More TV!
American Gods (Neil Gaiman) just started airing.
Just finished the last season of 'Line of Duty', and have to say it's one of my favorite shows.
It's a conspiracy show disguised as a police procedural that touches on some very Rigint topics, and each season reveals a little more of the bigger picture.

In 2001, CBS finally gave the CIA their own show under George W. Bush's Administration. The series was called The Agency.
It was part of our liberal shoot down policy under the drug war. The series rewrote the incident to blame FARC guerrillas for tricking CIA.
By the time the episode aired, the 9/11 attack had happened and it sucked all the oxygen out of the story. Beware of "dramatized" history!

I watched two episodes of The Handmaid's Tale last night - it's very good, I'm looking forward to the rest. It's visually great, very nice use of colours and filters. And the story's good - or rather the backstory, the atmosphere of religious conformity and all. Lots of American commentators obviously saying it's extra relevant in the time of Trump and so on, but it has a lot to say about Saudi-style Islam as well. It could use more in the way of exposition but I think episode 3 has a bit of that.

The Tunnel: Sabotage
Season 2 of The Tunnel (The Tunnel | Sabotage) checks a lot of the RI boxes.

Detective series set in rural Wales, each episode investigating a different murder. Maybe not as sophisticated/riveting as ‘True Detective’ or ‘The Fall’, but Hinterland predates both, I believe. Am finding the characters sympathetic/compelling; good acting, script, no sensationalism, nothing too graphic ............
The first episode exposes the horror/impact of institutional child abuse.

Halt and Catch Fire season four (final season) just started airing a couple of weeks ago. One of the few shows that just keeps getting better and better. Highly recommended if you have any interest in the rise of personal computers and the internet, or just a good drama.
Also finally got around to watching The Shield. Just started season two and loving it so far. Never knew corrupt cops could be so much fun.

Re: I am currently watching television programmes
I have been watching 24 for the first time in recent weeks and have started season 3 this weekend.
The topics are very 21st century for TV aired in 2002 to 2004.
The removal of a POTUS by Article 25 was news to me with Trump but it was broadcast on 24 in 2003, not just aired but used in error on 24.
On 24 the oil interests in the Caspian wanted war and the black POTUS Palmer did not want to get a Middle East war on over a false premise as to a terrorist attack.
There was a black POTUS on 24 long before POTUS Obama, even before Obama came to prominence as a Senator.
The torture used on 24 is pretty gruesome.

Re: I am currently watching television programmes
God help me, but I've actually seen all seasons of 24. It's strangely compelling in a train-wreck sort of way, but to their credit the evil Muslim terrorists usually turn out to be patsies for the deep state. Spoilers for later seasons: They've even got false-flag nuclear attacks and an attempted takeover of the government by a PMC.
And yeah, the incessant torture is pretty fucked up.
PS! Tonight everyone is teleporting to King's Landing for the big showdown. Yay!

Narcos
guruilla » Wed Sep 09, 2015 7:45 pm wrote:Interesting to read this in light of recent Netflix show Narcos - I was curious to see how much the facts have been distorted. The show def. makes the US look like heroes (so far, up to 7th ep), and it doesn't indicate any sort of CIA-backing for Escobar's operations, which I would sort have taken as a given, knowing nothing about the specifics of this history. Anyone else see the show?

I don't remember the details, but there are some CIA shenanigans in the show.

I haven't seen this, but I can highly recommend the original Swedish/Danish show, Bron/Broen (The Bridge). The 4th and final season is in production.MinM » Mon Jul 31, 2017 3:46 am wrote:

Also: season two of Okkupert (Occupied) starts airing on Viaplay / the pirate bay the 29th this month. Pretty good show about a "soft" Russian invasion of Norway.

Re: I am currently watching television programmes
A few good crime dramas I recently watched:
Ozark: Accountant gets in deep with a cartel and has to move his family to the Ozarks to launder money.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hAXVqrljbs
Trapped: Icelandic murder mystery set in a small town isolated by the weather.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUP5uNDV6DA
Startup: White banker, Haitian gangster and Cuban hacker try to launch a new cryptocurrency.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCf_MpXAXK8
And of course Stranger Things 2:

Oh, and Mr. Robot season 3 has started, and things are actually starting to make sense, plus it's moving into some honest to god science fiction territory.
