Hessdalen, Norway (UFOs)
This may be the most thoroughly documented UFO site in the world. This phenomenon has been known in the valley for at least a hundred years. It has been studied scientifically since the 80s. The conclusion is that the phenomenon is definitely real and unexplainable. From a "final technical report" from "Project Hessdalen" from 1984:

Quote:
One of the three times the light was followed with the eyes and was seen as a reflection on the radar screen at the same time and direction, there were reflections every second sweep. But the light was seen all the time. Could it be that the light does not reflect radar waves all the time? Only sometimes? The same thing happened a couple of times when we didn't see the light: Reflection every second sweep. Is it possible that it might "react" to radar waves? Was it because of the radar that it didn't reflect the second time? The technical data on the radar, and a copy of some of the recordings will be found in the appendix.
...

We used the laser, and pointed it towards a flashing light, in two different cases, totally 9 times. 8 of these times, there was a reaction.
In the first case, there was a regular flashing light, slowly moving towards north, on Sunday 12 February at 7.35 pm. The flashing had been regular all the time we had seen the light. The light moved slowly. From the first time we saw it in the south, until it disappeared in the north, it took about 15 minutes. When this light was in the northern part of Finnsåhøgda, we pointed the laser towards it for the first time. At once, it changed the flashing sequence: From a regular flashing light, it became a regular double-flashing light: Flash.Flash.......Flash.Flash.......Flash.Flash....... After about 10 seconds, we put the laser down, at once it became a regular single-flashing light again: Flash......Flash......Flash...... After about 10 seconds we repeated this again. It was repeated totally 4 times before it went out of sight. All the times, we got this double-flashing, when the laser was pointing at it.

The second case, the same type of light came from the north and moved towards south. It was the same day, Sunday 12 February at 8.41 pm. When the light was in the west, we pointed the laser towards it. The same thing happened now; it changed to a double-flashing light when the laser pointed towards it. This time we did it 5 times. Only the last of these times did we not get any double-flashing. But 4 of these 5 times, we got it.
...

Many times during the project period, the cameras failed. This happened mostly when we needed them most.

Some pretty weird things have been observed. Several observers have reported seeing an inverted spruce (one observer said "christmas tree") jumping up and down, "like a yo-yo"... weird enough for ya? A couple reported driving through a "pink cloud" which smelled of sulphur, while being "followed" by a light in the sky.

Cigar-shaped objects, triangles and squares are common. And just a couple of weeks ago, this happened:

Quote:
Date: 12.08.2005 Time: 01:45 A.M. Place: Riasten, 20 km north east of Ålen
Observer: Bjørn Holden
Bjørn Holden was at his mountain cottage at Riasten, which is located close to the road between Ålen and Tydal. He was asleep when his dog woke him up at 01:45 A.M. The dog was very restless, which is unusual. Bjørn went up and saw a strong ball of light just above the ground, close to the road, just behind a high power cable, towards west. The light was moving towards east, towards him. It had a shape of an egg, and the color was yellow and white, with a green light at the shape. The intensity was very strong, and it was big. Bjørn estimate the size as the size of his cowhouse, which is 15 x 7 meters. The ground beneath it was illuminated. It seemed as the lightrays were mainly directed downwards. The light moved across the house Bjørn was inside. Suddenly he saw an area on the roof, inside, which is illuminating (!). It looks as if the light is coming through the roof, as a ray, 1 m in diameter, pointing downwards. This light from the roof is strong enough to illuminate the room. Bjørn think this was the strangest thing about the whole happening. How can the light go throught the turfed roof? The lightphenomenon turned towards south, moved to mount Gjervolla. There is turn around and move towards north, on the eastern side of Bjørn and his mountain cottage. The light moved behind the hill Liavollen, which is closest to the mountain cottage, and in front of the hill Melevolden which is behind. The light moved slowly upwards and speeded up. It disappeared behind the mountains in north west. Total observation time was 10 minutes.

Here's a report of 10 years of research by an Italian team (pdf)

I don't know of any other place that is so frequently visited by this phenomenon, and consequently lends itself so favourably to scientific study of it. I find the laser experiment very interesting - some kind of communication?

Another weird one, among many:

Quote:
Dato: 27.01.2001 Time: Between 9:00 P.M. and 9:10 P.M. Place: Lake Øyungen, south in Hessdalen
Observers: Randi Aspås Moe and Terje Hasvoldseter.
Randi and Terje was at the cottage owned by Randi's parents, Rutt-Marry and Åge Moe. The cottage is located in the south-eastern part of lake Øyungen, close to the waterline. It was cold that night, so loud cracks could be heard. They were coming from the ice on the lake. On the other side of the lake, just south of mount Raudhovdet, could they see a snowmobile coming. Just above the light from the snow mobile could they see a huge light, bigger than the sun. Suddenly did the light split in four parts. All these parts were oblong up and down, the color were yellow in the middle, with a blue light on the outer part. These blue lights had a movement so it seemed as they were "boiling". The lights was first moving towards them, but changed direction towards north. It (they) was going in front og mount Raudhovde, and disappeared in the valley Raudådalen. Just before it went into that valley, merged these four light into one yellow light again. This yellow ball of light had gren, red and blue balls of light around it.

There are some very interesting video clips and photos at the hessdalen.org site. There's an automatic photo system which has caught some of the UFOs observed by inhabitants in the valley.

It's also interesing, considering all the UFO activity, that there are no accounts of abductions or close encounters of the third kind that I know of in the valley.

Anyway, I thought this might be of interest.

Qutb means "axis," "pole," "the center," which contains the periphery or is present in it. Re: Hessdalen, Norway (UFOs)
Thanks for the link. I had thought they were leaning towards the "some kind of energy from unknown natural forces possibly resulting from techtonic pressure" type explanation. That certainly would NOT explain the seeming reaction to laser flashes. Top of my vacation wishlist for sure!

Re: Hessdalen, Norway (UFOs)
my immediate reaction upon reading the radar bit is that the thing is spinning, and only half of it is reflective...
then the laser experiment just confirmed the idea.
probably an artifact of whatever propulsion the ships use.

just like a hover-top.. sucks in air/energy on the sides, blows it out the bottom. i'm gonna go read that site!

[edit]
holy fazoly they've got saucer pics! one is the second (blue) one that was posted above. definitely spinning, at roughly 1/9th the shutter speed. WOW.

Edited by: ZeroHaven at: 8/28/05 8:08 pm
