The main campuses, both built in the late 1930's, of NIH and the Naval Medical Center sit facing one another, almost within spitting distance. The Navy Medical Center is at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Jones Bridge Road (when I lived in that neighborhood, I'd wake up every morning and eat dinner in the evening to the bugle calls on the NNMC loudspeaker), which has long been a short corridor (part of my daily jogging route) populated by military/medical training and research institutes. Litton Bionetics had a lab in Kensington, a very short distance from Bethesda. Recently merged with NNMC is a new complex, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. But, back to NIH & military interests:
"In 2005, the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) formed a major new intiative to focus on clinical infectious diseases of military importance. This NIH-DoD program is in collaboration with the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF)." http://www.idcrp.org/hiv-natural-history-study.html
