Engine fire led to Ukrainian Boeing 737 crash in Iran - airport official
A Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 had suffered an engine malfunction before it went down a few minutes after taking off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini airport, an airport official has said.
The engine caught fire when the plane was airborne, Ali Khashani, a senior public relations official at Iran’s major airport, was quoted by local media. The fatal engine failure is thought to have caused the jet to come down, between the cities of Sharhiar and Parand in the early hours of Wednesday.
The airliner, operated by Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), carried 176 passengers and nine crew, most of whom were Iranians, according to Reza Jafarzadeh, a spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s diplomatic mission in Iran said later on Wednesday that "any statements regarding the causes of the accident prior to the decision of the [investigative] commission are not official."

Iraq PM Abdel Mahdi says he received signed US 'withdrawal' letter on Monday

Iraq’s premier Adel Abdel Mahdi confirmed Tuesday that he had received what the US said was a draft letter describing steps its military would take to “move out” of Iraq.

The Pentagon had said an unsigned draft version of the letter had been mistakenly sent, but the Iraqi premier disputed that claim.
In a cabinet meeting televised on Tuesday evening, Abdel Mahdi said he had received signed and translated copies at 8:00pm local time (1700 GMT) Monday.
The letter discussed “redeploying with an aim to withdraw from the country. The expressions were very clear,” he said.
The Iraqi prime minister said preliminary versions received in Arabic and English included a translation mistake, so his office requested a correction from the US military and new versions were duly sent.
“It was an official letter written in such a manner,” Abdel Mahdi told ministers.
“It’s not a piece of paper that fell off the printer or reached us by coincidence,” he said.

AFP received a copy of the letter late Monday and verified its authenticity with both US and Iraqi officials.
In it, the head of Task Force-Iraq US Brigadier General William Seely informed his Iraqi counterparts that American troops were preparing to leave Iraq.
Seely wrote the US-led coalition would “be repositioning forces in the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement.”
“In order to conduct this task, Coalition Forces are required to take certain measures to ensure that the movement out of Iraq is conducted in a safe and efficient manner,” said the letter.
It said helicopters would be travelling in and around Baghdad’s Green Zone where the US embassy is located as part of the preparations.
AFP could hear helicopters flying low over Baghdad throughout the night on Monday as well as Tuesday.

Iraqi PM confirms receiving US letter, requests clarifications
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF JANUARY 7, 2020 20:36
Iraq has received a letter from the U.S. army concerning the withdrawal of its troops from the country, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Tuesday.
The English and Arabic language versions of the letter are not identical, so Iraq has requested clarifications, he added. The Iraqi parliament [unanimously] backed a resolution requesting the withdrawal of all foreign troops from the country after a U.S. military drone killed Iran's top military commander last Friday, igniting a regional crisis.

Curious.
We're totally speculating in the wind here but hey, it's RI, that never stopped any of us. It does look like the wheels are falling off because they are. All of this stuff has been crisis manifestations, ever since the start of the current round of nightmares. (Should we date it to 2016 or the 2007-9 crash?) On nothing but feeling I'd think none of these factions have the balls. Maybe they'll keep resigning and "whistleblowing" until a point when any human not named Trump would decide the game was over. Except he'd stick around. I'd expect HIM to try the coup, because playing a Hitler is the formula for eventually trying it on for real. Also, within the natsec complex he's currently the only one with an actual base in the population. Back in 2016 I expected they'd off him if he won and was too disastrous for the image and coherence of the empire (by "natural causes"), but from here it looks like he's got a consensus of the current imperialist dip-shit executive level, who seem to average out dumber than at any point ever (and let's NOT exaggerate what they're like at their smartest).
‘High confidence’ that Ukraine plane hit by Iranian air-defense missile, U.S. official says

MOSCOW — U.S. officials have “high confidence” that an Iranian antiaircraft missile brought down a Ukrainian passenger jet near Tehran, killing all 176 aboard, a U.S. official said. Here’s what we know:
●President Trump said the plane downing was likely a “mistake.” European intelligence officials reached the same assessment.
●Iran’s antiaircraft systems includes Russian-made Tor missiles.
●Ukraine’s investigators include specialists who helped investigate the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was hit by a missile over a rebel-held area of Ukraine.
●Iran will not send flight data recorders with Boeing for analysis, but U.S. investigators may take part in the probe.

the missile operators could have mistaken it for a hostile aircraft.

I'm leaning towards unintentional downing. Iran would have no reason to do it on purpose, the US is saying it was accidental, which they wouldn't if it was a false flag, and the plane was an hour late departing, so the missile operators could have mistaken it for a hostile aircraft. It wouldn't be the first time it happened either.

The video is whatever it is, but you do know Bellingcat is the Atlantic Council in person, right?
