Don’t Call the Police, Call Your Neighbors!

Here is a hard truth: Police do not keep communities safe.
This year alone has produced numerous stories of officers causing distress, damage, or death in communities they’re sworn to protect. As this epidemic worsens, communities need to find new ways to handle crisis situations without police intervention.
Modern U.S. police forces evolved from watch systems developed in the early colonies, which were gradually professionalized after the emergence of cities — and the rise of slavery. In the South, these forces were used as “slave patrols,” tasked with catching runaway slaves and squashing uprisings.
The role of police has greatly expanded since then, with officers intervening in everything from mental health crises to routine schoolyard incidents. With police now receiving military-grade weapons and often legally insulated from accountability, citizens are at the mercy of choices officers make — decisions that may be made under extreme distress or tainted with bias.
Black Americans are most at risk. Compared to other demographics, we face a significantly higher risk of being killed by police. Just this year Black Americans have

140 Days After the Perfect Crime
By Daniel Hopsicker -
November 5, 2019
It’s been 140 days since the second largest drug bust in American history went down in the waters off-shore of the Port of Philadelphia. Agents from a multi-agency Federal task force swarmed aboard a two block-long container ship, the MSC GAYANE, the second largest in the world.
It marked the beginning of Containergate.

They found 20 tons of cocaine sprawled across seven individual shipping containers. It was a truly massive amount, the largest single seizure in the 230-year history of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, the agency said.
There was so much cocaine that only one-fourth of the haul could be crammed into the lobby of the venerable old U.S. Custom House

FBI Events Mark 100 Years Since First African-American Special Agent ... 0912469331

Eyes to My Soul: The Rise or Decline of a Black FBI Agent
by Tyrone Powers (Author)

Former FBI Special Agent Tyrone Powers, a veteran of the Maryland State Police, spent nine years as an FBI agent, with postings in Cincinnati and Detroit. He resigned in August 1994.
The picture of the country's top law enforcement agency that emerges from Powers' eloquent prose reveals an organization beset by the same problems of racism that plague the rest of American society. Powers describes sheet-clad students at the FBI Academy impersonating Ku Klux Klansmen. He reports on FBI Agents in Detroit raising funds for white Detroit policemen charged with (and later convicted of) second degree murder in the death of Black motorist Malice Green. White agents on one occasion substituted the face of an ape on the photo of an African American agent's children, displayed on their Black colleague's desk.
White agents, according to Powers' narrative, urinated on photographs of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. Powers provides eyewitness evidence of the agency's extralegal harassment of African American mayors Coleman Young (Detroit), Marion Barry (Washington, DC) and Harold Washington (Chicago).
His story parallels similar complaints of harassment voiced in recent years by the Congressional Black Caucus and in the 1960s by Civil Rights workers. The FBI's Counter Intelligence Program of surveillance, disruption and assassinations against the Black movement of the 1960s and 1970s (COINTELPRO), has received wide coverage in recent years.
Former Special Agent Powers grew up in inner city Baltimore and his autobiographical recollections combine the sociologist's insight with the novelist's flair for storytelling. The problems of the inner city are presented in all theirunvarnished starkness. There was drug dealing, violence, gang feuds and incest in the experience of an inner city youth growing to manhood. Some of it was very close to home. ... 00211.html

FBI agent guilty of sex abuse

Was bureau's chief of internal affairs

|  February 18, 2004
WASHINGTON -- The former chief internal watchdog at the FBI has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl and has admitted he had a history of molesting other children before he joined the bureau for what became a two-decade career.
John H. Conditt Jr., 53, who retired in 2001, was sentenced last week in Tarrant County Court in Fort Worth to 12 years in prison after he admitted he molested the daughter of two FBI agents after he retired. He acknowledged molesting at least two other girls before he began his law enforcement career, his lawyer said.
Conditt sought treatment for sex offenders after his arrest last year, said his attorney, Toby Goldsmith.

Georgia city settles year-long open records lawsuit
On October 28th, the City of Roswell, Georgia settled a Georgia Open Records Act lawsuit with Appen Media Group. The lawsuit, which had gone on for nearly a year, accused the Roswell Police Department of consistently withholding “vital information about criminal incidents” from release and failing to meet time requirements for supplying records. Initially, Roswell’s attorneys claimed that the city was protected by “the doctrine of sovereign immunity,” which states that the government cannot be sued without its consent. However, Appen launched a GoFundMe, which raised $4,220 and helped sustain the lawsuit.
The settlement agreement, unanimously passed by Roswell’s City Council, involves the city paying Appen $10,500 in attorney’s fees and “a year’s worth of free open records requests.” The settlement also includes the city admitting no liability in the alleged public records wrongdoings.

Buzzfeed’s big week: Mueller probe documents and an overturned GLOMAR
This FOIA round-up would not be complete without discussing arguably the largest FOIA story of the week, which one could argue is either of the big FOIA wins from BuzzFeed News this week.
Reporters there obtained a treasure trove of FBI docs in response to five different FOIA lawsuits. The first installment ordered released by a court featured FBI 302 reports from the Mueller investigation, the summaries of interviews with White House and Trump campaign officials.
Through the materials, BuzzFeed News found Paul Manafort was “pushing the conspiracy theory that Ukraine hacked the DNC as early as 2016” and that, according to Rick Gates, then-candidate Donald Trump, following the DNC hack, told Gates that “more leaks were coming.” Many more revelations were reported by BuzzFeed News, and the documents have led to reporting by many other news outlets.
You can join in on the fun. BuzzFeed News says: “We want your help! If you see something in these memos, you can email reporter Jason Leopold at or reach us securely at”

Coming on the heels of weeks of unrest in Chile, this week’s coup in Bolivia has obvious geopolitical ramifications, as well as echoes of that country’s infamous ‘Cocaine Coup’ in 1980.
While researching “Barry & ‘the boys,” I spent time with a man who had been U.S. pro-consul in Bolivia in the 1980’s, and a close associate of Barry Seal.
In the book he was identified with a pseudonym, ‘Gus’. Since deceased, I can now use his name: Russ Eakin.
Our NSA source “Gus” was a steely-eyed man dressed, when we first met him, in a tight-fitting olive drab t-shirt. He entered the restaurant where we were to rendezvous, Dan B’s in Bay St. Louis on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, unnoticed…
“I was asked if I was interested in taking a trip to Honduras in the summer of 1964,” he began, sliding into a chair and anticipating our first question.

‘The Plot to Betray America: How Team Trump Embraced Our Enemies, Compromised Our Security, and How We Can Fix It’ by Malcolm Nance Photo credit: Malcolm Nance and Hachette Books

In this week’s WhoWhatWhy podcast, MSNBC counterterrorism analyst and bestselling author Malcolm Nance talks in detail about how Donald Trump has, in his view, betrayed the nation as an asset in a Russian plot to place a Kremlin-friendly US president in power.
Nance argues that the effort to seduce Trump began as far back as the late 1970s. He explains why Trump began, even then, to develop a worldview that was Russia-centric and how he became beholden to Putin.
According to Nance, Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort was a key figure and an even more vital link between Trump and Russia than previously thought.
Nance details how Putin made the turn from being a hardcore Communist believer in the old Soviet Union to an even stronger practitioner of fascism and financial manipulation, and how this proved to be the ideal combination for ensnaring Trump.
In this conversation with Jeff Schechtman, Nance talks about what he sees as an emerging international alliance of autocrats of which Trump seeks to be a member — an alliance whose goals are the destruction of NATO, the dissolution of the European Union, and the abandoning of American allies in Syria and the wider Middle East.
In this far-ranging conversation, Nance reveals how Putin’s’ intelligence skills were honed in East Germany and how the Russian leader would have used years of KGB surveillance on Trump to manipulate the US president into an easily recruitable asset. ... winters-2/

If you are shivering in a freezing, snow-blanketed part of the world, global warming might seem like a fine thing to have. But, believe it or not, you can thank global warming for this cold weather.
The summer of 2019 was the hottest on record in the northern hemisphere, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). And there were other extremes this summer — severe drought in India, rains and record floods in the American Midwest, devastating fires in the American West and in Australia. And now the cold.
It seems as if we’re trading weather with the Arctic. We send up our hot air — and the Arctic sends down its cold air.
But here’s a more scientific explanation: It’s all about the jet stream, a ribbon of fast-moving air that flows west to east over the Northern Hemisphere. NOAA defines it this way: “Jet streams are the major means of transport for weather systems. A jet stream is an area of strong winds ranging from 120–250 mph that can be thousands of miles long, a couple of hundred miles across and a few miles deep… This means most jet streams are about 6–9 miles off the ground.”
But how does it work? And why does it make the summers warmer and the winters colder? Please see the story below for answers.
Recent headlines on climate events should make things difficult for the average global warming/climate change ... n-11394846

Justices Consider FBI Agent Liability In No-Fly List Case
Law360, Washington (November 22, 2019, 3:24 PM EST) -- The Supreme Court on Friday took up a case examining whether a group of Muslim men can rely on a law protecting religious freedom to seek damages from individual FBI agents who allegedly put them on the no-fly list in retaliation for refusing to become informants in a terrorism investigation. The high court granted a petition from the federal government to review a Second Circuit ruling that the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act allows plaintiffs to seek money damages from individual federal officials. The court did not explain why it took the case, as is typical. The government argues that when Congress. . .
