Why are the Portugese letting themselves be bullied by England? Unless Portugal has it own elite pedophile ring to cover up...
oh they do, they do:
On November 27, 2002, The Guardian reported that many among Portugal's elite were linked to a pedophile ring as well: "A scandal over a paedophile ring run from a state orphanage gripped Portugal yesterday as it threatened to engulf diplomats, media personalities and senior politicians. Photographs of unnamed senior government officials with young boys from Lisbon's Casa Pia orphanage were among the evidence reportedly available to police after they arrested a former orphanage employee called Carlos Silvino." One revelation in the case was "that systematic sexual abuse of children at the home had allegedly been going on for more than 20 years and had been known to police and other authorities for most of that time." Teresa Costa Macedo, a former secretary of state for families, has said that she sent a dossier to police twenty years ago containing "damning proof" of the abuse, including photographs and eyewitness statements. The information was not acted upon, and, for her trouble, Macedo became the victim of a campaign of threats and intimidation.
In June 2003, the Independent reported that police "at first denied her reports existed," but then later produced them. Macedo has testified before parliament that the former president, Antonio Ramalho Eanes, the former foreign secretary, Jaime Garcia, and elements within the police all knew of the ongoing abuse. An official report claims that, "among the children still living at Casa Pia, at least 128 had been subjected to sexual abuse. Many are deaf and dumb." Countless other victims have passed through the facility over the last thirty years. Among those detained or questioned in the case were Carlos Cruz, known in Portugal as "Mr. Television"; Manuel Abrantes, a former director of Casa Pia; Joao Ferreira Diniz, a doctor at Casa Pia; Jorge Ritto, a former ambassador to UNESCO; Hugo Marcal, Carlos Silvino's former attorney; Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, Portugal's Socialist Party leader; television talk show host Herman Jose; and Paulo Pedroso, a former Labour minister.
A follow-up report in the Independent noted that Casa Pia, founded by a police superintendent, first "came under scrutiny 20 years ago when a young inmate died . Officials found the home's doors open all night and youngsters in a cruising area for male prostitutes. Four children aged between eight and 12, missing for a fortnight, were found in a luxury flat in nearby Cascais owned by a diplomat." That diplomat was Jorge Ritto. It is now alleged that Silvino, an employee and former resident of Casa Pia, acted for years to procure young boys for rich and powerful pedophiles, including Ritto. Adolescent witnesses have claimed on Portuguese television that they were offered enticements and "then raped . and recruited for sex parties with powerful 'friends.' Others, now adult, have told of chilling experiences long suppressed." A Portuguese organization calling itself Innocence in Danger has been working for years to publicize the problem of child abuse and child abductions in the country, but have been unable to penetrate what they describe as a "media blackout."

They're not being bullied by England.
They are being bullied by the United Kingdom, or Britain. There is a big difference.
I'm English. But I'm not British.
As for the bullying. Same as with the Russians, at least until yesterday, when the BBC got kicked out.
The English speakers dominate the international narrative. And they use that dominance to promulgate their propaganda.
I live on the island of Gran Canaria. In the last year two children went missing. Sara, aged fourteen. And Yeremi, aged seven. But what do we get on our television? The hunt for Madeleine!
I read a Comment is free thread on this case a short while ago. People were moaning about the Portugese police, and how Scotland Yard should take over.
Then someone wondered if the Brazilian police should take over the De Menezes case, since the British didn't seem to do a good job.

The article on Portugal was very informative. I'm sure nobody has gone to prison. And, my god, there's a whole forum devoted to this case?! I wish I had time to read through it all and get up to speed. I don't know that much about it, and wasn't very interested, other than the usual horror you feel when you hear about a missing child.
So, for those who have followed it, have you come to a conclusion?
The whole thing is so Jon Benet - another case that remains a mystery.
Does anyone know if there are any websites exclusively devoted to tracking these international abduction/pedophile scandals? I'll bet some flow charts would prove to be useful.

From tal's link:
According to the BBC, Nihoul has brazenly claimed: "I am the monster of Belgium." He has all but dared the state to prosecute him, claiming that he is beyond the reach of the law because he has information that, if made public, "would bring the Government and the entire state down."

11:11 That was exactly how it resonated with me.
I went from no great interest to bafflement about the very one-sided news we were getting ,to bewildered confusion....which is where I currently stand
There is a whole forum on it becasue so many people have been struck by the news management and that in itself has made them more and more curious.
The immaculate PR job, the government assistance, the lawyers, the web-site that manages to give you no sense of the individuality of this little girl (not even a physical decription) the fund and it's purpose, the search that somehow isn't a search etc etc .
Currently British papers are slowly dripping in bits of news that have been available in Portugal and Spain for a weeks. Babel-fish translations and Portugeese judicial policy have rendered some of their statements into a gnomic and baffling code, which has itself spawned more ruminations .
Thanks Tal for your links.

My best guess:
A group of middle class friends (mainly doctors) go on holiday. They spend their evenings drinking at various establishments up to 1 km away while leaving their children unattended in their apartments (on the night in question 'only' 150 metres away - where nine of them got through 14 bottles of wine in an hour). On earlier nights the children are heard crying and complaints are made, but they refuse baby sitting.
So on the night in question they sedate them (Dr. Kate was an anaesthesist), but it goes horribly wrong and they cook up up a cover story.
The weirdness comes from the huge media/PR/ high level cover up circus which ensues. I suspect this relates not directly to the events in Portugal but to something else in the background of one or more of them. (The extent of the manipulation is huge - google news links disappearing, total absence of any critical coverage in the British media, etc.Normally leaving your children unattended while off boozing would result in a media lynching.)
Although also strange is Dr. Kate's reported "They've taken her" remark when she first missed the child.
I put their strange demeanour in interviews etc. down to self-medication.
The only resolution I can see which will satisfy the British media is some poor bemused Usual Suspect spending the rest of his life in a Portugese jail.

I had MSNBC on yesterday (Sat.) around 8am.
One of their major headlines was that the McCann case had been solved according to police, because of evidence found in the cars of the parents and the main suspect.
I had it on for the rest of the morning and the story wasn't repeated again. I found that odd.

the resourcefulness and dedication of the McCann family in keeping the story alive is apparently being held against them in some quarters. Why?
Who would be served by the news of yet another child being abducted fading?
The industry of child abuse is protected, we are not supposed to notice this. We are supposed to be taken in by the usual flurries of investigation, which usually get nowhere, or at best finally give us a 'lone predator' to hate, all the other leads being conveniently brushed under the mat. (as in Dutroux case, West case , Holly and Jessica case)
Three attempts to derail attention from the nub of the story have so far been made:-
1. parents fault, who would leave a child etc etc (sub text - sad, but your child is safe because you'd have a babysitter)
2. look at the money/publicity machine - is this the response you'd expect bla bla (several sub texts, plays on reverse snobbery, envy and resentment of people in a position to drum up that much support)
3. blood on wall of appartment, first we're told it tells us the child is dead, then we're told its not hers, then we're told nothing ( sub text better shut up in case we're supporting people who aren't what they seem. how embarassing would that be )
every time a child goes missing or a survivor reports severe abuse, the same smokescreens go up. every time a carer or victim gets too demanding and wants real investigation and answers, they get smeared.
I don't know what has happened to little Madeleine, but I do know that there is a gaping hole in the investigation of abduction.
archie - defamatory guesswork serves what purpose exactly?
