I take for granted that most of the people on this forum are motivated by a sincere concern not only for their own loved ones, but for victims, and certainly for the impact that all of this has on a functioning democracy. When I'm confronted quite openly with something other, it does indeed give me pause.

Brekin, I agree this all serves as entertainment for some, and/or entertainment for profit. There is another category however, which I think is much more common, especially on RI, of unaware subjects who've been ordered to "cover" this topic online. This is a major source of poison pills, limited hangouts, honeypots, and forum disruption.

I mentioned something alluding to this above wrt Jerky.

I spent a lot of the time I was here but not here reading the fire pit and doing some extracurricular studying.

This place has had more than its share of legitimately creepiness peeps over the dozen or so years I have been watching. Why is an open question.

It was encountering this opposition which first convinced OP ED of its existence. If strength is a measure of resistance, then PW, for all of our perhaps often disagreement, is the rule.

The thing with motivations is that the ones that move us aren't the ones we are conscious of, not as long as we are fragmented.

The women that voted for Trump were acting from internalized misogyny (among other things) that even they don't understand. There is so much to learn about ourselves. Without looking inside we'll always be fragmented and often working against our own best interests.

First, I'm glad nobody got hurt in the CPP "attack". I hope that goes without saying, even thought it sometimes seems necessary here and in other online venues to state this explicitly.

I still think it has a high potential to be psy-op. There's too many weird things about the event itself, not to mention the context surrounding it (and the hard-on the media and government have right now for cracking down on "fake news").

But I want to point out something that maybe nobody else has yet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the corporate press is portraying Alefantis as 100% victim who never did nuffin' wrong. I find that really interesting. He could very well be innocent of all the crimes the internet has decided he's guilty of or complicit with. But he did post those Instagram photos. They are not nice photos. As such, Alefantis reminds me of every faggot I've met in my life who has celebrated their "transgressive" behavior until it all blew up in their face (as it inevitably does), after which they howled to the far reaches of the cosmos about how much of a Victim they were. I've had to deal with so many of those assholes over the last 30+ years (the time I've been out as a gay man) that I just view it as part of gay male culture.

There is no recognition of this fact in all the pieces that rush to Alefantis' defense. Sure, he doesn't deserve to be gunned down (this is true even if he is in fact guilty of CP). But I can't say acquiring a bad reputation for publicly posting extremely fucked-up photographs is exactly cosmic injustice. Maybe the national level of attention he's inspired is a bit much, but on the other hand he is a semi-public figure. In any case, I'm finding it hard to muster a great deal of sympathy for him, even if he is innocent of actual crimes.

I dunno, maybe it's me and my homophobia and intolerance...

Again, I have to reiterate because otherwise I run the risk of my words being twisted: I neither approve of nor celebrate vigilante justice. Nobody deserves to get shot over this.
