Bimbo's Initiation

Post by orz »

Thought some of you might be amused/interested/worried by this cartoon... Betty Boop's pal Bimbo gets unwillingly initiated into a really odd secret society!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=R...ed&search=

I love youtube...

Poor Bimbo - that's nightmarish!

Here's my youtube contribution: a Bono parody tribute to 'Snakes on a Plane'

I *love* that cartoon. That and Snow White are my favorite Betty Boops. And it's obviously making fun of the whole secret society thing -- so don't you *dare* say anything sinister about it.

(Wanna be a member? That cartoon has a sinister feel to me for some reason. I think it might have been showing in the background in the movie the Twilight Zone sometime during the segment with the little kid who has special powers and teleports his sister into the cartoon playing on tv.

Apparently secret society initiations used to be pretty brutal: www.phoenixmasonry.org/ma.../index.htm

I can only infer that people were much less inclined to sue back then. And speaking of things that would assure a lawsuit today, but evidently not back then, did anyone notice who it was that locked poor Bimbo down the manhole?

-Sepka the Space Weasel

Edited by: Sepka at: 6/27/06 5:15 am

Yeah, it was Mickey Mouse

What a totally weird 'toon. I am a little stunned at the not-so-subtle sexual innuendos. Lots of phallic symbols. Geesh.

Betty Boop cartoons never appealed to me when I was a child. I was more of a Moose and Squirrel fan.

Where these cartoons aimed at an audience of all ages?

Cool link orz
I got "Banned Cartoons - Betty Boop - 1931 Minnie The Moocher(Cab Calloway)BETTY BOOP .mpg" off gnutella P2P and I'm sure there's a lot more. It's equally disturbing esp. considering the time it was made.

btw does anyone know a way to record clips from youtube and google?

and does anyone know where "Underwear must go inside the pants" is available as youtube has lost it?

I remember seeing Betty on TV in the 80s... 1980s UK that is, and two minute edits of the originals, played as kids cartoons. They didn't seem too risque then but looking back they were a bit more so than tweety pie and Wacky Races.
Haven't seen much since.

There are quite a few inferior later ones where they toned it down a lot... and yeah, any number of censored, recoloured and otherwise compromised versions around...

Early warner bros stuff is more adult to... early everything in fact... before the Hayes code and all that stuff spoiled the fun

To save video from google or youtube, amongst a host of others, try this link...

javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

There's others out there, but I've had no problems with this one so far.

Here's an archive of SOME of this stuff that might be better off languishing in obscurity:

www.angelfire.com/comics/mov/banned.html

Though it is important to see how Racism was considered a humorous vehicle for plot device in those long-ago unenlightened times.

HA HA HA....right?

Much the way that we laugh at those CRAAAAZZZEEE political foibles
on The Daily Show

Yeah, I noticed it was Mickey Mouse who locked him into the sewer manhole. I wonder what that was about?

hmmm yeah, the situation with the various 'racist' banned cartoons is not so cut + dried... certainly some pretty offensive stuff in this day + age, but also some of the greatest cartoon animation of all time!

Should definitely be preserved for artistic merit as well as historical purposes.

Plus, it's not like they were made by a bunch of KKK types or something... cartoons such as Bob Clampett's legendary "Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs" came about due to his genuine enthusiasm for and involvement with the jazz scene, and were made with the input and cooperation of black musicians and artists...
