Fuck, that is insane, Ian. Do you mind if I ask you what years you were in Amherst?

About 1998 I was accepted to go to Hampshire College where I would go on to presumably study the cognitive sciences. Roughly around this time I was still enrolled at the University of Colorado at Denver. I had somehow snuck into a 400 level philosophy course in Phenomenology just because I was fascinated with the word. That's the way I chose all my classes, anything outside of business, math, economics or something I would reach for the very highest level class with all kinds of prerequisites and see if I could sneak in. It often worked. I was working for the transfer to another school you see. Anything I could possibly do to pad my undeclared major.

Well, as I said, I was accepted to Hampshire. But all the Sartre that phenomenology class made me read really started to get to me. I began to worry I would drive my car into groups of people, what makes me even hit the brakes at all, "Bad Faith" shit. It scared the living fuck out of me. So, long story short I had a nervous breakdown, lost my matriculation fee and such and wound up on meds for a bit, all culminating into a move to Seattle instead. I still can't read more than 30 pages of his book Nausea without freaking out and then having to distract myself from the directions my mind goes in.

I continued with some other lines of thought, kept up the reading and writing and landed upon Jaynes' The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Well, one night soon thereafter, I wound up getting a DUI and I had never been in trouble with the law at all in my life. They threw me in jail for a day. While I was in "general population" they put us all into some capricious, barbaric lockdown. Everybody had to go to their cells. I climbed up onto my bunk and tried to go to sleep and all of a sudden, my dad (who was not dead and nor is he now) lucidly came to me. It was absurdly lucid. He literally communicated with me through cell walls. He caressed my head, he hugged me, spoke to me. But it was not a dream as I was too nervous to sleep anyhow! I then popped up from my bunk and said "A-HA!". I had just experienced the bicameral mind!

And what's with Colorado connections to everything? Everybody I meet in Seattle is from Denver or Boulder. Naropa Institute eh?

Thank you for sharing that, Ian.

great post Ian! I admit I suspected you might get that epiphany... I take it you never found out for sure one way or the other or did you press parents or the program folks about it? on edit: sorry, not that I think you're nuts! Just that sort of situation can make a person wonder, I've had a somewhat similar situation myself.

Couple questions:
1. whatever became of Tom?

2. In Northhampton, by any chance would you remember the name of that little old fashioned diner nestled under the overpass bridge on the main drag going up into town? It was red paneled with the standard silver metal when I knew it in about 90.

and 82_28: you lucky bastid, I wanted to go to Hampshire so much but it was far and away the most expensive thing I ever looked at.

Oh I know, drew. I never went to Hampshire. I had half my first year's tuition and shit covered in grants and scholarships. But sometimes I really thank the Great Wise One for giving me my nervous breakdown. I have no debt at all. Who knows what would have happened to me had I gone to Hampshire. I can tell you this, the mental overload would have been too much and I would have had to bail out eventually. I'm glad to be on the west coast, in other words. . .

In 1992 i was squatting in a council flat in Dalston/Hackney, London, and for various reasons left to kibbutz in Israel, leaving 'my' real estate to the care of a french-african guy i was sharing with. After 3 months on a kibbutz i went with a mob of fellow backpacker-kibbutzers to Egypt for a month. One 4am we took a minibus tour to go see the sun rise on Mount Sinai, and i got a seat next to some blond yank called Randy. Turns out that before coming to Egypt he had lived in my room in London for 2 months and had taken up with a past lover of mine.

The last I heard a few years back, Tom was doing real good. He lives with his girlfriend and is still very into playing his guitar.

Holy shit.

I haven't watched The Simpsons in a while, but I used to have regular, mindblowing synchronicities connected to the show.

One example, which I might have written about here before:

I have a collection of Olmec heads—replicas of the colossal stone heads created by Mexico's Olmec civilization (the mother civilization of Mexico). On one of my first days at a new job, I took one of the heads with me to work to personalize my workspace a bit. One of the sales reps walked by, saw the statue, and said, "Olmeca!" Turned out she had studied Mesoamerican history in college. I was impressed—very few people recognize Olmec art.

That night, I told my roommate about the incident right before The Simpsons came on the tube. Towards the end of the episode, Mr. Burns gave the Simpson family an enormous crate. When they opened it, my roommate and I almost lost our shit.

"An Olmec head!" Lisa Simpson exclaims. Mr. Burns has given the Simpson family an Olmec head.

That was the craziest, but similarly powerful synchs were almost the norm nearly every time I watched the show. Others (like my roommate) began to notice the phenomenon as well. And on a synchronicity email list, one of the members also regularly posted about some jaw-dropping Simpsons-related synchs.

I wonder what it was about that show?

Yes, the Simpsons. It probably creates synchronicities for many people solely on the intelligence of its wide-ranging social commentary, among other things. What is it about that show?

And I'm posting this on the 3rd  Oh, the horror..

Wanna know something funny about 82_28? Not that anybody cares. But, I'm about to turn 36 and I have maybe watched 10 full episodes of the Simpsons in all my life. Somehow this always blows people away. It's not that I don't like it and don't enjoy the references and such. I just never got into it.

So consider yourselves blown away. :eeyaa

Appropos of nothing, this coincidence I once experienced comes to mind:

A friend's mother had just gotten a job as a salesperson for one of those bulk meat companies ...y'know, the kind where you buy a shit-ton of steak and they throw in a freezer...Well, one day I had gone into town to visit my friend and her mom spent the better part of the morning trying to sell me one of the 'packages' her company offered. I demurred. For one, we aren't huge steak eaters, but it just seemed like $1200 better spent elsewhere...besides I figured the hubby would be pissed if I spent that much money on meat even if they did throw in a chest freezer, especially as we had never discussed doing so.

I left that afternoon, proud of myself for my restraint in abstaining and diplomacy in turning her down, and drove home. When I got home, my husband greeted me at the door somewhat sheepishly. "I hope you won't be mad," he said, "but this morning one of those salesmen from some meat company came around and I figured we needed the freezer anyway..."

I suppose I should have looked to see if there was an astrological aspect in Taurus... :eeyaa

I have enjoyed many of the accounts on this thread and wanted to offer my own, as this was a fairly synchronous time in my life. I have tried to write these events down as accurately as possible but it was over 15 years ago so I may have forgotten or altered some things without meaning to. I did change all of the names, and obviously any dialogue is paraphrased from memory. I like music and tend to think/process in a musical fashion, so I revisited some of the music I was listening to back then to help me get my head back in that timeframe. It helped me to write this so I thought I would include the youtube links. The imagery of the videos certainly has no bearing on the story, but the music may be nice for those readers who are the same age as me. Thanks for reading.

Oh shit, I remember that. Many households once had that thing called the "meat freezer" in the garage or basement or something. I remember ours was always filled with frozen meat and stuff from the garden. It's so foreign to me now. It was always such a boring pit of nothing a kid would want to eat that came from a freezer. Kids wanted OTTER POPS!!! Anyways. . .

Today multiple synchs have all come to a head. Here's the run-down.

My very good friend and "ex-girlfriend" texted me that she is pregnant. Her due date is 12/12.

My birthday is 12/12.

Her grandfather's birthday is 12/12.

My GF's best friend has a birthday of 12/12, his name is Joey.

My best friend co-worker person had a first boyfriend named Joey -- his birthday? You guessed it 12/12.

My brother's name is Joey, his birthday is tomorrow -- May 19th. My "best friend co-worker person"? Her birthday is tomorrow, May 19th as well.

12/12 happens to be the most sacred of Mexican holidays. Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

When myself and this ex-girlfriend moved in together and moved out to Seattle we rescued and extremely sick cat and had to force feed her for over a month while vets told us to euthanize. For some reason I named this cat "Lupe". I had no idea of the date's significance.

Her nurse at the OBGYN is named Lupe.

Do the math. . .

:jumping:

A pic of Lupe forthcoming -- the most docile and human-like cat you could ever imagine. A living stuffed animal.

Does this shit happen to others too?

But wait there is more!

On edit: There isn't any more. Ugh I hate this clearwire modem. I've been attempting to get connectivity for like fucking the last hour. I don't know how that slipped in there -- double posted to boot. I did write it, but I took it out and then I sent the post and the modem died. Fuck clearwire -- now known as "Clear".

And just to keep everybody abreast, I spoke to her today, she's still on track for 12/12.

I love the original post's 12/12. Syncs are so ubiquitous in life, it ceases to even phase me. I think Jeff once wrote some story about a guy sitting on next to a guy on a plane who grew up on the same street as his surname and vice versa, or something like that. I liked how Nic Cage's Knowing kind of goes into numbers like that.

But life has some cutesey fun syncs...

A match made at Disney: How a married couple found their paths had crossed as toddlers 20 years earlier

By Rhianna King
Last updated at 8:38 AM on 11th June 2010

Having come from different countries and falling in love at work, Alex and Donna Voutsinas always believed fate played a hand in them getting together.

But now the pair have discovered their destiny could have perhaps been determined when they were small children.

Days before their wedding 20 years later, Mr Voutsinas was looking through his fiancée's childhood photos and was shocked to recognise his father in the background of a family snap at Disney World in Florida as his future wife, then aged five, posed in the foreground.

some not so cutesy syncs:

(the 10/11/06 crash Yankee pitcher crash into a manhattan high rise apartment event, or 9/11/01 upside down)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_Lidle ... e_building

The plane hit the 30th-floor apartment numbered 40ABG, owned by Dr. Parviz Benhuri and his wife Ilana,[17] the latter of whom was seated in the room when the plane crashed and sustained shrapnel injuries and burns. Her housekeeper was also present and helped her escape.[18] The plane also hit an apartment owned by a woman who was in a coma for a month following an incident at the 1997 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade when high winds pushed the Cat in the Hat balloon into a lamp post, and the debris in turn hit the victim. She was not in her apartment at the time of the crash, although was en route.[19] Among the other residents of the mixed-use high-rise is novelist Carol Higgins Clark, a resident on the 38th floor, who was interviewed by CBS Radio after she arrived at the building shortly after the crash. Then-New York Mets third-base coach Manny Acta also lives in the building, though he was away when the accident occurred.[20]

and then the downright eerie syncs...

Aleister Crowley opining at great length on the occult power of "11", "77", "93", and "175"(the 'power of venus') in his writings...nearly a hundred years later, these would be the four planes used
(9/11 is littered with "11" and "77" syncs) Also a lot of "al Qaeda" attacks following 9/11 always seemed to be on the "11th" or "7th" of a month

Princess Diana crashing into the 13th pillar minutes after midnight, making it 31st of august in 1997, with a pretty large bronze pentagram/eternal flame statue above the tunnel.

I definitely find it intriguing, about what Vallee had to say, but even folks such as Jake Kotze's notion of "synchromysticism" as a language of the universe
The Kubrick 2001 and 9/11 syncs alone are fascinating.

Also anyone remember the "Gulf oil rig explosion breaking news" scene near the beginning of Knowing with Nic Cage?
Image
That was a movie that dealt with 9/11, Oklahoma City, etc as numerology and later involved extra terrestrials and men in black strangely enough
