Israeli Army: We use Gaza military operation to test new weapons

The Cast Lead Operation commander speaks bluntly on the Israel's view of Gaza as an 'ideal training zone' for its soldiers and weaponry

Saleh Naami , Wednesday 4 May 2011

Israel used the war in Gaza in 2008 as a training opportunity for its armed forces to test new weapons, designate Israeli military chief of staff has revealed.

In a speech at the Begin-Sadat Center of Strategic Affairs at Bar-Ilan University, Major General Yoav Galant said that Gaza was an “ideal training zone” as it lacks a strong enemy that could inflict serious casualties upon Israel.

Galant was the operation commander of Israel's Cast Lead Operation on Gaza between December 2008 and January 2009 in which more than 1600 Palestinians were killed. Most of the fatalities were among women and children.

Under his command, the Israeli armed forces openly used white phosphorus shells fired from 155mm artillery guns in the crowded Gaza Strip which were .

“Although Israel's military capability is much stronger than [that of] Hamas, we consider them as our fiercest enemy,” he said.

Galant added that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip had improved their rocket firing capabilities, asserting that firing rockets “isn’t only an act of terror, it is a challenge to Israel's very existence.”

With regards to the wave of Arab uprisings, Galant expressed his view that that none of the ongoing revolutions in the Middle East have any positive short or long-term potential for the future of Israel’s security.

Galant expects that the region will represent a major instability threat as in his opinion it will be ruled by radical “Islamic extremists.”

What a bunch of goddamn psychotic sadistic criminals. This is one of the sickest things I've ever read.

How useful, to have a laboratory where you can measure precisely how long phosphorous takes to burn a baby's flesh to the bone, or the sound human bones make, when you crush people under a tank.

Galant was initially chosen in to succeed Gabi Ashkenazi as the next Chief of General Staff in 2011 by Defense Minister Ehud Barak and approved by the Israeli government[1] [2] However, his appointment was later cancelled by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Barak following months of scandal surrounding his appointment due to allegations that he had seized public lands for his personal use near his home.[3]

Willy Pete is nothing new. DIME weapons and thermobaric grenades were probably being "tested." you have to question their logic: is all this constant global abuse of vulnerable populations really going to prepare anyone to fight real soldiers? the 2006 Lebanon war would seem to indicate otherwise.

"Just War Moral Philosophy and the 2008–09 Israeli Campaign in Gaza"

SUMMARY
The 2008–09 Israeli military campaign in Gaza, commonly known as Operation Cast Lead, is best understood in the context of Israel’s “iron wall” strategy. During the 1930s, the strategy emphasized the need for overwhelming military power to break Arab resistance to the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine; since the creation of Israel in 1948, it has continued to be at the core of Israeli policies in the overall Arab-Israeli conflict. From the outset, the strategy has included attacks on civilians and their crucial infrastructures. Such attacks violate the just war moral principles of discrimination and noncombatant immunity. In addition, Cast Lead violated the just war principles of just cause and last resort, which state that wars must have a just cause and even then must be undertaken only after nonviolent and political alternatives have failed. Israel did not have a just cause in 2008–09, because its primary purpose was to crush resistance to its continuing de facto occupation and repression of Gaza. Further, Israel refused to explore the genuine possibility that Hamas was amenable to a two-state political settlement. Thus, the iron wall strategy and Operation Cast Lead, in particular, have been political as well as moral failures, undermining rather than serving Israel’s genuine long-term security needs.

I'm tempted to cut and paste it here, but it's a 37 page PDF.

It's pretty damning.

I think this should be seen in the context of IDF posturing after getting defeated -- outright defeated -- in Lebanon.

This kind of rhetoric serves a domestic and international purpose, it's not just monsters slipping up and being "too honest."

That purpose involves no small amount of disguising the fact that Elbit can't compete with Hezbollah.

All of which exploits what amounts to intrinsically artificial faiths as a means of control, and essentially amounts to further expansion of control for "the few", however we might define "the few" ?

The sooner we wrest control from such concerns, the better. I guess its all about making 7 billion people understand their own personal connection to the Infinite consciousness, or infinite anhihilation, whatever their preference or belief might be. The simple fact is, one or the other is a certainty.

Anybody wishing to frighten the artitechts of control, ultimately needs to be logged in to such understanding.

I may not be parsing that sentence correctly, my friend, but I see the '06 defeat (along with Iraq & Chechnya) as pointing towards a different direction for long term conflict and the consolidation of geopolitical power. I think it speaks towards the hard limits of Empire -- a flesh and blood corollary to the nuts and bolts hard limits to economic "growth" that The Few have been grappling with over the past two decades.

Which, I guess, qualifies as something resembling optimism? Probably not. I don't expect power elites to learn any lessons, at least not this century. It's not like they've ever faced any actual consequences for being wrong.

Side note: The Slater PDF is just outstanding. Very clean writing. Also, tons of unintentional comedy from a guy who actually believes military theory & philosophy.

Indeed. They appear to leave such consequences to us, or so it would appear in the nuts and bolts world.

Of course, as quantum physics has clearly illustrated, the nuts and bolts world isn't quite so cut and dried as we all make it out to be.

Call me a fool if you like in my current state of quantum potential, but I just think we could do it better. Personally, I believe thats what its all about.

A good start might be understanding exactly how the methods of control work as we discuss artificially created religious faction "A" versus "B" ?

This latest incursion yesterday and last night has me feeling really emotionally drained for some reason. Perhaps it's because someone from my childhood that I care a lot about has gone from an extremely liberal hippie to quite fascist in her adulthood. She's told me in private that she doesn't believe in Palestine's "right to exist." I chalk this up to a "spiritual awakening." Even though she spent some years on a kibbutz, she's very unrealistic and susceptible to propaganda. It bums me out.
Israel’s Military Begins Social Media Offensive as Bombs Fall on Gaza
By ROBERT MACKEY
Last Updated, 8:44 p.m. Almost as soon as the Israeli military began bombing Gaza on Wednesday, with residents of the Palestinian enclave documenting the strikes in real time on Twitter, the Israel Defense Forces initiated a social media campaign to defend its actions and goad its enemies.

As my colleagues Fares Akram and Isabel Kershner report, the Israelis “coupled the intensity of the airstrikes with the threat of another ground invasion and warnings to all Hamas leaders in Gaza to stay out of sight or risk the same fate as the Hamas military commander, Ahmed al-Jabari, who was killed in a pinpoint airstrike as he was traveling by car down a Gaza street.”

Those warnings were broadcast in a series of updates to the official @IDFSpokesperson Twitter account, along with links to YouTube video of the strike on the Hamas commander and a Facebook-ready poster with the word “eliminated” stamped over over his image.

Israel’s military also distributed images of Israeli civilians sheltering from Hamas rockets and links to its own live blog on Operation Pillar of Defense, and even made an effort to tap into the “Keep Calm and Carry On” meme, asking supporters to retweet a poster defending the offensive that was clearly designed to resemble the viral emblem of wartime Britain.

As the Israeli journalist Noam Sheizaf reported, the military wing of Hamas was active on Twitter too, issuing threats, detailing its own strikes and even responding directly to the Israeli military’s warning from its @AlqassamBrigade account.

Image

Mr. Sheizaf called the Twitter dialogue, “A window into the childish, murderous thinking of the leaderships of both sides.”

As the two sides used social networks to trade barbs and attempt to shape public opinion, bloggers and journalists in Gaza documented the impact of the shells on the population.

Among those killed, the BBC foreign editor reported on Twitter, was the 11-month-old son of a BBC journalist in Gaza.

The blogger who writes as @RanaGaza described shelling from Israeli warships and posted audio of what she described as explosions and the sound of Israeli jets and drones overhead.

As the NPR journalist Andy Carvin noted, perhaps the most horrifying images of the day were in a video clip posted on YouTube that showed a man displaying the horribly burned, mangled body of a dead child at a sort of news conference. The graphic and deeply distressing video was posted online above a warning that read: “Watching this is not recommended for the faint-hearted. Zionist missiles of hate aim at the children of Gaza and pour their hatred upon them. Are you not ashamed of your humanity, which has become meaningless and illegitimate? Have you no shame, Arabs?”

The video was uploaded without any description of where it was recorded, but the location looks like the lobby of al-Shifa Hospital and the man holding the body appeared to be an official. (A Reuters photographer captured an image of a doctor who resembles a man at the official’s side in the video, also holding the small body of a dead child bearing similar burn marks. More video of the same awful scene, shot from a slightly different angle, was posted on YouTube by the Palestinian Al Aqsa TV channel.)

As the man held the body out for the television cameras to record, he said in clear, formal Arabic: “I submit to Europe and the secretary general of the United Nations and all the Arabs who have not contributed to the defense of Palestine, I submit this smiling child — a martyr — and I invite you to join the sorrow of her mother and father. This child has gone to God, who will protect her in death and who will protect your country and mine.”

Still bearing the small corpse, the man added: “The Palestinian people submit what none of us should have to submit and what no other people in the world would be able to submit. We see the true burning, the burning that happens in the year 2012. This is the burning, and not the burning of the Holocaust.”

I suspect the number of Palestinians dead in 2012 may have gone up after yesterday.
