorts. Let's aim to focus discussion on the issues out there (rather than whatever squabbles we may conjure up in here), and encourage, rather than dissuade, open and critical discourse among/between members.

Welcome back Elvis, this is fantastic news.
Maybe there’s hope after all for what I believe is a unique and valuable site.
