I was thinking about when alice is talking to humpty dumpty, and says, "the question is, whether you can make words mean so many different things.” And Humpty Dumpty replies, "The question is, which is to be master—that’s all.”
As I figure it, this is not very different than what I'm talking about in the posts above that griz is bored with. The questions are an invitation to the reader to answer one way or another. A reader who knows there is no question as to how words are made to mean things, doesn't take the invitation.
There is "say what you mean," and "mean what you say." When the two come together, the words say exactly what they mean, and mean exactly what they say. But in a looking glass world, it's very hard to do.
