Re: The "show off your Avatar" thread
My avatar is actually made up of four distinct shots. The galaxy off in the distance, Einstein in the foreground, and two star fields carefully overlaid.
Originally I wanted to animate the galaxy in rotation, but found that the resulting GIF file was just too big. That was a good six years ago, and the avatar has been with me ever since on 90% of the boards and sites I frequent.
To me it portrays the honest thoughtful mystery than makes up our existence. The seeming contradictions which nevertheless coexist. The two star field photographs which are overlaid [look at the area between Einstein's arms and head] have completely different depth of field and therefore a real photo with the same affect could never have been taken. With the assistance of the computer these contradictions exist in one picture for all to see. The magic is in the minutia. No one else may ever noticed this, but I know it's there. It was fun to put together that way.
One last thing. The avatar comes from the very old dedicated server sitting just behind the bathroom door in a tiny little room. Occasionally throughout the year, you may see a change spontaneously.--I'm a Geek And I Love this Stuff!
At the end of the day, it is your friends and things you have learned that matter.

Keeping with my rebellion against the empire motif, I decided to include the current cigarette smoking trend here at RI. I might go back to the Atari 2600 AT-AT though. I liked that one.

Yeah. It's a screencap from a Star Wars documentary I recently saw. Han is totally smoking in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon there!

I've gone different, my first change. Much like my old one, but all monochrome.

seemslikeadream, your latest avatar is as thought provoking for me as your location "playing in traffic" is hilarious. Was I

What a great thread!
... I met this guy in Chongqing. It goes without saying that an overwhelming number of people in China struggle to make-do and they generally work a great wall's worth harder than I have so far ever had to. That said, this guy, a really gracious and friendly person who didn't mind at all when I plonked myself down to watch him work a bit and try out some of my terrible Mandarin, is a real master teacher of something deeper that includes the cultivation of joy through the endeavour of life ...

I think about how hard I am working/will work to learn to listen and read, speak and write Chinese ...
...

^^^ This is the source of the avatar I introduced myself with, but coming across this thread made me go digging for the originals ...
What a beautiful guy, really.

He smiled with me a lot, but this was the only picture I got of his smile; I was mad when I saw the blurr and bad focus...

Now I think it's okay. He is very much being in motion, so it suits him. I messed with it in search of the painting it might be and decided, I wanted him smiling back at me.

LOL! It never occurred to me that belonging to the 'commonwealth' could include the delight of such an 'inside joke'...Nordic wrote:Funny, when I first saw your avatar, I thought it was just some old woman forced by economic hardship to work at McDonalds.
Just some old woman, indeed.

Okay, the armless guy is pretty amazing, but I couldn't help but notice he had a pack of smokes.
