You can tell a thread is potentially heading for trouble when you see so many quote boxes within quote boxes it looks like a fractal. Also when someone takes a post, splits it into separate sentences, and responds to each one. When I find myself going there, I know it's time to take a step back, let some water pass under the bridge. Just a general rule of thumb I find helpful.

I imagine TPTB have someone stationed at every moral decision point to gently remind the wannabees with the stock quote: U know What We Want or some derivation of that. As the pyramid to power can only be climbed in one direction, those closer to power or in this case closer to the art of propagandizing for the rewards of pleasing power, are self regulated by the history of their journey. I doubt that anyone needs specific instruction. I also doubt that in terms of the entertainment industry, time sensitive, specific outcomes are required, unlike in the political realm. In general, in the cultural vortex, random and/or chaotic results are encouraged, much like tying branches to the back of your horse to confuse any trackers, or just for fun. Her reluctance to make reductive pronouncements without showing how she arrived at them, her ability to consider a problem from many angles while still showing patience and respect for those who don't or can't, and her willingness always to do the hard work of reviewing a subject thoroughly and digging up the relevant information for us are all admirable. Even more admirable are the goodness and humanity of the fine mind that shines through in most of her comments here. Not that she's a saint. She's also very good at undressing idiocy with the subtlest in snark, which is entertaining for the way it usually goes over the head of its targets, although that shouldn't be called admirable. She may be a touch too reluctant to punch out unredeemable idiocy, instead of continuing to offer therapy far longer than the idiocy merits. The offer is almost never appreciated. In my own thinking, I try to meet the standards she sets for diligence, circumspection and logic. She's a gift.

RI has never been predominantly about free speech. It exists to foster better speech, especially but not exclusively with respect to controversial knowledge. I believe proscribing certain speech and conspiracy memes has helped foster an ethos that makes this place uncommonly valuable by attracting peculiarly intelligent and literate members. I know this can hit you libertarians where it hurts, but a good deal of RI's distinctiveness resides in what has not been permitted, both by guidelines and general consensus…
