Nah, the chronology makes that impossible. Plus he was never a US citizen.

Some informed speculations from Team Larouche:

Even though the Mega hunt was formally called off, still in some U.S. intelligence quarters, the effort to unearth the suspected Israeli spy cell apparently continued. In September 2000, a CIA team of counterintelligence specialists arrived in Israel, after U.S. Ambassador Martin Indyk had his security clearances temporarily lifted. Ostensibly, Indyk had breached security guidelines by bringing classified U.S. government documents to his residence in Tel Aviv. But it later was revealed that the CIA probe was triggered by an August 2000 unauthorized meeting between Indyk and the former head of the Mossad, Ephraim Halevy, which the ambassador had never reported back to Washington.

If there were anyone in the Clinton Administration’s political hierarchy who was a prime candidate to be the Israeli spy Mega, it was Indyk. A British-born Australian citizen, Indyk had been Australia’s top Mideast security official in the late 1970s, as deputy director of current Mideast intelligence at the Australian Office of National Assessments, the equivalent of the U.S. National Security Council. But, Indyk abruptly quit the post after just ten months, prompting speculation that he had come under suspicion of spying for Israel (he had lived in Israel while completing his dissertation on “The Power of the Weak: The Ability of Israel and Egypt to Resist the Policies of their Super-Power Patrons”). According to British journalist Kevin Dowling, Indyk next surfaced in Israel, as a “media consultant” to Israel’s Likud Prime Ministers, Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir.

In 1982, Indyk came to America, ostensibly on a six-month sabbatical from his duties with the Office of the Israeli Prime Minister. Based out of Cornell University, Indyk formed a research department for the America-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the “official” Israeli lobby in the United States. Within a year, AIPAC had ponied up $100,000 to Indyk to hive off the research unit as the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP). Pro-Israel luminaries in Washington, including former Vice President Walter Mondale, former Secretaries of State George Shultz and Alexander Haig, and former United Nations Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, were among the initiating members of WINEP’s advisory board, according to Dowling’s Sept. 27, 2000 account of the Indyk counterintelligence probe.

Indyk’s “six-month sabbatical” never ended, but it was not until 1987 that the Australian got his first green card, permitting him to work in the United States. Indyk was made a U.S. citizen on Jan. 12, 1993—just eight days before he was appointed to the incoming Clinton Administration’s National Security Council (NSC) staff as Senior Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs. Indyk had already been an informal Mideast policy adviser to President George H.W. Bush, at the initiative of Dennis Ross, Bush’s Assistant Secretary of State, previously a deputy to Indyk at WINEP. At the time of the Mega hunt, Indyk had Ross’ old job as Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East.

Another prime suspect in the Mega mole hunt was Leon Fuerth, Vice President Albert Gore’s national security adviser, and another well-known pro-Likud fanatic. The Washington Post, in a 1998 profile of Fuerth, reported that he was suspected by U.S. intelligence officials of passing sensitive U.S. policy information to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud), a passionate, personal enemy of President Clinton, who was suspected of activating the Mega spy operation.

Also on the Mega list of suspects inside the Clinton national security apparatus was Richard Clarke, the National Security Council “counterterrorism czar,” who was fired from the State Department and brought onto the Bush Administration NSC in 1992, after he was accused by the State Department’s Inspector General of concealing illegal Israeli arms sales to China.

Or, you know, it's all of them and more.

Israeli Espionage Against the US
[This survey of Israeli spying on the US was compiled in 1997.]

The Washington Post reported in a front-page story on May 7th, 1997 that US intelligence had intercepted a conversation in which two Israeli officials had discussed the possibility of getting a confidential letter that then-Secretary of State Warren Christopher had written to Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat. One of the Israelis had commented that they may get the letter from “Mega”– apparently a codename for an Israeli agent within the US government.

This revelation has been treated by much of the press as something of an aberration, as Israeli officials have claimed that they do not spy on the US. Israel Foreign Minister David Levy told the Washington Post (5/8/97) that “Our diplomats all over the world, and of course specifically in the US, don’t deal with such a thing.” Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office declared: “Israel does not use intelligence agents in the United States. Period.”

Here is a sampling of the public record of Israeli espionage and covert actions against the US:

According to Time magazine (5/19/97), the US ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, last year “complained privately to the Israeli government about heavy-handed surveillance by Israeli intelligence agents, who had been following American-embassy employees in Tel Aviv and searching the hotel rooms of visiting US officials.”

***

Three relevant documents were made public in early 1996:

1) A General Accounting Office report “Defense Industrial Security: Weaknesses in US Security Arrangements With Foreign-Owned Defense Contractors” found that according to intelligence sources “Country A” (identified by intelligence sources as Israel, Washington Times, 2/22/96) “conducts the most aggressive espionage operation against the United States of any US ally.” The Jerusalem Post (8/30/96) quoted the report, “Classified military information and sensitive military technologies are high-priority targets for the intelligence agencies of this country.”

The report described “An espionage operation run by the intelligence organization responsible for collecting scientific and technologic information for [Israel] paid a US government employee to obtain US classified military intelligence documents.” The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs (Shawn L. Twing, April 1996) noted that this was “a reference to the 1985 arrest of Jonathan Pollard, a civilian US naval intelligence analyst who provided Israel’s LAKAM [Office of Special Tasks] espionage agency an estimated 800,000 pages of classified US intelligence information.”

The GAO report also noted that “Several citizens of [Israel] were caught in the United States stealing sensitive technology used in manufacturing artillery gun tubes.”

2) An Office of Naval Intelligence document, “Worldwide Challenges to Naval Strike Warfare” reported that “US technology has been acquired [by China] through Israel in the form of the Lavi fighter and possibly SAM [surface-to-air] missile technology.” Jane’s Defense Weekly (2/28/96) noted that “until now, the intelligence community has not openly confirmed the transfer of US technology [via Israel] to China.” The report noted that this “represents a dramatic step forward for Chinese military aviation.” (Flight International, 3/13/96)

3) The Defense Investigative Service circulated a memo in late 1995 warning US military contractors that “Israel aggressively collects [US] military and industrial technology.” The report stated that Israel obtains information using “ethnic targeting, financial aggrandizement, and identification and exploitation of individual frailties” of US citizens. (Washington Post, 1/30/96) (This report was criticized by several groups for allegedly implying that Americans Jews were particularly suspect.)

***

From New York Times December 22, 1985, by David K. Shipler:

Many American officials are convinced of Israel’s ability, on a routine basis, to obtain sensitive information about this county’s secret weapons, advanced technology and internal policy deliberations in Washington…

The F.B.I. knew of at least a dozen incidents in which American officials transferred classified information to the Israelis, [former Assistant Director of the F.B.I.] Mr. [Raymond] Wannal said. The Justice Department did not prosecute.

“When the Pollard case broke, the general media and public perception was that this was the first time this had ever happen,” said John Davitt, former chief of the Justice Department’s internal security section. “No, that’s not true at all. The Israeli intelligence service, when I was in the Justice Department, [1950-1980] was the second most active in the United States, to the Soviets.”

***

From “The Samson Option,” by Seymour M. Hersh
[Page numbers are from the Vintage paperback edition, 1992.]

The name “Mega” in the recent Washington Post story may be noteworthy:

[I]llicitly obtained intelligence was flying so voluminously from LAKAM into Israeli intelligence that a special code name, JUMBO, was added to the security markings already on the documents. There were strict orders, [Ari] Ben-Menashe recalled: “Anything marked JUMBO was not supposed to be discussed with your American counterparts.” (“The Samson Option,” pg 295)

After Jonathan Pollard was arrested for selling secrets to Israel, the Israeli leadership denied all knowledge. Hersh provides several sources indicating that they did know. Here’s one:

The top leadership, of course, knew what was going on. One former Israeli intelligence official recalled that Peres and Rabin, both very sophisticated in the handling of intelligence, were quick to ask, as the official put it, “Where are we getting this stuff?” They were told, the Israeli added, that Israeli intelligence ‘has a penetration into the U.S. intelligence community.’ Both men let it go. No one said: ‘Stop it here and now.'” (“The Samson Option,” pg 296)

One of the little-known aspects of the Pollard case is that information was passed along by the Israelis to the Soviets:

For Shamir, the Israeli added, the relaying of the Pollard information to the Soviets was his way of demonstrating that Israel could be a much more dependable and important collaborator in the Middle East than the “fickle” Arabs: “What Arab could give you this?” (“The Samson Option,” pg 299)

The Pollard information helped in Israel’s ability to exercise “The Samson Option” — to threaten the Soviet Union, and therefore the US, with nuclear war if they didn’t get their way in developments in the Mideast. Disclosure of information to the Soviets also apparently led the Soviets to track down US agents:

One senior American intelligence official confirmed that there have been distinct losses of human and technical intelligence collection ability inside the Soviet Union that have been attributed, after extensive analysis, to Pollard. “The Israeli objective [in the handling of Pollard] was to gather what they could and let the Soviets know that they have a strategic capability–for their survival [the threat of a nuclear strike against the Soviets] and to get their people out [of the Soviet Union],” one former CIA official said. “Where it hurts us is our agents being rolled up and our ability to collect technical intelligence being shut down. When the Soviets found out what’s being passed”–in the documents supplied by Pollard to the Israelis–“they shut down the source.” (“The Samson Option,” pg 300)

***

A portion of a 1979 CIA internal report, “Israel: Foreign Intelligence and Security Services” (from The Nation, “I Spy, You Spy, We All Spy,” December 14, 1985, by Alexander Cockburn) included the following:

In one instance Shin Beth [the Israeli internal security agency] tried to penetrate the US Consulate General in Jerusalem through a clerical employee who was having an affair with a Jerusalem girl. They rigged a fake abortion case against the employee in an unsuccessful effort to recruit him. Before this attempt at blackmail, they had tried to get the Israeli girl to elicit information from her boyfriend.

Two other important targets in Israel are the US Embassy in Tel Aviv and United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) with headquarters in Jerusalem. There have been two or three crude efforts to recruit Marine guards for monetary reward. In the cases involving UNTSO personnel, the operations involved intimidation and blackmail.

In 1954, a hidden microphone planted by the Israelis was discovered in the Office of the US Ambassador in Tel Aviv. In 1956, telephone taps were found connected to two telephones in the residence of the US military attache.

***

In March 1978, Stephen Bryen, then a Senate Foreign Relations Committee staffer, was overheard in a DC hotel offering confidential documents to top Israeli military officials. The F.B.I. found Bryen’s fingerprints on the documents in question, and he admitted to having obtained them the night before the meeting with the Israelis. Bryen was forced to quit his job, but was never indicted. He was later brought on to the Defense Department as a deputy to Reagan Administration Assistant Secretary Richard Pearle. There Bryen was in charge of such matters as overseeing technology transfers in the Mideast. (See “The Armageddon Network” (Amana Books) by Michael Saba, an officer of the National Association of Arab Americans when he overheard Bryen offer the documents to the Israelis.)

As late as 1992, Stephen Bryen was serving on board of the pro-Israeli Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs while continuing as a paid consultant — with security clearance — on exports of sensitive US technology. (Wall Street Journal, 1/22/92, Edward T. Pound and David Rogers)

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Excellent roundup, thank you very much, SLAD.

That Intelligencer interview with Epstein's bodyguard / MMA trainer was wild, too, a vivid reminder that we already have a One World Government, and it's organized crime.

Story Transcript

MARC STEINER: Welcome to The Real News Network. I’m Marc Steiner. Great to have you all with us.

Jeffrey Epstein is at the top of every news cycle, and dominates our digital social media world. His trafficking of young girls, children to satisfy his and the sexual preferences of so many of the rich and powerful, are at the center of all this, as are his connections to that dark world of the unseemly side of the interaction between government, business, and the intelligence world allegedly.

Using sex as blackmail is nothing new. It goes back to the early mob, the CIA, and seems to connect the dots to Epstein. That was the story we’re going tell today written by our guest, who wrote this for Mint Press in the three-part series called “The Jeffrey Epstein Scandal: Too Big to Fail.” The three parts were “Hidden in Plain Sight;” “Government by Blackmail: Jeffrey Epstein, Trump’s Mentor and the Dark Secrets of the Reagan Era;” and “Mega Group, Maxwells and Mossad: The Spy Story at the Heart of the Jeffrey Epstein Scandal.” Whitney Webb is a Mint Press News journalist based in Chile who has written and contributed to many, many outlets and joins us now from her home there. Welcome. Good to have you with us, Whitney.

WHITNEY WEBB: Hi. Thanks so much for the opportunity.

MARC STEINER: So let’s begin with how this sojourn began for you because it seems that the heart of what you’re doing here is saying what Epstein was accused of doing, what he did is nothing new in our annuls with this history. That this using sexual blackmail, it goes way back to the mob, to Meyer Lansky, to the founding of the CIA. So talk a little about that, the genesis of this.

WHITNEY WEBB: Okay. So what I hope to show in my reporting is that this is not a type of operation or a scandal really that began or ends with Jeffrey Epstein now that he has died. As you mentioned, my report tries to go as far back as possible to really see where these sexual blackmail operations began in the context of this network to which Jeffrey Epstein was later connected. And from my research, it was first pioneered by Meyer Lansky and the national crime syndicate in the late thirties. He was sending Virginia Hill, who’s often been called the mistress of the mob, he was sending her to Mexico to try and lure foreign diplomats and to bug departments and use that for blackmail purposes. Not long after that, Lansky became an associate. Well, he was a covert associate at the time with the OSS, the Office of Strategic Services.

During World War II when they formed – the OSS formed this alliance, which they said was out of wartime necessity, right, with figures in the criminal underworld, including Lansky and some others, in what was known as Operation Underworld, which was a government operation during the war that was denied for, I think, 40 years. Afterwards, that alliance, even though it was supposed to be just for the war, it continued on. It continued to grow and really proliferated, especially after the 1960s when the CIA hired several Lansky associates for assassination teams, especially in relation to their efforts to assassinate Fidel Castro in Cuba and some other activities.

And during the same time, we also see sexual blackmail operations with a lot of associates of Lansky and powerful people in government take office, and that really began during the anti-communist crusade of the 1950s and the McCarthy era and involved a prominent businessman who was the owner of Schenley Liquors, Lewis Rosenstiel, who was a long-time associate of Meyer Lansky. It involved Roy Cohn, who was General Counsel to McCarthy during this time and also J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI at the time and very famous for his interest in acquiring large amounts of blackmail, was also involved in this ring that involved children, specifically boys, and it continued for decades and eventually Roy Cohn took it over from Lewis Rosenstiel.

The relationship between Rosenstiel and Cohn was often described as father and son or that Rosenstiel was his mentor. Cohn eventually took this over what had originally been run out of Lewis Rosenstiel’s personal home and began to run it out of what became a rather infamous suite in the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, Suite 233, that was sometimes called the Blue Suite. And he would host these sorts of events there with recording equipment and all of that, that were used to blackmail powerful people, first in the McCarthy era, and later on.

And as I show in part two of my report, these sorts of networks, they—Roy Cohn was not the only one. There were some other ones that the CIA was running in the late ’70s that were connected to disgraced CIA agent Edwin Wilson. And then after that, in the 1980s with Iran-Contra and Bill Casey and all of that, there were several other sexual blackmail operations or child trafficking rings that were connected to prominent players in the Iran-Contra scandal.

MARC STEINER: So some of what you’re talking about here, I think, let me just be clear about a couple of things before I ask this next question. What you’ve just described, especially about the blue room and what went on in those places, this is not alleged. There’s these facts. These are things that are corroborated, correct?

WHITNEY WEBB: Right. With the Plaza Hotel, this was actually admitted. Roy Cohn actually admitted this to the face of an NYPD detective that was in charge of the human trafficking division at the time because Roy Cohn knew he was untouchable because of his extreme connections to the politically powerful, the media and also the criminal underworld. He basically felt like he was immune enough to be able to say that point so blankly to this person’s face. It was also private investigators in New York that looked into Roy Cohn for various reasons, also confirm the existence of this blue suite as it was called. And it was also referenced by Louis Rosenstiel’s ex-wife in divorce filings. And it also came to light during the early 1970s, a committee on crime in New York.

MARC STEINER: So let me, I want you in a broad sense—We don’t have like an hour here to do this, but I wish we did because there’s three parts. This is huge. There’s so much to pull out of there, but make for us this moment— before I have other questions— connecting the dots. You talk about Meyer Lansky and Rosenstiel, who owns Schenley Liquors and the connections to Roy Cohn and Maxwell, the man who owned Fox News and more, and his daughter.

WHITNEY WEBB: Oh, Rupert Murdoch?

MARC STEINER: I meant Maxwell, actually, not Murdoch. I meant Maxwell.

WHITNEY WEBB: Oh, I’m sorry.

MARC STEINER: It was my fault. I misspoke. And then, and so you make these connections between these people that lead you in some senses to Epstein. So what is that arc? Can you paint that arc briefly for us?

WHITNEY WEBB: Okay. Well there’s actually a whole bunch of different connections to Jeffrey Epstein here. So basically, I talked about the OSS. It’s believed that Donald Barr originally hired Jeffrey Epstein to work in the Dalton School and Donald Barr had previously worked at the OSS. After that, he was hired to work at Bear Stearns. Alan Greenberg was a close friend of Roy Cohn and actually was the honorary chairman of a dinner for him that was honoring Roy Cohn I believe in 1983. And the other honorary chairmen were other close friends of Roy Cohn, including Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump.

After he left Bear Stearns in 1981, he— according to journalist, Vicky Ward— was a financial bounty hunter of sorts, looking to chase down money for governments and powerful people. The Evening Standard of England later reported that during that time Epstein claimed that he was working for the CIA, Vicky Ward later said that one of his clients during that time was a man, Khashoggi. He was known to be working for the Mossad. He was also working for the CIA and he was a major player in this Iran-Contra scandal. Then in 1987, he meets up with Leslie Wexner who has connections to this Meyer Lansky crime syndicate, as I point out in part three. He also meets up with Steve Hoffenberg who he allegedly met through John Mitchell, who was the former Attorney General to Richard Nixon, and Mitchell was actually cited as a friend by Craig Spence, a disgraced Washington lobbyist who was also running a sexual blackmail operation with children. That was discovered in the late 80s and Craig Spence, in some similarity to Jeffrey Epstein, was found dead under somewhat mysterious circumstances and his death was ruled a suicide.

MARC STEINER: So far as we know.

WHITNEY WEBB: Right. And that takes us up to 1991, which right after that, that’s the same year that Robert Maxwell died, as well as several other people that were connected to the Promis software scandal, not just Maxwell. That includes Senator Towers also died that year, as did journalist Danny Casolaro, who was investigating that scandal. And soon after Robert Maxwell died, his daughter Ghislaine Maxwell, moved to New York and began her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. And as I point out in part three of my series, Robert Maxwell was known to be an operative for the Mossad and did several favors for Israel over the course of his career and was also using the Daily Mirror Group, some of the funding for that to fund Mossad operations in Europe. So the intelligence links, I think, are very clear and that’s just the early history. We’re not even getting into the 90s yet. I’m going to be delving more into those connections in part four of my series, which I hope to be out in a few days.

MARC STEINER: I’m looking forward to reading that, but let me just talk about how this all fits together and what it really means, so these last two pieces. I mean, so when you write in the piece, you say Epstein appears to have had ties to Israeli intelligence and has well-documented ties to an influential Israeli politicians and the Mega Group. We’ll talk about that. And it was revealed that Epstein had evaded stricter sentencing in 2008 due to his links to “intelligence.” It was the Mossad ties to Maxwell’s daughter that led many to speculate that Epstein’s sexual blackmail operation was sharing incriminating information with Mossad. But one of the things in the pieces that you write, you use words like appear instead of we know, so what do we know? Talk about how you make these connections and what we really know and what we really don’t know. You know, what’s alleged and what’s real.

WHITNEY WEBB: Okay. Well, I mean there’s a lot of claims I make in the story. So to go over all of them and say, you know, what appears to be and definitely what is—What we do know, right, is that – are claims that Epstein made in the past, for example, that he worked for the CIA, we know from journalists that are considered reputable sources when covering Epstein, like Vicky Ward for example, that he had been working for people like Adnan Khashoggi who are now known to have been linked to the Mossad. We know that his biggest patron, financial patron, was Leslie Wexner who has been tied to organized crime syndicates according to a 1985 Columbus, Ohio murder investigation.

We know that he was recording sexual black– that Jeffrey Epstein was recording sexual blackmail. We know that Alex Acosta claimed the reason he approved that sweetheart deal was because he had been told that Epstein was linked to intelligence, though he did not specify which intelligence agency. And given the network and the associations that I’ve already laid out, which are documented, right, it certainly is an overwhelming amount of evidence, of circumstantial evidence nonetheless, or circumstantial evidence I guess you could say. But the amount of it really makes a convincing case that this is a much larger network that has documented ties to operations involving sexual blackmail that preceded Epstein and that Epstein is more—Because of what we know he was doing and we know he had ties to a lot of the people that had been tied to those previous sexual blackmail operations, to me, it really shows that Epstein was carrying on an operation that he did not invent, right?

This is something that did not begin and did not end with him, and he was just perpetuating this. I think that’s why it’s really important to challenge some of the narratives that have come out around this case that Epstein was solely responsible for all of this activity and that he had deceived the billionaires who funded him and that this is all to be blamed on a single man. I think if we do that, we’re really doing his victims an injustice because this is something much larger than Epstein. If the other people and other parties responsible or not pursued or held to account, this is likely to continue well into the future. And because of the, what I would say the disgusting nature of Epstein’s activities, I think most Americans have a vested interest in preventing these type of operations from continuing and especially if intelligence agencies are involved, that suggests that American taxpayer money is being used in some capacity to fund these operations.

MARC STEINER: So, and finally here, I mean there’s two things. There’s so much we could talk about here, but these two things—The conversation I had yesterday is that – was around conspiracy theories are great, but what we need is real reporting and intelligence work, police work and congressional investigations to see where’s the there there? And how do you put these dots together so they become fact and not possibilities? And so, I think that’s the important piece here. I think you made a strong point when you said you can’t just blame this all on one man, Epstein. There are too many other connections out there.

So where do you take this then? For you, what does this say in the final analysis about what might be going on here? And I know that this is in some ways conjecture and speculation because even though you find these connections, that sometimes there’s nothing really to tie them together in terms of fact yet. So where do you take this?

WHITNEY WEBB: Well, I think there definitely needs to be an independent investigation. I think a lot of the people that are involved in the current investigation, including Bill Barr, I don’t think many Americans should be confident in what he will turn up.

MARC STEINER: Yeah. You make the Barr-Epstein connection in your last – in the third part of your series.

WHITNEY WEBB: Right, yeah. But beyond that, Bill Barr also was known for stonewalling the Church Committee in the late 70s, and he was particularly trying to prevent the CIA’s use of sexual blackmail operations from coming to light to the Church Committee. I think that is at least like significant, as is the fact that he justified the legal pardons of numerous Iran-Contra figures and including—And given the role of many Iran-Contra figures in this network that I describe in my reporting, I don’t really see him as being an impartial investigator here. And also, the fact that he worked for the law firm that defended Epstein later on in the 2000s, I think is just—

MARC STEINER: And his father hired Epstein.

WHITNEY WEBB: Right, exactly. And that he’s going to get to the – that Bill Barr will get to the bottom of this. I don’t. I don’t really buy that, so I think there needs to be a more independent investigation. Concerns have also been raised about the fact that Epstein was trying to blackmail people. Now that blackmail has fallen, whoever raided Epstein’s properties, depending on who’s using that, it could even be Bill Barr that now has control over this blackmail material. It’s hard to know if he will be using it, if that will just go away or Bill Barr will use it for his own political agendas now given his history. So I think that’s something to be concerned about. And also, the fact that there may be several members of Congress, if there’s a congressional investigation that may have been tied up in this, we don’t know all the names.

A lot of the documents haven’t come out. Now that Epstein is dead, that criminal case will go away. And so a lot of the evidence uncovered during discovery will not be made public. So I think it is necessary for the public to pressure for transparent campaigns and for other conspirators in this, or co-conspirators in what Epstein was doing, especially Ghislaine Maxwell and Leslie Wexner, that they’d be pursued and questioned by law enforcement.

MARC STEINER: Well, I look forward to talking a great deal more with you. You’ve taken on a lot of very powerful names and people in your piece. I hope you feel safe in what you’re doing.

WHITNEY WEBB: Yeah, I’m not worried.

MARC STEINER: Yeah, but I do. I look forward to this fourth piece. Then maybe when we get the fourth piece, we can have a more lengthy conversation and kind of try to tie these pieces together. I want to thank you for joining us today and good luck.

WHITNEY WEBB: Absolutely. Thanks again.

MARC STEINER: And I’m Marc Steiner here for The Real News Network. Please let us know what you think. Take care.

Kevin Maxwell Faces Financial Waterloo As Deadlines Loom
Independent on Sunday, The 08/01/2004
Kevin Maxwell, the son of the disgraced newspaper tycoon, Robert, faces a financial meltdown this week. The High Court will hear an application on Wednesday to wind up Meynard Freres, the finance operation run by Mr Maxwell (pictured right), Malcolm Grumbridge, a long-time associate of the Maxwell family, and Larry Trachtenberg, an American-born financier who ran businesses for Robert Maxwell before his death in 1991. Both Mr Trachtenberg and Mr Maxwell were acquitted of fraud and theft offences relating to the disappearance of more than pounds 400m from the pension funds of companies in the Maxwell empire, which collapsed in late 1991.

Both Mr Trachtenberg and Mr Maxwell were acquitted of fraud and theft offences relating to the disappearance of more than pounds 400m from the pension funds of companies in the Maxwell empire, which collapsed in late 1991. Mr Maxwell was declared bankrupt when he was deemed responsible for the losses, but discharged his bankruptcy three years later. Mr Maxwell then set up a telecoms company, Telemonde, which was listed on the Nasdaq market in the US. However, this company, where Mr Trachtenberg was also a director, collapsed two years ago.
Since then, Mr Maxwell has been operating via Meynard Freres, a business he set up in the mid-1990s. It has been active doing financial and property deals. It was involved a few months ago in the purchase of the business and assets of Astec Engineering Services, a Midlands business that had run into difficulty and was restructuring under a company voluntary arrangement (CVA). The CVA was supervised by a north London insolvency practitioner, David Rubin. Mr Rubin presented a winding-up petition against Meynard Freres at the High Court on 24 June because of moneys still owning under the Astec deal. A hearing is due on Wednesday and if Meynard does not pay up it is likely to be closed down. No one at Meynard returned calls when contacted about the potential winding- up. Mr Maxwell faces being declared bankrupt before this happens. Judge Michael Payne at Oxford Crown Court gave him 45 days in the middle of June to pay a debt of pounds 1bn owing to a company called Global Investment. The grace was given to Mr Maxwell to allow him to sell assets to pay the money

Jeffrey Epstein ‘Friend’ Ghislaine Maxwell Has More Skeletons in Her Family Closet Than a House of Horrors
The late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime companion and alleged procurer comes from a clan with a penchant for sex, intrigue, science, and illusions.

Published 08.18.19 4:59AM ET
MEYREUIL, France—Ghislaine Maxwell, 57, comes from a family by turns brilliant and accomplished, deceptive and doomed. Her backstory is full of sex and science, money and magical illusions. And today she is the world’s most wanted woman—at least by the media and Jeffrey Epstein’s victims.

She is the youngest child of the notorious and disgraced British media mogul Robert Maxwell, rumored after his mysterious death in 1991 to have been an Israeli spy. She was the alleged paramour-turned-pimp for Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire pedophile who reportedly committed suicide in his cell on August 10.

But there are no known criminal charges against her, only allegations in a civil suit. Indeed, there is speculation she may be cooperating with federal prosecutors. And while she might have decided to hide out here in Provence at her sister’s house in the shadow of Cézanne’s favorite mountain, she was spotted Thursday in California eating a burger while reading a book about CIA heroes.

Ghislaine Maxwell, in short, is a survivor.

“In moments of greatest adversity, that’s where they’re the coolest; it’s bred into the family,” an executive with one of Robert Maxwell’s media companies said after his drowning upended his media empire and forced his wife and children to clean up the mess. “Maxwell’s whole life was ‘Never panic.’”

As we looked for her in France in recent days, she was, of course, nowhere to be seen. But we did discover enough skeletons in the family closet (including those of her in-laws and their families) to fill a house of horrors.

We searched near her dead mother’s estate east of here—and even at the bottom of a cliff in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a few hours from Meyreuil, where her brother-in-law Al Seckel, giver of TED talks on optical illusions, reportedly fell to his death in 2015 after he was exposed as a swindler in Los Angeles.

We also looked at the family tree of her other brother-in-law, an American astrophysicist whose genius rocket scientist father Frank Malina at the Jet Propulsion Lab in California pioneered what would become NASA before he fled to France with J. Edgar Hoover's G-Men on his heels.

For Ghislaine, presumably, outer space is not an option. But in point of fact, she does know how to operate a lot of exotic machinery. In addition to speaking four languages and holding a degree from Oxford, she’s a trained private helicopter pilot, a submersible pilot and qualified to operate undersea robots. Much was made of the latter qualifications when she was fund-raising for her now defunct TerraMar oceanic environmental project, which shuttered after Epstein’s arrest last month.

Ghislaine, who wanted to be seen as a visionary, liked to hang out with others who cultivate that rep, and was pictured with Elon Musk, whose Space X program is based in Hawthorne, just south of Los Angeles.

Ah, there’s a California connection again.

But France is still where Ghislaine Maxwell’s family history begins. Both she and her mother, the elegant and long-suffering Elisabeth Maxwell, were born here. And while some French officials have called for an investigation into Epstein’s activities in Paris, where he had an opulent apartment, Ghislaine’s French connection goes back decades in the south.

It also grew out of the horrors of Auschwitz, which wiped out Robert Maxwell’s parents and siblings and eventually inspired his French Protestant wife, Elisabeth, to become a renowned Holocaust scholar.

And it includes Ghislaine’s very interesting American in-laws who moved back and forth between Provence, the Dordogne and the United States. Their roots involved the pioneering, often reckless rocket scientists of the 1930s who were called the “Suicide Squad” for their risky work at the Jet Propulsion Lab. Among their circle: L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology fame; the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman; and Briton Aleister Crowley, known for black magic and a sex cult.

Maxwell family observers don’t find it strange that Ghislaine and some of her sisters were drawn to larger-than-life, certifiably strange men.

“They attach themselves to bizarre psychopaths like their father,” says a researcher who delved into the family years ago. “Ghislaine wasn’t the only sister to hook up with a weird guy.”

The daddy issues—and the mysterious death issues—began with Robert Maxwell, born into poverty as Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch in Czechoslovakia in 1923. He wanted a big family to recreate, in a way, the siblings he lost to the Nazis, and he very much wanted riches and fame. He achieved all of it, including a seat in the British Parliament. But two of his children died young and greed overtook his ambition.

When Robert Maxwell mysteriously disappeared from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, and his naked body was retrieved floating in the waters off the Canary Islands in November 1991, he already had been drowning in debt.

His business empire was on the verge of ruin and he’d stolen, Bernie Madoff-style, more than $400 million from his employees’ pension funds to forestall bankruptcy. The Pulitzer-Prize-winning reporter Seymour Hersh had recently accused him of being a longtime Israeli intelligence agent in a book about Israel’s nuclear weapons arsenal, The Samson Option.

The conspiracy theories surrounding Robert Maxwell’s death rivaled those of Epstein’s today, although the official take was that he fell off his boat during an early morning walk around the deck.

Epstein, whose pal, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak often crashed at his $77 million Upper East Side apartment in New York, also has been accused of unsavory connections to Israel.

“What are the driving forces that make people do things?’ Ghislaine’s mother Elisabeth asked about her husband in 1995 during a New York Times interview to promote her unusually candid autobiography, A Mind of My Own. In it she admitted Maxwell was a philanderer and often treated her badly—but she said she loved him.

“I hope one day there will be a balance. That time passes, passions fall and eventually some truths emerge,” she said. “It was really a Greek tragedy that his path should have finished the way it did.”

Two of Maxwell’s sons, Kevin and Ian, were investigated for fraud involving their father’s empire after his death and both were cleared in 1996, although at one point Kevin was banned from running a company in the U.K. for eight years. Both landed back in court in 2015 and 2016 facing bankruptcy issues involving another U.K. financial company to which they owed money.

Maxwell biographer Tom Bower was sympathetic to the Maxwell kids, calling their problems, “the tragic legacy of a crooked father. His children just inherited an awful pack of cards.”

Ian Maxwell, now 63, broke his silence about his father in an interview last year with the Sunday Times of London.

“The embrace was suffocating and so loving and everything came your way,” he said. “But then if you were far away in disgrace or you had blotted your copybook, no matter what you had done you were cast out.”

The Oxford-educated Ghislaine, who used to be referred to reflexively as a “British socialite,” reportedly was her father’s favorite. But two of her sisters, the twins Isabel and Christine, now 69, are the most accomplished of the family. They are internet content pioneers who started Magellan, one of the first search engines, and were featured in Michael Wolff’s book, Burn Rate, about his foray into early startups.

The sisters (Christine was said to be the brains behind the operation) made millions when Magellan was later sold to the Excite search company.

Curiously, Isabel followed in the family tradition of filing for bankruptcy in December 2015 despite having been a multi-millionaire. That move may have been related to the untimely demise at age 56 of her third husband, the infamous con man Al Seckel who, she later found out, was not legally her husband since he was still married to his first wife. In 2015, when he reportedly died, he was potentially on the hook for millions.

Seckel was the subject of an extraordinary 5,000-word investigation earlier that same year by The Tablet’s Mark Oppenheimer that laid bare decades of a convoluted and litigious life as the “world’s greatest collector of optical illusions.”

Seckel, the son of a refugee from the Nazis, moved to L.A. and used his wile and charm to pass himself off as an Ivy League graduate and double doctoral candidate at Caltech.

Soon, Seckel zeroed in on the movers and shakers. “An age before Silicon Valley had captured the geek imagination,” Oppenheimer wrote, “Caltech and the surrounding aerospace industry was the frontier of nerd power and glory.”

Seckel befriended and bewitched the Nobel Prize-winning physicists Richard Feynman and Murray Gell-Mann among other neuroscientists, as well as academics and even magicians like James Randi.

Seckel then used those contacts to sell rare books to prestigious customers who were often hoodwinked out of thousands in bad deals. He moved on to co-opt the burgeoning field of optical illusion, popularizing the art of manipulating images by using research from others in books he wrote.

(His daughter, Elizabeth Seckel, has built on her father’s work in optical illusion by pioneering something called “mirror box therapy.” Seckel brought her method, sponsored by the Clinton Global Initiative, to Haiti after the earthquake in 2012 to help recent amputees with their phantom limb pain.)

In 2010, Seckel hosted a scientific conference on Jeffrey Epstein’s infamous private island with Gell-Mann, Leonard Mlodinow, who was Stephen Hawking’s co-author, and MIT’s Gerald Sussman.

Oppenheimer told The Daily Beast this week that there was “no evidence” that Seckel or any of the scientists at the island party were involved in any sexual activity with young girls.

In 2004 Seckel gave a TED talk that’s been viewed almost 2.5 million times about “perceptual illusions that fool our brains.”

Because of Seckel’s shady past, it was not surprising that vague reports of his death—a perceptual illusion perhaps?—began popping up just weeks after Oppenheimer’s July 2015 story exposed him to hordes of creditors.

A paid obituary was published on Legacy.com, supposedly after appearing in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, but it does not appear on the paper's website. One report has circulated around various Seckel-obsessed corners of the internet that his body was found at the bottom of a cliff near the home in France where he had moved with Isabel.

But The Daily Beast could not locate any officials in the town where Seckel was last known to live who had any report of his death. Oppenheimer and others said they have not yet found proof, either. The Daily Beast was unable to reach Isabel Maxwell or Elizabeth Secker for comment.

Christine Maxwell and her astrophysicist husband Roger Malina have, until recently at least, divided their time between their home here in Meyreuil and Dallas, Texas. Malina teaches at the University of Texas there and Christine is a doctoral candidate in the humanities department, a UT spokeswoman told The Daily Beast. Malina was also a director at an astrophysics center in Marseille until last year.

Roger Malina is the son of Czechoslovak-born Frank Malina, an early Elon Musk type who was part of the ragtag group whose daring rocket experiments in 1930s Pasadena led to the formation of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in L.A., the precursor to NASA.

Frank Malina’s best friend, Jack Parsons, was the most charismatic of the group. He led a double life with non-scientist friends like L. Ron Hubbard and Robert Heinlein, author of Stranger in a Strange Land, Starship Troopers, and other sci-fi classics. Parsons also joined an occult group involving the dark arts and sex fetishes founded by Aleister Crowley, an English occultist and magician. The book and CBS TV series Strange Angel are based on Parsons’ life.

In an odd echo of Jeffrey Epstein’s reported desire to seed the human race with his own DNA, Parsons and Hubbard tried for a time to impregnate women to bring forth Babalon, a goddess described as the “Scarlet Woman” in the Themelic belief system to which Crowley subscribed.

When Parsons died in a mysterious explosion at his home at age 37, he had stopped working for JPL and was for a time a consultant to Israel’s nascent rocket system. Media accounts at the time hinted at “sexual perversion,” “black robes,” “sacred fire” and “intellectual necromancy,” according to Vice—and there were also whispers that he might have been murdered.

Frank Malina, Christine Maxwell Malina’s father-in-law, was more of a straight arrow than Parsons and fared better, at first. But some historians say he was cheated of his rightful place as a true hero of the early space race because of years of harassment by the FBI who labeled him a socialist during the McCarthy years because he had campaigned against racial segregation, and raised money for republicans in the Spanish Civil War. After World War II he fled to Paris, where he became a painter and watched the space program soar from afar.

In a brutal twist, Wernher von Braun, a Nazi rocket scientist who was brought to the U.S. as part of Operation Paperclip, the government program that brought Nazi scientists to build American rockets, became the face of the early space program that some feel Malina deserved to have been.

Roger Malina blogs about his famous father on his website where he wrote last year: “Yes, Elon Musk, they triggered in the USA the work that led to your ‘strange’ vision—and they did it a stone’s throw from where your company SpaceX is currently headquartered. And you are dreaming the same dreams as the ‘suicide squad,’ as they were called, at Caltech in the 1930s.”

Looking back, that does seem a strange sobriquet, and oddly appropriate, if not for the rocket builders of 80 years ago, then for the Maxwells and those who were close

FBI investigators are probing potentially vile crimes at Jeffrey Epstein's remote Zorro Ranch in New Mexico, following his death in federal custody last week.

The seemingly idyllic ranch in the shrub-dotted hills 23 miles south of Santa Fe has gone under the radar following raids on Epstein's private Caribbean island and mansions in Manhattan and Palm Beach, but may have played a key role in the depraved pedophile's crimes.

Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts has said she was taken to the ranch as an underage sex slave, sharing photos of herself on the property taken when she was about 17.

As well, Epstein revealed to scientists and close friends that he 'hoped to seed the human race with his DNA by impregnating women' at the vast New Mexico ranch, according to the New York Times.

On February 22, 1993, Epstein's shell company the Zorro Trust completed a purchase of lands owned by members of the King family, a powerful New Mexico agricultural and political dynasty that included then-Governor Bruce King.

Zorro's deal included rights to the Kings' leases on public lands, a total of 1,159 acres rented for $872.22 a year. The entire ranch, including privately held land, totaled nearly 8,000 acres.

According to county records, Epstein began constructing a stable, detached garages, and homes in 1994, and began building his mansion in 1999. Including porches and patios, the mansion came to 57,420 square feet.

Epstein also inquired about building a private airstrip on the leased public land - but when he was informed state officials would need to inspect the land, he quickly withdrew the permit request and built the airstrip on the privately held portion of the ranch.

The ranch is surrounded on nearly all sides by land owned by the powerful King family, insulating it from prying eyes. Fashion designer Tom Ford, whose name is in Epstein's 'little black book', also maintains a massive 20,000-acre ranch not far to the north.

Soon after Epstein's mansion was complete, nearby residents began to notice 'caravans of glamorous women' arriving when Epstein was in town, Santa Fe photographer Gene Peach told the New Republic.

Peach said that locals always knew when 'the Epstein crowd is at the ranch, because the mansion lights drown out the stars'.

In addition to Virginia Roberts, Epstein accuser Maria Farmer said he and his then-assistant Ghislaine Maxwell abused her underage sister on Zorro Ranch.

'During the summer of 1996, Epstein and Maxwell flew my younger sister to their ranch in New Mexico,' Farmer, now 49, wrote in an affidavit.

'She was only 15 at the time and they directed her take off all of her clothes and get on a massage table. Maxwell and Epstein then touched her inappropriately on the massage table. It was not until later in the summer when I called my sister in Thailand where she was studying that I learned what had happened to her at Epstein's New Mexico ranch.'

'To my knowledge, I was the first person to report Maxwell and Epstein to the FBI. It took a significant amount of bravery because I knew how powerful and influential both were.'

There are a number of reasons Epstein may have selected New Mexico as the location for his ranch.

For one, the state's age of consent is 17, which allowed him to be dropped from New Mexico's sex offender registry after just one month following his 2008 guilty plea to one count of procuring a 17-year-old girl for prostitution.

New Mexico also has a strong scientific community, a legacy of the Manhattan Project, which Epstein reportedly insinuated himself into in pursuit of his bizarre goals.

Those goals included plans to have his head and penis cryogenically frozen upon his death, according to the Times.

Epstein donated more than a quarter of a million dollars into the Santa Fe Institute, a think tank for theoretical researchers, and befriended co-founder and quark-theory pioneer Murray Gell-Mann.

Gell-Mann in 2011 told Vanity Fair that “there are always pretty ladies around” when he dined at Zorro Ranch.

The scientific genius died in late May at the age of 89. The Santa Fe Institute has said that Epstein exaggerated his involvement with the think-tank, and was merely an occasional donor.

Authorities in New Mexico are now cooperating with the federal probe into Epstein's potential co-conspirators.

State Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard last month delivered lease documents to state prosecutors who have interviewed possible victims of Epstein who visited his ranch south of Santa Fe.

Now the state attorney general's office has said it is delivering up any evidence to the Southern District of New York, which is continuing the investigation into possible co-conspirators following Epstein's death at age 66.

Zorro Trust remains the legal owner of the New Mexico property. Epstein stated in a court document filed just weeks before his death that his estate was worth approximately $550 million.

The estate will likely pass to Epstein's younger brother Marc, the only surviving member of his immediate family.

Epstein's executor and heirs will undoubtedly face a wave of lawsuits from women who claim they were assaulted and in some cases raped by Epstein for years when they were underage.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN'S UNDOING: A TIMELINE OF THE MILLIONAIRE PEDOPHILE'S DOWNFALL

1999 - Virginia Roberts Giuffre is allegedly recruited by Ghislaine Maxwell to became Epstein's 'sex slave,' at 17. She also claimed that he forced her to have sex with his friend Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth.

2002 - Trump tells New York Magazine that his friend Epstein 'likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.'

2005 - A 14-year-old girl tells police that Epstein molested her at his Palm Beach mansion.

May 2006 - Epstein and two of his associates are charged with multiple counts of unlawful sex acts with a minor. State attorney of the time Barry Krischer, referred the case to a grand jury who heard from just two of the 12 girls law enforcement had gathered as potential witnesses. They returned just one single count of soliciting prostitution.

July 2006 - The case is referred to the FBI by the Florida Palm Beach police who were unhappy with how the case was handled.

2007 - Epstein's lawyers meet with Miami's top federal prosecutor Alexander Acosta, who would later become the Secretary of Labor in the Trump administration. They secretly negotiate the 'deal of a lifetime'.

June 2008 - After pleading guilty to two prostitution charges, the millionaire was sentenced to 18 months in a low-security prison in exchange for prosecutors ending their investigation into his sex acts with minors and give him immunity from future prosecution related to those charges. In reality, Epstein was able to work from his office six days a week while supposedly incarcerated at the jail.

July 2008 - Accusers learned of the deal for the first time.

July 2009 - Epstein is released from jail five months early.

July 2018 - The Miami Herald publishes investigative journalist Julie K. Brown's exposé on Epstein's long history of alleged sexual abuse and news of the 'deal of a lifetime' after Acosta was made Labor Secretary.

February 2019 - The justice department opens an internal review into Epstein's plea deal.

July 7, 2019 - Epstein is arrested after his private jet lands at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport from Paris. At the same time, federal agents break into his Manhattan townhouse where they uncovered hundreds of photographs of naked minors.

July 8, 2019 - Epstein is charged with sex trafficking charges which detail how he created a network of underage girls in Florida and New York, paying girls as young as 14 to provide 'massages and sex acts.' The charges carry a sentence of up to 45 years in prison.

July 11, 2019 - More than a dozen women, not previously known to law enforcement, came forward to accuse him of sex abuse.

July 24 - Epstein was found unconscious in his cell after an apparent suicide attempt. He was moved to suicide watch at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

August 9, 2019 - More than 2,000 documents are unsealed which reveal the lurid allegations against Epstein in detail.

August 10, 2019 - Epstein is found dead in his cell.

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Re: Billionaire Pedophile Jeffrey Epstein Goes Free

I'm far more interested in the state of play than the history of ideology, especially considering that no matter how eloquent or exquisite those ideologies are, operationally, they are received and amplified as slogans, as images. Window dressing for the exercise of power. What we do is far more telling than anything we have to say: people just fucking talk.

Okay, but you're saying you're a participant in determining how these terms are operatively defined. Why would you want to call someone a liberal who, to be fair, isn't Hitler but is playing Hitler on TV for the lulz, and also doing so to please his base, and also doing so out of more than a little bit of personal conviction as confirmed or at least suggested strongly by earlier stations in his biography? What is the operative effect of that? Why advance this particular (mis)labeling, heavily contrary to what he himself would say of himself? Why, if I may ask it this way, would you want to contribute to the "post-truth" noise?

Also, we agree words and their referents are easily married and divorced, and deployed against the grain strategically, and detourned, and abused, and often abused so they backfire on the abuser. A term like leftist also is applied with annoying flexibility and no particular integrity, and also legitimately can be applied to genuinely contradictory things, depending on time, place, context, speaker, framing, etc. Yet it's maintained enough of a consistency that I don't mind hearing that as a description of my own politics. Also, its current form goes back to something like 1884. Some will argue much earlier, but I'm talking about a visibly organized form originating in that century that has broken apart a couple of times but been reconstituted and continues to develop.

Surprising report about how Ghislaine Maxwell's philanthropy was a scam.

Whatever Happened to Ghislaine Maxwell’s Plan to Save the Oceans?
The philanthropic works of Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend never materialized. Now, she’s being sued by one of his victims.

By surprising I guess I mean that it's at least part investigative, that it's about a rich person's foundation being a scam, which is rare to see covered, and that it talks this much about C.F.R., the faker Branson, and the Clinton foundation.

Also maybe that the bolded bits are phrased this way in the NYT.

In 2014, Ghislaine Maxwell spoke at a Council on Foreign Relations event in Washington, D.C. She was there in her capacity as the founder of the TerraMar Project, an oceanic conservation group she started in 2012, according to a C.F.R. spokeswoman.

The C.F.R. is one of the world’s most prestigious nonprofit think tanks. Among its officers and directors then were David Rockefeller, one of the modern era’s most revered philanthropists; Colin Powell; and Robert Rubin, the secretary of the Treasury under Bill Clinton.

The TerraMar Project was an organization with an opaque website and a founder who happened to be the ex-girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, the mysterious money manager who — in addition to being one of the C.F.R.’s “Chairman’s Circle” donors for at least six years — had pleaded guilty in 2008 to state charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor.

Mr. Epstein spent the next year in county jail, becoming a symbol of the superrich getting away with crimes that seemed likely to send ordinary people to prison for far longer.

Ms. Maxwell herself would be a party to confidential settlements with at least two other people who said that they were victims of Mr. Epstein and that Ms. Maxwell was responsible for recruiting them.

She has never been charged with any crime, and continues to deny wrongdoing. (Attempts to reach her were not successful.) Even before these lawsuits and the C.F.R. talk, her involvement in Mr. Epstein’s operation was cited frequently in the press.

“We were unaware of the allegations against Ms. Maxwell at the time of the event,” the C.F.R. spokeswoman wrote in an email. The spokeswoman added that Mr. Epstein’s membership was revoked in 2009, because he did not pay his membership dues while in jail.

Mr. Epstein, after facing new charges of sex trafficking this year, died in jail on Aug. 10 from what officials said was suicide. And the TerraMar Project has been disbanded, though, according to The New York Post, an F.B.I. probe of it is underway. In the wake of Mr. Epstein’s death, attention now turns to the woman often accused of being his enabler, the striving socialite daughter of a disgraced billionaire.

Philanthropy as Reputation Management
According to tax filings from 2013 to 2017, the organization gave out no money in grants. A representative for the TerraMar Project said in a statement that the work of the organization included helping organize the March for the Ocean in Washington, a campaign to reduce the number of littered cigarette butts and publication of The Daily Catch, an oceanic conservation newsletter. The TerraMar Project also obtained a partnership with the luxury bedding company Yves Delorme on a collection of “water-inspired” sheets, pillowcases and comforters.

Euan Rellie, a British investment banker and society fixture who encountered Ms. Maxwell at events over decades, thought the charity as she explained it to him sounded at least in part to be a form of “reputation management.”

Christopher Mason, a reporter and a longtime friend of Ms. Maxwell’s, said he wondered if her primary motivation for starting the foundation was oceanic conservation or the conservation of Ghislaine Maxwell — creating a “respectable calling card” for someone “whose reputation was in jeopardy.”

And it was in jeopardy. The day before Mr. Epstein’s death, a trove of documents were released in connection with a defamation suit that Virginia Giuffre filed against Ms. Maxwell. Ms. Giuffre said that, at age 16, she was recruited by Ms. Maxwell and forced into being a “sex slave.” Ms. Maxwell called Ms. Giuffre a liar, was sued and settled.

In a deposition, a former maintenance worker at Mr. Epstein’s home described Ms. Maxwell scouting scores of massage spas and parlors in Florida, from Palm Beach to Jupiter, for Mr. Epstein. A college student said she was scouted by Ms. Maxwell, and that she was punished by Ms. Maxwell when she failed to sexually satisfy Mr. Epstein. Now, Jennifer Araoz has filed suit against Ms. Maxwell and others, saying that she was recruited as a freshman in high school and raped by Mr. Epstein.

A Lack of History of Activism

Ms. Maxwell had negligible experience as an environmental activist. Her preferred method of oceangoing was aboard a luxury yacht, which, according to Mr. Mason, was for her the pre-eminent symbol of “status and freedom.” It was through boating that she drew her inspiration for the foundation.

She spent much of her time in the late 1980s on the Lady Ghislaine, a nearly 200-foot boat owned by her father, the media mogul Robert Maxwell. It had a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a gym and private disco. Deep in debt, he bilked the pensions of thousands of his employees, and his body was discovered in the ocean off the Canary Islands, where he had taken the Lady Ghislaine in 1991.

The death was ruled an accident. The family reportedly lost almost everything, including the boat.

Ms. Maxwell, then living in New York, became known for her romantic relationship with Mr. Epstein, who was an all-purpose adviser for the billionaire Leslie Wexner. (Mr. Wexner said in a letter to the Wexner Foundation that, in 2007, he discovered misappropriation of his funds by Mr. Epstein.)

One of Mr. Epstein’s duties was handling contracts for the Limitless, a mammoth yacht bought by Mr. Wexner and designed by Bannenberg & Rowell. Ms. Maxwell was eager to get aboard when it was finished but never did, according to Craig Tafoya, its former captain.

“Ghislaine would always call me and say, ‘I’m coming down to use the boat with some friends. I would always tell her, ‘I have to call the owner. I can’t just let you on the boat.’ And she would never show up,” said Mr. Tafoya, who took this to mean that she never got permission. “She did that half a dozen times. And in talking to a guy who worked for Bannenberg, he said, ‘she does that all the time. She does it when she’s in front of all her girlfriends and wants to brag that she can go use someone’s yacht.’”

Her Plan B

Ted Waitt is the tech billionaire co-founder of Gateway, Inc. who became Ms. Maxwell’s boyfriend after she broke up with Mr. Epstein.

Plan B, the yacht Ms. Maxwell helped him obtain and renovate, brought her to Croatia and the South of France. His check writing helped secure her place at conferences as they replaced benefit galas as the first-tier social gatherings of the late aughts. That was essential to getting the TerraMar Project off the ground.

When he met Ms. Maxwell, Mr. Waitt had a stringy, graying ponytail and wore drab suits. After she became his girlfriend, Mr. Waitt shaved his head, started wearing tinted glasses and became a virtual doppelgänger for Jason Statham.

There was even a submarine put aboard Plan B that Ms. Maxwell knew how to pilot. She began deep-sea diving, which she said is how she had discovered human-made debris all over the ocean floor.

Four people remember Ms. Maxwell talking of journeying to the center of the Pacific Ocean, in an attempt to find, she said, Amelia Earhart’s plane and body.

The conviction of Mr. Epstein and the subsequent bad press for Ms. Maxwell wore on Mr. Waitt, friends said. In 2010, they broke up. But Mr. Waitt had donated at least $10 million to the William J. Clinton Foundation. That helped Ms. Maxwell keep some access to the world of the Clintons. She used connections forged at their summits to help with the 2012 start of the TerraMar Project.

“All the oceans are interconnected and related. It’s all one sea,” Ms. Maxwell said to a reporter for the Mother Nature Network in a 2012 interview. “It’s the one major area of the world where we can be one species with one home and one common destiny.”

The TerraMar website trumpeted the support of well-connected “founding citizens” like Richard Branson and Martine Assouline, a founder of the luxury coffee table books publisher that bears her name.

In 2013, Ms. Maxwell went to Reykjavik and participated in a conference for the Arctic Circle. Scott Borgerson, a former Coast Guard officer and a onetime Council on Foreign Relations fellow, also attended. He also appeared with her at the 2014 talk for the C.F.R., and according to numerous friends of Ms. Maxwell, became her boyfriend. (Three of those friends said she later described him to them as a “Navy SEAL.” Mr. Borgerson declined to comment.)

Around that time, the Clinton Global Initiative announced a “commitment to action” from the TerraMar Project. Little evidence exists that it amounted to much.

The tax returns of the TerraMar Project show that between 2013 and 2017 the organization received $196,000 in public support and paid out, in various expenses, more than $600,000, requiring loans from its president, Ms. Maxwell, totaling $549,093.

The filings do not provide names of the firms or individuals to whom those payments were made; no programs were started for work in the field. No grants were given.

“Over all these returns, not a single dollar,” said Mike Crabtree, a tax partner at Boulay, a C.P.A. firm in Minneapolis. “The returns don’t really show what’s going on, where the money is going and what it’s being used for.”

In 2014, TerraMar’s accounting and legal fees were more than $50,000, an unusually high number given the size and activity of the organization, according to Mr. Crabtree. “I don’t know if ‘suspicious’ is the word I’d use, but to generate those kinds of fees a lot more would have to be going on than this would reflect,” he said.

As Mr. Epstein at last was charged in July with conducting a sex trafficking operation that investigators say resulted in the sexual assault of dozens of minors, the TerraMar Project shut down. It left a farewell message on its website, saying it had sought to “connect ocean lovers to positive actions, highlight science, and bring conscious change to how to people from across the globe can live, work and enjoy the ocean.”

Reading about Epstein's documented and admitted scientific transhumanist eugenics plan does sounds so very classic "Alex Jones/David Icke" wtf, yet real in relation to the New Mexico ranch stuff. Shit, every passing day all the fever swamp conspiracy shit sounds more and more plausible with this case, even the Pizzagate Qanon loons in some aspects. Just hilariously predictable that the right wingers don't dare think their messiah Donnie Trump or his associates in government would have any ties to this case...nope! Only Democrats and da Clintons! Well, seems what we have learned just via the mainstream media with this case is insane and touches upon many layers of classic RI tropes.

I read that link SLAD posted from Daily Beast.....did not expect to see Jack Parsons, Aleister Crowley and L Ron Hubbard in the same sentence of Epstein co-conspirator Ghislane Maxwell, but here we are.
Ghislaine Maxwell's sister married a man named Roger Malina whose dad was literally best friends with Jack Parsons? Wowzas. It's about as wild as President Trump's uncle John Trump literally the guy who was given Tesla's secret plans after they were raided by the government. I used to sometimes scoff at the networks of power links, but there's no reaching for connections here.

As per the Daily Beast link SLAD provided: https://www.thedailybeast.com/jeffrey-e ... of-horrors

That's so reality splitting WTF. It's like over a decade ago when I read how the bin Laden family's main architect was the guy who created the World Trade Center Twin Towers in the late 1960's or how Zacharious Moussoui in the road to 9/11 2001 case literally was connected to the Paul Wellstone plane downing, the Nick Berg Iraq beheading, WTC 1993 and 9/11 itself. These One Degree of Kevin Bacon level associations in this cosmic spiderweb don't appear just to be a word salad parlor game, but seem interconnected for a reason

And also, the fact that there may be several members of Congress, if there’s a congressional investigation that may have been tied up in this, we don’t know all the names.

fwiw...Just a little while ago I viewed this 5 minute 2014 promo/interview w/Maxwell about TerraMar, but in the time it took me to write a post, it was scrubbed on Youtube. :wallhead:

ONEONONE SERIES:GHISLAINE MAXWELL on PROTECTING THE WORLD'S OCEANS

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22Ir8hJ3wIk

To summarize what she said (her words & direct quotes italicized):

....the world can go online to get “ocean passports” and enter TerraMar Project’s full digital platform and let the world know how we’re all joined together in commonality as a community to protect our oceans , because she thinks “the ocean is just too big to fail” and "if the ocean dies", she’s “not sure what the outcome will be but definitely not be good”.

So, I guess Ghislaine's The Sociopath Socialite Who Fell from Grace with the Sea?

eta: Maybe it can be viewed through Daily Mail's link https://www.express.co.uk/videos/397040 ... D-S-OCEANS

was it this one?

back to the prince :)

random facts girl.

What's really funny about the timing of that visit Prince Andrew made to Epstein in early December, 2010?

It's just after Wikileaks made a big dump, which included a cable that discussed Prince Andrew's involvement in....

Kyrgyzstan.

WikiLeaks cables: 'Rude' Prince Andrew shocks US ambassador
Rob EvansFirst published on Mon 29 Nov 2010 12.24 EST
This article is more than 8 years old

Duke railed against France, British anti-corruption investigations into BAE and American ignorance, leaked dispatches reveal

Prince Andrew launched a scathing attack on British anticorruption investigators, journalists and the French during an "astonishingly candid" performance at an official engagement that shocked a US diplomat.

Tatiana Gfoeller, Washington's ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, recorded in a secret cable that Andrew spoke "cockily" at the brunch with British and Canadian business people, leading a discussion that "verged on the rude".

During the two-hour engagement in 2008 at a hotel in the capital, Bishkek, Andrew, who travels the globe as a special UK trade representative, attacked Britain's corruption investigators in the Serious Fraud Office for what he called "idiocy".

He went on to denounce Guardian reporters investigating bribery as "those (expletive) journalists … who poke their noses everywhere".

In the cable from the US embassy to Washington in October 2008, Gfoeller wrote: "Rude language à la British … [Andrew] turned to the general issue of promoting British economic interests abroad. He railed at British anticorruption investigators, who had had the 'idiocy' of almost scuttling the al-Yamama deal with Saudi Arabia."

The prince, she explained, "was referencing an investigation, subsequently closed, into alleged kickbacks a senior Saudi royal had received in exchange for the multi-year, lucrative BAE Systems contract to provide equipment and training to Saudi security forces".

The dispatch continued: "His mother's subjects seated around the table roared their approval. He then went on to 'these (expletive) journalists, especially from the National [sic] Guardian, who poke their noses everywhere' and (presumably) make it harder for British businessmen to do business. The crowd practically clapped."

She said the talk turned at another point to allegations of corruption in the post-Soviet state: "While claiming that all of them never participated in it and never gave out bribes, one representative of a middle-sized company stated that 'it is sometimes an awful temptation'.

"In an astonishing display of candour in a public hotel where the brunch was taking place, all of the businessmen then chorused that nothing gets done in Kyrgyzstan if President [Kurmanbek] Bakiyev's son Maxim does not get 'his cut'.

"Prince Andrew took up the topic with gusto, saying that he keeps hearing Maxim's name 'over and over again' whenever he discusses doing business in this country. Emboldened, one businessman said that doing business here is 'like doing business in the Yukon' in the 19th century, ie only those willing to participate in local corrupt practices are able to make any money … At this point the Duke of York laughed uproariously, saying that: 'All of this sounds exactly like France.'"

The US ambassador, a veteran career diplomat who speaks six languages, did not appear to have great regard for Andrew's intellect.

Her dispatch included some passages noticeably tinged with sarcasm. In a section headed: "You have to cure yourself of anorexia", she wrote: "Again turning thoughtful, the prince mused that outsiders could do little to change the culture of corruption here. They themselves have to have a change of heart. Just like you have to cure yourself of anorexia. No one else can do it for you."

She added: "He reacted with almost neuralgic patriotism whenever any comparison between the US and UK came up. For example, one British businessman noted that despite the 'overwhelming might of the American economy compared to ours' the amount of American and British investment in Kyrgyzstan was similar. Snapped the duke: 'No surprise there. The Americans don't understand geography. Never have. In the UK, we have the best geography teachers in the world!'"

Maxim Bakiyev, whose behaviour Andrew found so amusing, is exiled in the UK. He has hired the London law firm Carter-Ruck to claim political asylum for him. Asked about the claims he took a cut from local enterprises, they said: "Mr Bakiyev absolutely denies the allegation".

Andrew's other forays into central Asia, where he is said to have a good relationship with President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan, have also proved controversial. Ambassador Richard Hoagland cabled in April 2009 his view of political life in Kazakhstan: "Corruption is endemic among Kazakhstani officialdom … Most senior officials live lifestyles that require much higher incomes. In many instances, they receive profits from businesses registered in the names of their spouses or other relatives. In other cases, they're stealing directly from the public trough."

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the president's billionaire son-in-law, Timur Kulibayev, paid Andrew's representatives £15m – £3m over the asking price – via offshore companies, for the prince's Surrey mansion, Sunninghill Park, which he was apparently having difficulty selling.

Kulibayev frequently appears in US dispatches as one of the men who has accumulated millions in gas-rich Kazakhstan. Diplomats recorded that at Kulibayev's 41st birthday in 2007: "The headliner … was Elton John, to whom he reportedly paid £1m for this one-time appearance." There have been separate reports that [singer] Nelly Furtado performed at the August 2007 birthday bash for Kulibayev's wife …

"According to Turkish diplomat Isik, when the Kempinski group recently built luxury villas in Bodrum, Turkey, Kulibayev bought up a number of them – at a cost of $4m-5m each – and doled them out as gifts to friends and family."A Buckingham Palace spokesman said tonight: "We won't be making any comment." Labour MP John Mann told BBC2's Newsnight: "If these comments by Prince Andrew are accurate – and of course we don't know that yet – then clearly it's of public interest that they are out there, so that he can judge whether he is performing the role well and government can make that judgment as well.

"Prince Andrew will need to think through if he is actually carrying out this role to the best of his abilities."

Prince Andrew 'appalled' by sex abuse claims surrounding his paedophile friend Jeffrey Epstein
Prince Andrew 'deplores exploitation' and 'the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behaviour is abhorrent', statement said
Prince Andrew's efforts to distance himself from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal were thrown into turmoil last night as details emerged of how he hosted the paedophile and his entourage at Balmoral.

One of the young women on the trip told the Daily Mail how the prince personally welcomed the party to the castle in mid-1999 – after the disgraced US financier had already begun recruiting dozens of underage girls as sex slaves.

It comes after revelations that Andrew even visited Epstein – who killed himself in prison this month – at his home in New York in 2010. This was two years after Epstein had been convicted of sex with a child.

Last night, Prince Andrew said he was 'appalled' by the allegations about Epstein.

Exclusive: Prince Andrew seen waving off lady at Epstein's home

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: 'The Duke of York has been appalled by the recent reports of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged crimes.

'His Royal Highness deplores the exploitation of any human being and the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behaviour is abhorrent.'

In footage from 2010 published by The Mail on Sunday, the Duke of York was shown grinning from the doorway of Epstein's mansion – dubbed the 'House of Horrors' by some of his victims – as a number of very young women leave and enter.

He is seen waving a woman goodbye after Epstein leaves to get in a chauffeur-driven car.

Speaking on condition of anonymity yesterday, the woman who joined Epstein at Balmoral 20 years ago recalled making 'chitchat' with the prince.

'He was really nice. He was very polite. [He had his] guard up,' said the woman, who was then a model in her 20s.

She told how the group stayed overnight at the 52-bedroom castle, and spent the following day being entertained in the grounds.

The visit is thought to have taken place in late summer or early autumn – when the Queen is likely to have been in residence.

Epstein and his entourage visited the estate as part of a week-long trip to the UK, during which they also stayed at the London home of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's ex-partner who has been accused of lining up underage girls for him to have sex with.

The woman who joined them on the trip – not long after she had started giving sexual massages to Epstein – recalled how she had felt like she was in a 'fairytale', brushing with royalty. But now she says she had no idea why she was ever included in the visit.

'Why was I really there?' she said. 'Did [Epstein] really enjoy my company all that much or was I being prepped to end up being sent out like a gift to some people?'

She avoided any plans Epstein may have had for her that evening by retiring to bed early.

Nearly a year later, in June 2000, Epstein and Miss Maxwell attended a party at Windsor Castle hosted by the Queen to mark Andrew's 40th birthday, Princess Anne's 50th, Princess Margaret's 70th and Prince William's 18th.

In 2001, Andrew met another member of Epstein's entourage, Virginia Roberts, who claims she was on a trip to London with the financier when she met Andrew and had sex with him in a bath.

Miss Roberts claims she slept with Andrew three times – in London and New York – when she was 17.

The claims, submitted to a court in 2014, were thrown out by a judge as 'immaterial and impertinent'.

Andrew has vehemently denied any sexual encounters with her.

Buckingham Palace has said: 'Any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue. It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts.'

However, he remains haunted by a photograph taken with her on the London trip, with his arm around Miss Roberts's bare midriff.

Yesterday, the woman who Andrew welcomed to Balmoral said the photo 'sickened' her.

She spent almost a year in Epstein's orbit, joining him on about a dozen trips. He gave her a place to live in New York, rent-free, and later paid for her to go to college.

She initially met Epstein through her work as a model. The second time they met, on a trip to Palm Beach, he asked her to give her a massage. It quickly turned sexual.

'We fooled around a bit. I never had intercourse with him,' she said.

Epstein killed himself in jail this month after being accused of sexually abusing a string of underage girls.

Andrew has been dogged by accusations of a lack of judgment about his links with Epstein.

The Duke quit his role as UK trade envoy after fallout from photos of him with the billionaire in Central Park.

A spokesman for Prince Andrew declined to comment on the Balmoral visit.

One of the young women on the trip told the Daily Mail how the prince personally welcomed the party to the castle (above) in mid-1999 – after the disgraced US financier had already begun recruiting dozens of underage girls as sex slaves

Inside the 'House of Horrors'

Visitors to Jeffrey Epstein's 'House of Horrors' were confronted by 'creepy' interior decor, including artificial eyeballs and a portrait of Bill Clinton in a dress.

The entry foyer to the Manhattan mansion, where Prince Andrew is standing in the video, was decorated with fake eyeballs.

Even more bizarre is a portrait of former US president Clinton – a friend of Epstein – in heels and the infamous stained blue dress worn by Monica Lewinsky when she performed a sex act on him.

There were prosthetic breasts on the wall of a bathroom for Epstein to play with, according to one of his victims.

His study had photos of his famous friends – including Woody Allen, who has been accused of child sexual assault – as well as a stuffed tiger and a poodle.

Behind his desk was a painting of a topless woman by artist Kees van Dongen, bought for $6million in 2004.

But Epstein's sinister 'pride and joy' was a gigantic chessboard with scantily-clad figurines modelled on his female staff.

In Bishkek. 2008.

So funny.

Kvetching about UK Anti-Corruption investigators that interfered with a Saudi arms deal?

Image
Aside from diminishing the corruption in late-naughts Kyrgyz political and business spheres, particularly when reference made to Maxim Bakiyev....

Whose ancestors did business in the Yukon again?

Image
Oh.
Right.

Image
OH WAIT.

That sure looks like Trump and Melania are wearing the same clothes here as in the photo with Andrew.

And on the same date, too.

Image

I guess they were all just there for the tennis, though.
Right?

Image
I digress.

But I'll come back to Kyrgyzstan later. For sure.

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.
