Re: Fireballs over Germany fuel UFO speculation
I haven't seen these, but sure wish I could (I think). Was watching the skies last night from here in North Carolina -- totally clear all week. Are there any photographs on-line of what people saw in Germany or elsewhere?

Well Not Exactly

Another pic - from Germany, off the NASA website.

science.nasa.gov/headline...aurids.htm

Eyewitness accounts describe blasts of light much stronger than your usual Tuarid meteor shower. NASA's article is less than explanatory.

What's happening? "People are probably seeing the Taurid meteor shower," says meteor expert David Asher of the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland.

Most years the shower is weak, producing no more than five rather dim meteors every hour. But occasionally, the Taurids put on quite a show. Fireballs streak across the sky, ruining night vision and interrupting fishing trips.

Asher thinks 2005 could be such a year.

Wow. A global phenomenon
On Halloween night, there were two separate incidents reported all across the Eastern seaboard. I heard about these in the DC area during the 10pm weather report. Here is a WTOP mention of the fireballs. Fox5-DC news reported witnesses seeing a fireball around 7:30pm, and another more widely reported sighting around 9:15pm.

WTF?

A couple of months ago...
...there were a lot of fireballs in the Pacific Northwest. Some people wondered if they had to do with seismic or volcanic phenomena.
